SS: Take a closer look at the numbers. Maybe you'll find a SS that's even "a bit bettah" then Nomar, and I'm not talking about Vizquel ;)

It just amazes me how weak the AL OF is compared to the NL even taking into account that Manny has been hurt.

As for the NL, there are 3 studs but you still feel strange snubbing the likes of Lance Berkman, Albert Pujols, Andruw Jones, Luis Gonzalez and Larry Walker.

LOL, SF -- not going to smack you around because I like you :D -- but I have to ask -- I agree DJ's numbers really don't look great but if you're going by numbers, why choose Nomar instead of A-Rod, Texas Ranger who is having a better year than both of them!! :D

hola franny god bless ya bro, but i just cannot play along w/ this silly bud inspired sham of and "allstar" game... it completely lacks any credibility when you got "fans" voting, and is really a rouse to sucker more fan$ into $upportin' bud's bogus monopoloy...

that said if the word allstar meant anything, i think the following are perhaps most deserving thus far this year:

American League

1st Base - Giambi (.309ba 19hr 49r 59rbi)
2nd Base - Soriano (.323ba 17hr 55r 44rbi)
Shortstop - Arod (.294ba 21hr 52r 60rbi) hon mention: (jete, tejada, nomar and vizquel are all even imho)
3rd Base - Hillenbrand (.315ba 13hrs 43r 49rbi) hon mention: Glaus (14hrs 54r 53 rbi) chavez (18hr 41r 49rbi) ventura (19hr 36r 52rbi)
Catcher - Posada (.262ba 10hr 42r 43rbi)
Outfielders - Torii Hunter, (.298ba 17hr 48r 53rbi)
Outfielders - Suzuki, (.365ba 1hr 57r 27rbi)
Outfielders - Garrett Anderson (.305ba 14hr 49r 54rbi)

National League

1st Base - Helton (.351ba 16hr 54r 60rbi)
2nd Base - Vidro (.334ba 7hr 51r 53rbi) (36 more rbi's than castillo)
Shortstop - hernandez (.282ba 13hr 34r 37rbi)
3rd Base - pujols (.288ba 16hr 55r 50rbi) hon ment: lowell (.332ba 11hr 41r 51rbi)
Catcher - Piazza (.283ba 14hr 30r 43rbi)
Outfielders - Sosa, (.312ba 26hr 59r 49rbi)
Outfielders - Bonds (.344ba 22hr 56r 43rbi)
Outfielders - Green (.289ba 22hr 56r 58rbi)

I had to do a double-take when i saw how well Anderson was doing. I'm AMAZED!

I'm not convinced he deserves the nod over Bernie, but the RBIs give good cause for it. He's just been more clutch..

Boz,

I gave Anderson the nod because it seems like he's gotten his fair share of clutch hits whenever I've watched the Angels on the dish. Bernie got off to that terrible start so despite his impressive play I couldn't in fairness give him my vote.

He's got more RBIs, and not just because he has more ABs with Runners On. He's got more RBIs/AB with Runners On, than Bernie. He's simply driving them in more. I give him credit for that..

but to counter that, Bernie is getting on base at almost .100 points higher (though his OPS edge is signifigantly less than .100 points), and his AVG his higher. And he's scoring more runs.

Bernie got off to a terrible start.. because of his injury. No doubt that they both deserve to go, but for my price of admission, i'd put bernie out there -- and that's a non-biased opinion.

Tough call, Boz. I could've gone either way on that one. Personally, I voted Nomar over A-Rod because Rodriguez's slump sticks out in my mind and Garciaparra's been one of the main reasons the Sox had been in first most of the season thusfar. I'll concede, though, that I may have made a mistake. If I were to vote again, which I probably won't, I might choose A-Rod instead.

I guess when all is said and done, the pick for the American League SS is a tossup, with A-Rod having a slight advantage in raw numbers. In point of fact, you could make an argument for A-Rod, Jeet, Nomah, or the rejuvenated Omar Vizquel.

A-Rod has the power.

Jeet has the speed.

