The 2003 conference season has begun. I'm looking forward to an exciting year from my team the Syracuse Orangemen. They have one of the top freshman in the country, Carmelo "Melo" Anthony. Best player in an orange uniform since Moten. He is the Big East leader in scoring and second in rebounding. SU is very young this year, but Boeheim usually does better coaching youngsters.

The opening game of ESPN's "Big Monday" featured ND vs. Pitt. The Panthers dominated the 2nd half enroute to a blow out. Pitt and UConn look like the teams to beat in the Big East.

Any other college hoopsters out there? Who do you like?

hey....we can still win with the starting-5 as underclassmen ;)

Notre Dame Fighting Irish... And despite the blowout against Pitt they're still 12-2 and ranked in the top ten. Took me by surprise just like the football team did :)

I'm a UConn fan. The team is very talented, but very young. If Butler had stayed I would expect nothing short of the Final Four, but as is I'd be somewhat surprised if they made it that far. They seem to me a season away, as long as both Ekefor and Gordon return. With another years experience and everyone back, this team has as good a chance as anyone to win the whole thing in '04.

But you never know. Calhoun has a way of making his teams improve greatly from Novermber to March. It's certainly possible that they could get to New Orleans.

I'm with you, Patrick. UCONN!!! :D (Too bad they lost tonight to OK though :( )

I'm rooting for my Michigan Wolverines, even if we are banned from March Madness this season, since technically I'm a part of the Maize Ragers. I'm just happy they went from 0-6 to 7-6. But I guess if I survived that 11-18 season last year, I can survive this. :)

I will always root for the Seton Hall Pirates even though it's difficult for them to recruit in the Metro area. I hope they can shock some fans and beat the Orangemen tonight! I wonder if they'll ever return to the glory of 1989!!:D :D

I'm totally undecided, but my coworker went to Duke, and her Blue Devils just won their 10th straight, beating the Hoyas tonight. Close game, but I was hoping the Hoyas would pull it off.

It's like a friendly rivalry between my coworker and myself about Duke.

Well, that didn't happen. Thanks to a horrible call at the end of that game. With Syracuse clinging to a 68-66 lead over the Hall, Pirate forward Andre Sweet was belted on the head by Orangeman forward Hakim Warrick as he attempted a game tying shot from underneath the basket with seconds remaining. No foul was called and SU won.

I couldn't believe that noncall by the refs at the end of the game! I bet if the Pirate coach had been Bobby Knight or Mike K from Duke or even Jim Boeheim that that call would have definately been made. What a frustrating way to lose a game...and at home to boot!!&po'd& &po'd& &po'd& &po'd& I wonder what Knight's reaction would have been in a similar situation. Do you think he would have attacked the ref or thrown a chair!

Knight probably would have run onto the court and "decked" Hakim Warrick...

Siena, where I graduated from in 1980. In 1977 they lost to Syracuse 144-92. Looks like they may be on the schedule again next season...hopefully it'll be a little closer. :)

I'd love to see the 'Cuse play Siena. I went to school in Albany and watched many a Saints game in the now called - Pepsi Arena. When they made the NIT final four in '94 (I believe) I went down to watch them play Villanova (w/ Kittles) at MSG. They lost, but everyone in Albany was watching that game.

Syracuse Orangemen!!! Class of 2000. Great game last night. Melo didn't have his normal 25 a game, but I'm telling, Hakim Warrick is blowing up right now. He had his coming out party last night, with yet another double-double. They have a ton of potential, McNamarra is gonna be something else, plus they have a solid crop of young freshman coming in next year.

Cuse is in da House, oh my god, oh my god!!!!!!!

Yes, we are not eligible for the tourney or NIT.
But we're still the Michigan Wolverines and we're taking the Big Ten by storm! :D

10 game winning streak, 3-0 in Big Ten, including our latest victim, the Ohio State Buckeyes :D - worst home loss for them in the 5 years at their new home.

Man, I can't even lose peacefully. Every time they play, I promise they'll lose, but she says her boyz will never lose. OK, I figure in the next 2 games or so (hopefully not much longer, since I can't hold out forever), they'll lose. I mean a single loss wouldn't hurt so much, now would it?

I don't care what the heck they're called, they lost to Maryland, 87-72!!! YES!!!

No. 17 Maryland ends No. 1 Duke's unbeaten run

Jan. 18, 2003
SportsLine.com wire reports

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Cole Field House and the Comcast Center are across campus from each other. Maryland found a bridge between its old and new buildings: beating No. 1 Duke.

The 17th-ranked Terrapins beat the last undefeated team in the country, downing the top-ranked Blue Devils 87-72 Saturday.

