It was Grady Little's "call", but let's face it, PEDRO made it.

I call it an "Error of False Pride".

And it cost the Boston Red Sox a berth in the World Series and possible (probable) championship ring.

Pedro is such an arrogant little weasel, that he could not resist rubbing it in the faces of the his hated rivals, the Yanks, by getting the final outs of the 8th (and possibly 9th) inning.

This was going to be his VINDICATION, his ultimate curtin call, but ALAS, his ego and mental disorders got the best of him and now Grady Little might be looking for employment ELSEWHERE.

While the "Beat goes on" for the cursed Boston Red Sox franchise.

Yes, it was Grady's RESPONSIBILITY to know a tiring pitcher when he sees one. I don't care if it is Pedro, or Sandy Koufax on the mound, it was time to get him out of there. His failure to do so, (was he intimidated by Pedro during that conference on the mound?), has added another "Day of Infamy" to a ballclub which has a whole calender of such days.

Let that be a lesson to ALL major league managers. YOU are being paid to make those decisions - not some sociopathic pitcher.

Jersey Yankee - Thanks for responding to my "essay" _ I'm surprised there weren't more comments. I take THAT as COMPLETE agreement!

I'm with you. I think Pedro and Grady wanted nothing more than for Pedro to pitch a complete-game victory so he could ride high on his teammates' shoulders on the field at the Bronx when it was all said and done. He wanted to be the one to put the series away.

Good teamwork, schmuck.

Their "pride" got in the way of playing smart baseball, though this is Boston we're talking about... their desire for some story book ending of finally taking the Yankees in the staduim and going on to the series cost them the championship... wtg boys.... 1918.

And in the end, it was their "pride" that caused Grady Little to make an error in judgement that lead to their demise.

I don't believe in "curses" (per se) but I do believe in "self-fulfilling prophesies"

"The FEAR that you have will become you"

They secretly "feared" the mythical curse and acted in such a way that perpetuated it. Life is stranger than myth sometimes.

I don't think the players necessarily believe in "the curse".

The fans, however, are immersed in it, up to their eyeballs.
