It amazes me that people think Red Sox Nation enjoys losing more than winning. That we take pleasure from the suffering and, because we were a puritan society hundreds of years ago, we believe life is supposed to be punishment.

I was watching "I, Max" on FSNE today and Bill Wolf said that the Red Sox fans should enjoy the losing because if they win, all they become is another franchise like the Marlins or the Mariners(not an exact quote but very similar). I mean....seriously.....WTF kind of logic is that?!

Does anyone here really believe that your counterparts in the best rivalry in sports WANT to be known as losers instead of winners?

Honestly HOW HARD IS IT TO BE A YANKEE FAN???I mean they get the guys they want with their huge ass payroll and win...You know what THEY SHOULD BE THE BEST TEAM IN BASEBALL!! they highest paid team should be the best it's logic people!

But come on Yankee fans...Tell me the last time you actually were paniced...Besides the World Series games. I mean in the regular season when were you so scared about what was going to happen that you actualy cried...I have done it because I'm a Sox fan...But hey I like the underdogs and hates the favorites.

I root for Red Sox and root against the Yankees.
I rooted for the Patriots in the Super Bowl when they played the Rams but last year I rooted for the Panthers in the Super Bowl.
In the NBA Finals I rooted for the Pistons, not the Lakers. (mostly bc I like Richard Hamilton bc he played for UConn and I watched him win the NCAA championship).

I maintain that being a Yankee fan is very difficult. Everyone hates you, and the ONLY outcome that is acceptable is a World Series win. Most teams are happy with a playoff birth. Not the Yankeeso. For the Yankees, getting knocked out in the first round is a failure. Everyone expects you to win, and everyone roots against you. Nah, it ain't easy being a Yanks fan, but it sure is fun. :)

As for the topic, nah, I don't think you like losing.

Oh please. Don't try to compare "how hard" it is to be a fan of one team versus a fan of another. IMO, you pick a team and you stick with that team through thick or thin. I stuck with the Yankees when I was a little kid, suffered through their lousy seasons, and relished their comebacks. It's not my fault your chosen team doesn't win as often. And don't try to say that I or my compatriots have it so easy. It was absolutely awful seeing Jeter get pulled out of the stands last night. I was psyched he made the catch but seeing those injuries....

Talk to any fan of the Knicks, the Cubs, the Rangers (either hockey or baseball), or even the Expos. Every team goes into cycles. I'm lucky that my baseball team tends to cycle towards victory quite often. I recognize how hard it is to do and I appreciate that.

If you can't deal with the fact that your team can't win, then don't root for them. Don't complain about it to me. Thick and thin.

you are right. It must be harder to be a sox fan than a yankee fan. You happy now? I've said it.

After all your team stinks. They lose and lose and lose. They are a bunch of losers that will never beat the yankees. The yankees are winners the redsoxs are losers.

Oh please...there are some really classy Sox fans that post here. Don't come over and give them a bad name. Your jealousy is just oozing out right now.

You pick a team when you are little (usually based on geography, family, whatever) and you stick with that team. We happen to be Yankee fans. It doesn't make us any less of a fan because we haven't suffered as much as you have. We have a great owner and a great team and we are very proud of that.

I could care less if anyone hates me because I'm a Yankee fan. I have a hell of a lot of fun with this game, the rivalry, rooting for a team.

In short, get over it.

A number of media people try to spin this BS from time to time. (CHB being the biggest since it would hurt book sales when the Red Sox win it all)

It's garbage. Watching the Patriots win their 2nd Superbowl makes you want another and another. I can see why Yankee fans love winning so much.

What are you talking about? I'm a Jets fan and I just LOVE losing! ;)

It's true --- the notion that Red Sox fans like to lose and having an "identity" is totally absurd. Every team's fans wants to win every year. What is the point of being a fan otherwise? I'm sure Tampa Bay fans want to win just as badly as everyone else too.

No one enjoys losing. I also want to bring up another myth about the Sox and Sox fans. I absolutely HATE when I hear people say things like "Sox fans won't know what to do when they win a championship" or " When the Sox win the World Series, the fans won't care anymore". When we win a world series, we will party, have a parade, and get ready for next season. The real Red Sox fans will still care about the team, although I believe fandom on a national level may drop a bit, because a lot of people like rooting for underdogs (us and the Cubs). Basically, I hate the notion that we would react to a championship any different than anyone else would, just because it has been a (very long) while.