It was the second consecutive year Maryland prevailed at home when Duke was No. 1, and it came in the new arena that sounded a lot like the old one when the final buzzer sounded and the students rushed the floor.

"This crowd was as good as any crowd we've had since we've been here at Maryland," said Gary Williams, who has been coaching at his alma mater since 1989.

Cole, which opened in 1955 and had a capacity of 14,500, was the place where Maryland beat six No. 1 teams. The 17,950-seat Comcast Center, which opened in November, got its first taste of the Terrapins beating a top-ranked team.

Last year's 87-73 victory snapped Maryland's four-game home losing streak to Duke.

Drew Nicholas had 24 points for the Terrapins (10-4, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) and Ryan Randle had 15 points and a career-high 17 rebounds as Maryland finished with a 43-32 advantage on the boards.

"I took it personally. Today we came out and said don't worry about points, just get every rebound," Randle said. "Beating a Top 20 team is what we wanted and needed. Beating Duke is a big confidence builder."

The defending national champions also stood out at the free throw line, finishing 29-for-31. Duke (12-1, 3-1) was 9-for-20, including 5-for-13 in the second half.

"Everybody stepped up," Williams said of the free throws. "We all know Duke can score in a hurry but once we got the lead we made our free throws."

Maryland was 0-4 against ranked teams this season, a far cry from last season's 9-2 mark against teams in the Top 25, including the win over No. 1 Duke.

The Blue Devils had won 14 of the last 17 games played at Maryland, but those were all in Cole Field House.

"Maryland played like a veteran team and we played like a young team," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "They just played better than we did. They deserved to win. They played harder and better."

Maryland scored the first six points of the second half to tie the game at 43 and then turned up the defense.

Dahntay Jones, who had a career-high 26 points for Duke, hit a 3-pointer with 14:21 to play that tied it for the last time at 53.

The Terrapins went on a 10-0 run with all the points coming from newcomers John Gilchrist and Jamar Smith. The Blue Devils went 5:55 without a field goal, missing six shots and committing three turnovers in that span as Maryland went up 75-60.

Duke, which shot 33 percent (11-for-33) in the second half after shooting 51 percent in the opening half, never got back in it.

"The second-half defense was very good," Williams said. "We knew we could go inside but thinking that and doing it are two different things but we got some good second shots."

Tahj Holden added 10 points for the Terrapins, who took care of the ball in the second half, committing three turnovers for a total of 16.

Freshman J.J. Redick, Duke's leading scorer, had 13 points, two in the second half. The Blue Devils entered the game shooting 38.1 percent from 3-point range but was 7-for-22, 2-for-13 in the second half.

"They made a run to open the second half and we didn't respond," Redick said. "We knew if we made a little run we could blow them out of the water. It was them who made the run."

The win was Maryland's biggest in the series since a 77-60 victory at home on Feb. 6, 1982.

Krzyzewski took nothing away from Maryland but said his team may not have deserved the ranking it took into the game, especially since it has five freshman in the 10-man rotation.

"I know I have a work in progress," he said. "Because we won all of our games up to now somebody voted us No. 1. I have coached No. 1 teams and I know that's not where we're at."

Anyway, they've also got baseball, and then she'd mentioned that two of her guys were also on the [GASP] Anaheim Angels!!! That's all I needed.

Did you see the way they lost? Unbelievable. Miami stole the inbounds pass with 2 seconds left and Rice stepped back and popped a 3-pointer with no time on the clock to beat the Huskies by 1 point.
I haven't seen that since Bird stole the inbounds and passed it to DJ to beat the Pistons.

I remember back in his amateur days, Tiger Woods made headline and cover news when he'd accepted a $400 sports jacket from an agent as a "gift", as that threatened his amateur career. Sounds similar, but Woods decided he didn't want to look over his shoulder 24/7.

Anyway, much to my chagrin, but fortunately, my co-worker hasn't let on, Duke is _STILL_ undefeated: the women, anyway.

In this case it's not a "high end shoplifter"...but a wanna be/sometime frontin' Alumni that gives so called "loans" to college players/families who expects to be paid back when that particular college athlete goes "pro". Michigan 12-2!! Wow. I bet the NCAA committee is loving that.

Speaking of the committee it was great to watch Edelin last night for my SU Orangemen. He had 6 assists and showed a glimpse of the talent this kid has. Him and GMAC are going to make a heck of a backcourt tandem. 'Cuse beat the Hall by 18 in the Dome.

Duke lost its second straight. Too bad, soooo sad. :D

Kansas and UNC lost as well. Tough night for the ranked teams. Kansas has 4 losses and is still ranked #6. Unbelievable. Roy Williams plays one heck of a schedule though.
