The Washington Redskins have hired Marty Schottenheimer as their head coach.

The team planned to announce the hiring this afternoon and officially introduce Schottenheimer at a news conference Thursday, sources said.

Schottenheimer, 57, coached the Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs for 15 seasons before resigning as the Chiefs coach in January 1999. He is the 11th-winningest coach in NFL history with a 145-85-1 record and led those two clubs to 11 playoff appearances. He had been working as a studio analyst for ESPN.

Schottenheimer reportedly agreed to a four-year $10 million deal, according to sources.

I never realized his numbers were that good....Sounds like a good choice.

I'm shocked that Schottenheimer would take that job. If he wants to coach again he would be very high on any teams list of candidates. Why he would want to work for a micro-managing control freak and coach a group of over priced veterans on a team that is clearly going to have severe salary cap problems is beyond me.

He's just probably overjoyed that he won't have to face Shanahan twice each year. :)

I'm very pleased with the choice of Schottenheimer. And I think the man is:
(a) extraordinarily brave,
(b) extraordinarily patient,
(c) extraordinarily stupid, or
(d) a combination of the above to want to work for DannyBoy Snyder. I wish him the best of luck -- he'll need it.

Hail to the Redskins!

You're getting a pretty darn good coach, Shel. I really figured Dannyboy would have no choice but to hire an assistant or a lesser college coach. Congrats to you.
I apologize in advance for the two losses Marty will suffer at the hands of the Giants next year ;)

It's a move in the right direction. He's the right type of coach to get this cast of under-achievers to produce, but until the 'Skins get some help at wide-receiver, the offensive-line, and special teams, it won't matter if the head coach is Bill Parcells, Joe Gibbs, Marty Schottenheimer, or the Pope, they're not winning a ring.

MARTY is an excellent coach, in fact he played for THE SKIN'S. THIS guy could of had 3-4 superbowl's but for some reason his team's alway's lost heartbreakers.

Gosh, patrick, if those are the only two losses that the Redskins suffer next season, I'll be pretty pleased! ;)
