View Full Version : Tonight's Home Run Derby!!!! Who do you want to win?

Here are the participants for the fan favorite home run derby:
Lance Berkman, Astros
David Ortiz, Red Sox
Hank Blalock, Rangers
Rafael Palmeiro, Orioles
Barry Bonds, Giants
Sammy Sosa, Cubs
Miguel Tejada, Orioles
Jim Thome, Phillies
Personally, I would like Hank Blalock to win. He is the complete underdog in this competition and I would love to see an upset

I don't think anyone cares who wins as long as someone goes on a spree of like 6 straight 550-foot bombs.

Blalock definitely.
I wanted A-Rod or GIambi, sut since they're out, I'll go for Blalock or Berkman
Is it tonight? I thought it was Tuesday... who cares anyway? Is there anything more boring? The only good thing about it is that some lucky schmo will win a house.
But if I had to pick from that list... Jim Thome. He seems like a good guy and a good old-fashioned ballplayer. I always think he'd look better in black and white. Know what I mean?

I know what you mean. I like Thome too.
Are you being sarcastic about not knowing when it takes place? The All Star game is Tuesday.

I will be seeing the homerun derby on HighDef! SWEET! :)
My guts tell me Bonds will win it.. but sentimental reasons want Thome to win it due to his AS snub.. how can you not get the Major League leader in HR's to the as game.. huge huge snub!

I didn't know it was today... figured today was a travel day. I find the ASG & the HR Derby to be incredibly boring... I just can't get into it.

I agree with you Alex.
Is the Slam Dunk contest tonight as well?
They really should skip this crap & let the players have 3 days off.
You can't spell "outhomer" without Thome. He's my man this year. :D
I have a sneaking suspicion that a pull-crazy righty will win it this year because of the short porch in LF though.

out of all those players on that list, who do u feel hits the nicest homeruns (aesthetically)? I've always loved Ortiz's long majestic shots and his swing is built for hitting homeruns. I also like Barry Bond's too.

I want Jim Thome to win, even though I'll hear about it here for weeks, perhaps years. I wish Tino had another year on his contract so that the Yankees could have actively pursued Thome instead of Giambi, no offense to Jason. I've always like Thome. He is a real class act and a solid ballplayer. Plus, he plays all his games at first base.

I think Ortiz will win...i saw him hit some batting practice balls in Yankee Stadium that still haven't landed..
I'll be rooting for David Ortiz, Red Sox to lose...just can't help myself...

I want Thome to win. For nicest swing, it's Ortiz. Did anybody see the HR in Atlanta? Do you think anybody can hit a couple out there?

Aww, it's fun!
Although I do think it would be nice for the players to just have the time off.

Anyone but Barry Bonds.
I think it will be a showdown between Ortiz and Bonds. That would pique my interest

If it comes down to Ortiz and Bonds I would hope that based on the decency of the individuals involved, even the most vehement anti-Sox individuals would pull for Ortiz.

I would. Absolutely. But I hope it's Thome.

If Ortiz doesn't win, I hope its Thome as well. Seems like a great guy, and he has been killing the ball in the first half.

Honestly. . .
I, umm, kind of like watching Ortiz hit bombs. So, I might . . . I don't know . . . root for him anyway. Just a little bit, mind you. ;)

Rooting for Ortiz, which I would begrudgingly do, shows how little I think of Barry Bonds.
if it came down to bonds vs ortiz i'd watch law and order.
screw bonds.

Sweetest swing on that list? Rafael Palmiero. He's beautiful to watch. And probably the most underrated future HOF'er on the list, too. I guess I'm rooting for Raffy.
But.....I won't be watching the HR Derby. I'll be watching the reply of Saturday's Old Timer's Game on YES. Didn't get to see it on Sat. I'd much rather catch Gator, Goose, Reggie, Nettles, etc. than any HR exhibition. JMO.

They're showing Giambi's 2002 HR derby on ESPN2 now. Oh how I miss healthy Jason. :(
Anyway I'm rooting for either Thome or Ortiz...as much as I hate watching him bat against the Yankees, I love watching Ortiz hit.

I predicted that Tejada would win the Derby just because he's a righty and I like him. He certainly is making me look good so far.

I heard some boos as well which is sad. I guess it's due to the fact that the crowd's hometown favorite Berkman was the one he beat.

Still come on. Wasn't Nomar in the Home Run Derby in Boston? I distinctly remember the Boston fans routing for McGwire when he was lacing shots into Worcester. Boston has some of the most hostile fans (trust me, I've sat in the bleechers) and they still routed for the "non" home player. I could tell this was gonna be bad from the start today, the Houston people didn't seem into it.

True. This is such a laid back town and most fans here only really get loud for football. We're also home to some of the lowest common denominator type fans who lack class whatsoever. They threw out boos to our owner when he was introduced, even though he's gone the extra mile this year to put us in a position to win...they were booing Mig after the win (embarrassing!) and they also loudly were booing Bonds, although some light rousing what expected.
Great class, H-town fan. Way to tard the ceremonies up.

I was wondering why they were booing the owner? Is there something I am missing? Isn't this the guy that brought back hometown hero Clemens, and subsequently got Pettitte and Beltran, and previously Jeff Kent? Why would they boo?

I was wondering the same thing. If they're still carrying a grudge from past seasons when he wouldn't open up his wallet for mid-season free agents, then that's just sad.
Bandwagon 'Stro fan needs to EAD.