Nomah has the BAVG

Omah has pretty good offensive numbers and the best 'D'

I'd be content with any of them, but for some reason I want to see Garciaparra start. Please send me whatever medication is necessary for me to get over this. :D

I mentioned him in another thread. His numbers are vg and he deserves to be in contention as well. I think he will be the odd man out, but Torre has a big decision on his hands. I can't see how he brings Jeter over Nomar or Omar who both have better numbers this year. Arod will be voted in and start which I think he deserves. It will be interesting to se what Torre does. Part of me can't see him leaving Jeter home whoch leads me to belive there will be a bunch of shortstops on the team this year. :o ;)

He's also got the OBP, and the SLG (by a mile).

B-Avg don't mean ................, IMO. Ignore the stat.

Nomar's got a lot of doubles, but A-Rod's got 21 friggin home runs. How can a guy lead a league in Home Runs, and not be on the all-star team..

AS A FRIGGIN SHORT STOP! :) :-P

Ya'll are welcome to your opinions, obviously.. but there ain't enough medication in the world to treat THAT! :D

i'd take him, and so should mr torre imho... jete's no cal, he don't need to be labelled an allstar annully to massage his ego, (maybe his groupies need it, but he don't), he is one, but so far this seas, tejada's been better, again imho...

hey maybe this is another thread, but i think mr torre should select mike sweeney also... seems the reserve process is the only way to add credibility to the name allstar and i certainly would not want to see mr torre further erode the integrity of the term just to load the team w/ yanks...

beltran's havina pretty productive year mr no brainer ;) and i seem to recall some real mystery selections by mr torre (no offense sir ;) ) last year, can't really remember cuz i don't watch the allstar game, but may have been greg vaughn or some other srcub when they're were more deserving players that were snubbed... mr no branier ;)

Who do you take from the Tigers, if you're Joe Torre ----

Robert Fick or Weaver?
I think I'd take Weaver.

I think Sweeney will get the nod Ansky as well he should. :)

SS is where it gets really interesting. If he takes Jeter than I agree Tejada needs to be in the mix as well as Arod, Nomar and Omar. That woud make 5 of them. Torre could take Arod who will be voted in and than take one additional SS who was the best stats and leave the other 3 home. This is the part of the announcement I am most anxious to hear.

Mike Sweeney is batting .352, with a .958 OPS.

It would be a crime to take Beltran as a backup when he's competing with Berns, Damon, and Hunter in CF. Sweeney's only real compitition, IMO, for the 1B slot is Jim Thome. Ya give Sweeney the nod because no one else on that club comes close to competing for a backup slot.

Maybe Torre thinks otherwise.. but that's a no-brainer in my book.

Carlos Beltran's OPS -- .828
Randy Winn's OPS -- .825

Heck, SOMEONE from Tampa's got to go :)

1B was a longjam last year, and that's why Greg Vaughn, a thoroughly mediocre player, was chosen over McGriff, the only player on the Devil Rays who was remotely close to deserving.

Jorge will probably win catcher, which is good because I-Rod is clearly undeserving (not many games, not very effective). Piersynzski, whose name I probably spelled wrong, will likely be taken.

First is pretty jammed up again, with Giambi getting voted in (and being the best), Sweeney looking like the only Royal, Konerko leading the league in RBI, Thome doing his thing, and Olerud having a great year. Certainly can't have five first basemen, so at least one is going to get squeezed - probably Konerko, which will be easier if Giambi or A-Rod passes him in RBI (not that I care about RBI, but a lot of people do and I think Torre does).

Second is slim, it's basically just Soriano and a bunch of average guys. Maybe Durham or Boone would get picked, but he might just go with Soriano and use one of the four SS candidates as a second basemen (a la Valentine using Pujols, a 3B/LF, at second last year).

Hillenbrand is an all right selection at third, but he doesn't really stand out from the pack IMO and I'd rather see somebody more established - Chavez, Ventura, or Glaus - go. But Hillenbrand is deserving based on this season, and I figure Ventura will go as a backup.

I don't feel like putting much effort into rummaging through possible backup outfielders (not much space between candidates), or the pitchers. I'd just like to say that I'd like to have Karsay go, he's been terrific and he's first in the majors in Adjusted Runs Prevented (http://www.baseballprospectus.com) .

This is probably because Garrett never walks - so he is more likely to collect an RBI in a RBI situation simply by putting the ball in play. Bernie has, quite often, drawn walks with RISP.

Is that a knock on Anderson or on Bernie? Neither, really, it depends on the situation, though in the long run, Bernie's better ability to get on base will lead to more runs, though not more RBI for him.
