On August 19th, 1962 Gino Cimoli, Wayne Causey, and Billy Bryan of the Athletics hit consecutive HRs in the seventh inning, but Elston Howard has two HRs and eight RBI; Bill Skowron, a HR and four RBI; Mickey Mantle, a grand slam and seven RBI, as the Yankees routed the A's 21-7. Mantle adds 2 stolen bases before Jack Reed takes over CF and has two at bats.

Jack Reed's Yankee Career Numbers:

Outfield 1961 - 1963
Regular Season
Games - 222
Batting Average - .233
HR - 1
RBI - 6

World Series
Games - 3
Batting Average - .000
HR - 0
RBI - 0

Another Jack Reed tidbit...On June 24, 1962 Jack Reed’s two-run, 22nd-inning home run ends the longest game in Yankee history, a 9-7 win at Detroit. The game lasted 7 hours and 22 minutes. It was the only homer Reed would hit in the majors.

Yeah, I remember watching that game (holy s**t, that was almost 4 decades ago!!). I think it was a saturday. Reed's only home run. Jack Reed was Mantle's "legs" replacing the Mick in the outfield in the late innings. As I recall, that job as Mickey's replacement was later performed by Ross Moschitto, right??

Moschitto's stats:

1965 and 1967 season totals (hitting):
games: 110
at bats: 36
hits: 6
home runs: 1
doubles and/or triples: 0
RBI: 3
walks: 1
strike outs: 14
SB: 0
OBP: .184
BA: .167

Moschitto's only 2 major league seasons (65 and 67) were with the Yanks. I guess he spent the 66 season in the minors. Ironically, like Reed, he had only 1 major league HR. As I recall, it was also a pivotal HR to win a game. I rememebr reading in the paper how excited he was to hit it -- he was so nervously excited in the locker room that he couldn't button his shirt, his hands were shaking.

Moschitto and Reed were Mickey's legs like Arroyo was Whitey's arm in the late innings.
