I was going to guess it was in an All-Star game, but the Q. says it was a homer for the Yankees...

I'd guess it would be a guy traded - and not having time to get a proper fitted Yankee uniform - like Fielder or Canseco.

I'm gonna guess it was in that game vs the Tigers in '96 @ Tiger Stadium where they all wore the replica Negro League uniforms. Someone homered that day, I can't remember who. Tino maybe?

Stars uniforms and the Yankees wore the uniforms of
the New York Black Yankees. Matt Howard of the Yanks who
was with the Yanks part of 96 hit his only major league homer
in the Black Yankees uniform :)

Matt Howard!! I totally forgot about him!! What ever happened to that guy? They traded him or something the next year and you never heard from him again. Kind of like a lot of ballplayers, unfortunately...:(

how about this one: why and when the Yankees put pinstripes on their uniforms?

I'm also interested in knowing if the Black Yankees were related to the NYY org.

They supposedly put them on around the time Ruth joined the team because he'd look thinner with them, Col Ruppert said... that was the rumor. In reality, they were there before that, I think.

I read once that it had something to do with the whole wall street thing in an effort to look more businesslike

There's a great book about the Negro Leagues by a
guy named Robert Peterson called "Only The Ball Was White"
which is a good read. When Jackie Robinson was contacted
by Branch Rickey before being signed, he thought a
"Brown Dodger" team was being formed.

When, In 1912, The New York Highlanders uniforms added pinstripes. Why...good question...

The NY Black Yankees had no affiliation with the New York YANKEES.

They played from 1932 - 1950. They were not associated with any league until they joined the Negro National League in 1936 and stayed with them until 1948.

They were generally an extension of the New York Lincoln Giants. The Black Yankees filled a void created when the Giants folded after the 1930 season. This team was the doormat of the Negro National League, usually ending up at the bottom, and never doing any better than fifth in a six-team league.

Famous stars of the Black Yankees: George "Mule" Suttles, Walter Cannady, Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe, John Henry "Pop" Lloyd, Satchel Paige

I remember reading somewhere one time that it was done in an effort to project a more businesslike posture, hence the Wall Street reference earlier, I thought it was 1914 though

Apr 11, 1912 Pinstripes first appear on Highlanders' uniforms, creating a look that would become the most famous uniform design in sports.

The only game Matt Howard homered in was June 8, 1996 - but Bernie and Tino each homered in that game also, so wouldnt there be THREE Yankees to accomplish the said feat??

I don't remember those guys homering, penguin4 remembers Tino
so you guys were both right.
