They are all great choices - "Closing Time" has some great memories for me, and I love "Video Killed The Radio Star", "Come On Eileen", and "What Do All The People Know".

I thought of another three great ones:
"When I See You Smile" - Bad English
"Sex and Candy" - Marcy Playground
"Bittersweet Symphony" - The Verve (I know those of you in the UK/Europe will say they were not one-hit wonders, but they were here).

ahh, those were early on but I do remember them...actually, I don't hate that hooked on a feeling song - -my dad used to walk around singing it all the time which was funny!! :D that and tie a yellow ribbon and knock three times on the ceiling if you want me!! :D on the last one, wherever he was walking he'd stop and knock...my dad is a loon!! :D explains a lot, huh? :D

okay -- one more -- and I LOVE this song...anyone remember "They don't know" by Tracy Ullman?

Really? A shame - "Bittersweet Symphony"'s nowhere near as good as "Lucky Man", IMHO. The rest of their stuff is pretty repetitive, though. And for about three years they were nearly as big as Oasis over here, which is pretty heavy stuff. Sadly.

I've got the Crash Test Dummies CD - "God Shuffled His Feet" is far better than "Mmm Mmm Mmm", or whatever.

Others for consideration:

"Come Up And See Me (Make Me Smile)" - Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel
"Ooh La La" - The Wiseguys
"Joy" - Gay Dad (actually, they had a few singles, but they faded damn quick)

No way! They released five or six albums, then Brian Ferry went solo very successfully. "Street Life", "Avalon", "More Than This"? Maybe they never made it over the Atlantic, but Roxy Music are a very significant 70s band over here, who carried on producing for a long time. Ferry did a solo tour recently - sold out very quickly indeed.

Releasing an album does not a hit make, Saxman. Blue Cheer release several albums, but only had one hit song - "Summertime Blues". I know Roxy Music was fairly prolific, but "Love Is The Drug" was their only hit.... on this side of the Atlantic anyway (which is where I grew up and is where I'm talking about). Name another one that made the Top 40 Chart "over here", and I'll retract my submission.

Meanwhile, here's another one:

"Incense & Peppermint" by Strawberry Alarmclock

It was more of a "you're kidding!" "no way" than a "you're wrong" "no way" - I'd have put money on Roxy Music having at least one other Top 20 hit in the U.S., especially since they covered a lot of "classics"; Jealous Guy, for example. Does anyone have a link to a good Top 40 website that's searchable? I'm curious now.

EDIT: Found one. You're right, I'm wrong. Sorry. "Love Is the Drug" and "Dance Away" made it into the Top 40 of the YEAR during the 70s in the U.K.. I'm amazed they didn't cross over - Brian Ferry seems to me like exactly the kind of David Bowie Lite who would have been popular in the States.

Hey Saxman.... check out this site: http://www.dlc.fi/~hope/

It's got all of Brian Ferry's works on it and lists twenty-six (26) Roxy Music albums. This includes 4 "Best of's" and 4 "Live" albums, and a 4 CD set called "The Thrill of it All".

I must admit, I had no idea they were that prolific.... very impressive. They only fit this thread's topic by technical definition, having only had the one US "hit". But they certainly didn't just "disappear" as most one-hit-wonders do, so my initial post on them was wrong when I stated:

"Love Is The Drug" by Roxy Music (mid 70's). One big hit and gone!!!

My apologies....

No, no, you had it right - I had just assumed that their saturation of the U.K. market led to success in the States. Eno and Ferry are both big names over here, and that's where they got their start. It's a shame Roxy didn't have the exposure over there - I think some of their work would have been very popular. Especially "Avalon" - I love that album. Their album covers are also . . . um . . . provocative - good website! And cheers for the compliment. (I really need to find a hat-tipping smiley . . .)

I remember that one.... early eighties. I'm pretty sure it's the only hit MC ever recorded. I think he may have written a few other minor hits, recorded by other people. I believe Bette Midler recorded something of his and had some success with it.... don't know the name though.

I believe that was their only "hit". For ten (10) bonus points, who can tell me what the original name of the song was?

That song brings back one really funny memory
When we where kids, Wexy and I lived in a two family house
Our downstairs neighbors had 4 noisy kids
Our parents were at a wedding and theneighbors were being really loud so we turned the speakers down toward their apartment and blasted "In A Godda Da Vida"
Boy did we hear about the next day!

Bad guess. Here's a little info on Robert Palmer for you all:

"Addicted To Love" reached #1 in May 1986 on Billboard Charts (it was ranked #10 song of the year).

"Simply Irresistible" reached #2 in September 1988 (it was ranked #23 song of the year)

He also had a lesser hit with "Bad Case of Lovin' You", reaching #10 in July of 1979.

At any rate, Robert Palmer cannot be considered a "one-hit wonder". However, I do have an entry for this thread:
