View Full Version : I just LOVE Paul LoDuca
Not only is he a hard-nosed solid player, he's old school too. Milton Bradley starts taking off his batting gloves as soon as he hits a HR - not 10 feet from home plate.
LoDuca tells 1st baseman when he got on base - "Does he always take his gloves off when he hits one? Well, tell him he's gonna get plunked one day".
Next time Bradley whiffs, LoDuca yells for him to take off his gloves this time.
Anyway, he tried to advance to 3B on a fly out on Bradley's arm and got nailed. Bradley starts jawing at LoDuca.
Anyway, I just love the kind of stuff LoDuca's made of. I really respect him. He plays sooo hard, gives up his body, and is very old school.

Hey Alex, do you remember the confrontation between Pudge Fisk and Deion Sanders? I was reminded of that by the ESPN piece.
No, don't remember it. But I dunno what it is... I've always like LoDuca. From the first game I saw him play. I just love his grittiness, his old school ways, and his willingness to give up his body to win.
He's such a throwback. I dunno why, but I love that stuff.

Fisk was behind the plate when Deion popped the ball straight up in front of the plate. Neon just stood there watching the ball. When it was caught, Fisk turned to Neon and started ragging on him, stuff like, "this is the major leagues, you run the ball out no matter what. You're an embarrassment, etc., etc. Fisk kept it up, following Neon all the way into the Yankee dugout, giving it to him. Sanders was out of baseball a short time later.

It's the same thing as jogging super-slow around the bases, flipping your bat, staring as the ball goes out --- it shows up the opponent, and disrespects the game. You don't stare at your ball going out and start taking off your gloves as if you have all the time in the world - since you hit a HR, sitting there and soaking it up admiring yourself. Milking the moment like that shows up the other team.
Put your head down and run around the bases. That's it. Don't saunter down the 1B line staring and taking off your gloves - you can do that in the dugout.

Spiker, that Fisk-Sanders deal got worse when Deion comes to bat and starts drawing a dollar sign in the dirt. Good ole Fisk stands out of his crouch and gives Deion a good bump. Smart ass Sanders was about to get his butt kicked by the old man and I doubt anyone on the Yankees would've defended "Neon".
I was put off by "Primetime's" act as well (I saw him rub it in the NY Giants face enough times), but don't assume that Fisk would have kicked his butt. Deon was so much younger and quicker, that if Fisk was unable to tie him up, it would have been Fisk who would havve gone down.

Huh, did you ever see Neon tackle anyone? The man has zero in the way of guts. On the other way, there is no way Carlton is able to catch Sanders who would still be running if Fisk decided to punch his eyelids.

If I had Deon's speed and quickness, and I had to fight Fisk, I'm going to stick and move. He has the <i>ability</i> to get in three or four punches before Fisk can react.
As I said, I am not a Neon Deon fan, but it takes <u>some</u> guts to play in the NFL, don't you think?
OTOH, I will always remember Dave Brown, that bust of a Giant QB, bowling over Deon on a run around end, with great fondness.

What was that quote that Bradley used regarding this incident? It was something like "Don't judge me and I won't judge you, don't mess with me and I won't mess with you."

Yeah, he's still a punk for doing it. He did it on purpose and he did it to upstage the other team. Why more guys don't get plunked baffles me. Has baseball lost it's honor?

Neon's rep in the NFL was as a gutless player who hated to mix it up physically. I don't watch enough pro football to have my own opinion.
rich you are FREAKIN KIDDING ME if you think deion sanders could take ANYBODY down. you ever notice how deion sanders had ZERO stoppin' power in the NFL? shoot - he'd make a tackle and smaller receivers would drag him forward a few yards.
if it wasn't for his ability to return punts, he would have barely lasted - ESPECIALLY with the bigger and stronger receivers....

Deon was a great cover corner for a long time, but he couldn't tackle bait.

Huh? My point is simply that Deon in his early 20s had the ability to punch out a 40ish Carlton Fisk. Football is irrlevant to that point.
