PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Phillies have called a news conference for 6 p.m. (ET) today, when it's expected they will announce the acquisition of starting pitcher Eric Milton from the Twins. The Phillies will apparently send reliever Carlos Silva and infielder Nick Punto to Minnesota.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported Wednesday that Milton, who has one year at $9 million remaining on his contract, was one of two players the Twins have been trying to trade. The other is outfielder Jacque Jones.

The 28-year-old Milton, a left-hander, pitched in just three regular-season games this year after having surgery March 5 to repair a deteriorated bone in his left knee. He started 29 games in 2002 and went 13-9 with a 4.48 ERA.

Milton, a 2001 All-Star who has been with the Twins since starting his career in 1998, has compiled a 57-51 record with a 4.76 ERA over 166 games.

Silva, a right-handed middle reliever, had a 3-1 record with a 4.43 ERA with one save this past season. The 24-year-old has pitched in 130 games in his two seasons in Philadelphia.

Punto, a utility infielder, saw time at second base, shortstop and third in 2003 and had a .217 batting average with a homer and four RBI in 64 games. The 26-year-old had played four games in 2001 and nine in 2002 in his only other years in the majors.

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Phillies acquired left-hander Eric Milton from the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday for reliever Carlos Silva and utility infielder Nick Punto.

The Twins also get a minor leaguer to be named after the Rule 5 draft, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports.

Milton, who won 41 games from 2000-02, started just three games last season after having surgery on his left knee during spring training.

He returned late in the season and went 1-0 in three starts with a 2.65 ERA. The Twins acquired him from the New York Yankees in 1998 along with Brian Buchanan, Cristian Guzman and Daniel Mota in exchange for Chuck Knoblach.

A former first-round pick of the New York Yankees in 1996, Milton was an All-Star in 2001 when he went 15-7 with a 4.32 ERA. He also pitched a no-hitter in 1999.

The Phillies have been seeking another starter for the top of their rotation since Kevin Millwood filed for free agency last month. Philadelphia was interested in Curt Schilling, but the right-hander went to Boston in a trade with Arizona last week.

Milton, 28, joins All-Star left-hander Randy Wolf, former All-Star right-hander Vicente Padilla and promising right-hander Brett Myers in the Phillies' rotation. Milton will make $9 million next year and will be eligible for free agency after the season ends.

Milton was the second pitcher to leave the AL Central champion Twins on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, the Chicago Cubs announced they had signed free agent reliever LaTroy Hawkins away from Minnesota.

If this is all it took to get Milton, the Yankees could have traded Almonte, Choate, and Enrique Wilson. That would probably be a better package anyway.

Carlos Silva is a 24-year old reliever with a power arm. Way better than Almonte, Choate, or a recently resigned and thus untradeable Enrique Wilson...

Anyway, the only reason the Yankees would've wanted Milton would've been out of desperation. He's never had an ERA under 4.32...

Exactly.

Silva can throw pure and simple.

The Twins, for whatever reason, are infactuated with Guzman, Rivas, and Hocking. No room for Almonte.
