Interesting...especially about next year...anybody else know anything about this guy?

When the Yankees talked with the Padres regarding lefthander Sterling Hitchcock on July 30, San Diego asked for outfielder Marcus Thames to be included in the deal. The Yankees refused to included Thames in the deal as he has developed into one of the organization's most encouraging outfield prospects.

A draft-and-follow who first joined the farm system in 1997, Thames has developed his run-producing skills quite nicely this season for Class AA Norwich. Through his first 120 games this season, he has 25 homers and 78 RBIs, and, even more impressively a .580 slugging percentage and .399 on-base percentage.

Look for the 24-year-old to join Class AAA Columbus next year but since Paul O'Neill and Chuck Knoblauch won't be with the Yankees next year, Thames could compete for a reserve role in spring training.

i remember earlier in the season people on espn saying the yankees had no minor-league outfielders they could trade (i don't remember who for - some big name)..

it looks like they have two very good outfielders in their minor league system, though rivera is better than thames overall (better numbers and 2 years younger)...

hopefully thames will continue that production in AAA, and either end up with the yankees, or be used to trade for something solid.

I see Thames play in Norwich. Big bat. Went deep in one of the games I seen.

The kind of numbers he has put up in Norwich are definite prospect numbers and indicate that he could probably play next year in the majors. He's had a VERY impressive year.

One player we shouldn't forget about is John Rodriguez. He's left-handed and one year younger than Thames.

I believe that both will be major league players (at least 4th outfielders and platoon players.)

I seen Rodriguez in Norwich too. Him and Thames both went deep in one game.

I said on the New York Times forum two years ago this kid was gonna be a major leaguer. Everyone to a person said he wasn't. I think I'll go over and stick my tongue out at them again. :P
