I don't know if this has ever been posted before, but I just thought this would make an interesting topic for discussion. Do any of you know why the yanks have pinstripes on their uniforms and when this was first introduced by them? :P :NY: :NY: :NY: :NY:

Not this month no...
Anyhow...
In 1912, their final season at Hilltop Park, the Yankees as they were now commonly known made a fashionable debut at their home opener on April 11. Their traditional white uniforms were now trimmed with black pinstripes, creating a look that would become the most famous uniform design in sports history. The Yankees, however, were not the first team with pinstripes and would actually abandon the look for the next two seasons. By 1915, though, the pinstripes were back for good and, with the exception of the cap, the uniform would remain relatively unchanged.
As to why...I've heard many "theories" but no concrete "Here's why"...
Oh oh...I feel another info hunt coming on...

The Season Opener was reported in the New York Times
"The Yankees presented a natty appearance in their new uniforms of white with black stripes"
The uniform had the baggy, wool-flannel look; a closer fitting cap crown made from the same pin-striped fabric as the jersey & pants
The legendary NY monogram was emblazened on the left breast in all it`s glory

Does it have any photo's of the 1910 Highlanders uniform ? I have seen a little pic of one and it looks very sharp. High collar with an N on one side and a Y on the other and I think the collar was red...Also had the NY on the left sleeve...

Thanks for the information Michaels07 and Gehrig. My information about the yankee pinstripes is alittle different. I found this on tv...metro channel. They said that in 1923 the pinstripes were added to make Babe Ruth look thinner. I can't verify this information since it was acquired off the tv!:P :P :NY: :NY: :NY: :NY:

The Babe Ruth Era
" One of the Other myths that seem to eagerly consumed by the baseball public without factual support is the story that pinstripes were selected for the Yankees uniform by Owner Jacob Ruppert because they tended to offset the portly appearance of his prize acquistion-George Herman Ruth. Of course the truth that the New Yorkers were wearing Pinstripes when the Babe was still in the Orphanage."
"The Home uniform for Ruths first years as a Yankee (1920-21) still had the white bottoms on the stockings and the cap crown had matching pinstripes with a Blue bill and blue NY monogram on the cap front"