Dude I don't doubt anything you say, but if Boston were to win the WS, Boston would be in shambles for weeks... and the world might even end. Things like that (sox winning)ARENT supposed to happen.

The Patriots weren't supposed to win the super bowl either...

But on the subject, if someone wanted the Red Sox to lose...why wouldn't they just cheer for the other team? If the Red Sox ever win, they don't lose their identity, but gain a better one. Winner.

If they enjoy losing so much why are they chanting "YANKEES $#^&!".

Obviously the average RedSox fan would like to see their team win the world series. In that regard they are the same as any baseball fan of any team.

I think the "YANKEES #$%^!" routine indicates that the YANKEES are more important in Boston than an opposing team normaly would be but I don't think that means that they want their team to lose. I think Sox management indulges that phenomenon in a convenient, profitable, but counterproductive way but that doesn't mean that Sox fans want to lose. If Sox management beleived that the Sox fans enjoyed losing they would trade Ramirez to us for a bad minor leaguer and send us Schilling for our worst minor leaguer. Don't hold your breath.

This "Sox fans love losing" concept is just another journalists poor attempt at creativity. If the average baseball player performed like the average journalist baseball would have gone bankrupt decades ago.

Arguements about how "easy" it is to be a fan of any particular team seem to be on par with the "Sox fans love losing" concept. I am a YANKEES fan because I want to be. Nobody forced me to root for the YANKEES. I assume that unless you are cheering for the North Korean Soccer or the Cuban track team nobody forced you to cheer for your team.

Yes, but not when Boston is nowhere near YANKEE Stadium. In any event I think it's safe to say that fans from both teams want their team to win.

You heard it right, it was during the time at the beginning of the game where the fans chant each players name. (where did this tradition start and when?)

So next time I hear Red Sox fans chant Yankees Suck because of jealousy, I will gladly point to this chant, as I know Yankees fans are not jealous of Boston. Maybe people will now realize this chant is just for fun, and perhaps to get a rise out of the opposing fans.

Im with Penfold, my family are all Yankee fans. I was raised a Yankee fan. Im also 22, my first real memories of the Yankees were the almost good enough 2nd place era, then I had to suffer through the early 90s. That was terrible. But it sure is a hell of alot of fun now.

OF COURSE there were "Boston Sucks" chants during this series ....

... but I think I'm safe in saying that you do not hear "Boston Sucks" chant at the stadium when the actual Red Sox team isn't in the stadium playing the Yankees.

And there-in lies the difference. :D

btw, I'm glad to see that the offending poster in this thread was released.
Because it's a pretty chump move to throw out the "well of COURSE you won with your payroll" charge after what was (discounting the first game) an incredible weekend of baseball between two really terrific teams.

Oh, and regarding the original question of this post......

Nobody with more than two brain cells in their head would actually believe that a Sox fan PREFERS losing to winning, for pete's sake.

That's just stupid, and we all recognize that.

Any person who's written that, or says it, is saying it to get the expected response ..... which is anger, frustration, etc.

I have actually heard it at Yankee Stadium when the Red Sox weren't playing. It was caused by someone wearing a Red Sox hat (me).

That's usually the case in Fenway in the bleachers. Someone with a Yankees hat walks by and off the goes the chant.

I've heard 1918 at a Jets/Pats game last year too.

Can we just get off the point of people thinking one setof fans is better than the other?

I don't know how much you can take this into account, since it came from the same show where the guy said the Sox fans enjoy losing, but I too was watching IMAX the other day (don't ask why) and he made some interesting comments. He mentioned that in the bleachers at Yankee Stadium they would start chants that would go in rotation, "Mets suck, Boston sucks, the other section of the bleachers sucks, ETC." So according to a "bleacher bum" in Kellerman, this does happen in non-Sox-Yanks games.

I believe you're wrong and wish that was true. Patriots fans have had no problems bonding after winning two Superbowl in three years.

Red Sox fans bond because they love the game and I would argue it's the best baseball town in America.

No, losing doesn't give us a "common bond," supporting our team to begin with does. We share losing together because we have to, and when we win it all finally we'll share that together too. Red Sox futility is not some kind of mythic poetry that attracts a bunch of sadists and fatalists, despite what some morons in the media might try to tell you. I can't wait until we win it all, and I'll cheer just as loudly (and suffer just as many near-aneurysms) the next season, and the season after that, and the season after that...

has nothing to do with what team one follows and what board it is. read the definition.
