View Full Version : Pinella AL manager of year-Bowa-NL winner
According to the MLB website- Lou Pinella has been named AL manager of the Year and Larry Bowa- who did a fine job keeping the Phils in contention all season, have been named Al and NL managers of the year.

Fair enough. Bowa did a great turnaround with a losing franchise, and Pinella pulled a rabbit out of the hat after losing a superstar.
Congratulations to both!

BOWA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pinella, you suck.
I'm glad for Piniella. He did a fine job.
Dumb question, but does anyone know if Jimy Williams got any votes? Obviously he shouldn't have won, but it's interesting the way Boston completely collapsed after his departure...:)

I believe he finished 4th or 5th in the voting - only manager to ever get votes after being fired I think they said. I still think firing him was a mistake . . .
EYUCK!!!! PINELLA HAS ALWAYS HAD A BAD ATTITUDE!
HE YELLS & MIGHT AS WELL STOMP HIS FEET IF HE DOESNT GET HIS WAY!
I feel Joe Torre Deserved More of A Chance then Pinella was given!!!

Two fiery guys got it this year lol!! :D Piniella definitely deserved it and I would have put Howe right behind him...I don't know as much about the NL, but it certainly seemed that Bowa was deserving enough... he was the runaway winner with 113 votes compared to the second place finisher with 48...I'll take their word for it!! :D
Congrats to Lou and Larry!! :)

It wasn't a dumb question cb2u -- it was dumb of Boston to get rid of him...idiots...here's the article and the blurb about Williams:
http://www.espn.go.com/mlb/news/2001/1114/1278065.html
Jimy Williams, fired by Boston on Aug. 16 after keeping his team in contention for most of the season, finished fourth with 12 third-place votes and 12 points. He was the first manager fired during a season to receive any votes since the BBWAA began the manager awards in 1983.
At the time Williams was fired, Boston was 65-53, two games behind Oakland in the AL wild-card standings and five games behind the New York Yankees in the AL East.
Boston went 17-26 under Williams' successor, Joe Kerrigan, and finished 13½ games behind the Yankees and 19½ games back of the Athletics.

Another dumb question: Has Joe Torre ever won it?

Now that's true Jean, but then so did Billy Martin, Earl Weaver, and many other great managers.
I feel Joe Torre Deserved More of A Chance then Pinella was given!!! [/B]
Mr. Torre won the AL MOY in 1996 and again in 1998 when he led the Yankees to a 114-48 regular season record. It would be very hypocritical not to bestow this honor on Lou, given the job he has done in Seattle.

Thanks, b-ball. Interesting read.
P.S.-- it was dumb, but we wouldn't have it any other way! So typically RedSox...
