Just as you can run, but can't hide, I've never acquired baseball cards, rarely watch TV (changing very shortly), and don't know some of the positions of the Yankees during the '70s and '80s. I feel a great void.

I know that Sparky Lyle and Goose Gossage (who talked to baseballs, I think) were relievers, but Craig Nettles played 3B, I think, but unsure of which positions Bobby Murcer (of all people), Reggie (CF?) played.

Hoping I can post this and still maintain some dignity, so please be kind, I'm still a Yankee fan, just didn't follow our guys as closely as I should've.

Hey JY, there's nothing wrong with a quest for knowledge, and if you want to know more about the Yankees you've certainly come to the right place. I learn new things about my favorite team all the time. Don't worry about your dignity: it's intact.

I see Aurelio Rodriguez listed. That was pretty sad what happened to him last year - killed in a car crash in Mexico. He was a pedestrian and got nailed on the sidewalk.

One correction, Gehrig, The Bobby Brown that went on to become an MD & AL pres played for the Yanks in the 40's & 50's.

When Murcer first came up in 65, didn't he play shortstop? As I recall, his fielding was atrocious, and he was sent to the minors. Then he came up as an OF. Am I correct on that point???

Happy memories! I saw my first ballgame with the early 70's and I remember a lot of those names with fondness. Although I was a little kid back then it really makes you feel old to see guys like Mel and Murcer coaching and announcing when I remember them playing. The teams of the mid to late 70's were my coming of age as a baseball fan. My favorite players to this day are guys who were on those teams; Sparky, Munson, Nettles, Guidry. Thanks for a refresher.

Someone mentioned to me that Danny Cater (http://www.baseball-reference.com/c/caterda01.shtml) was traded from the Sox for Sparky Lyle (http://www.baseball-reference.com/l/lylesp01.shtml). This seems the case, because they switched teams in the same year. Is this true?
