to add to this, i think he hurt himself on the drain because he was trying to pull up so he wouldn't run into the center fielder..

I think his problems actually stemmed from his childhood. He had something called osteyomyelitis (sp???). At one point, the doctors were going to amputate one of his legs. His mom nixed that idea, and took him someplace where he was given the miracle drug of the 20th century - penicillin (sp? again, sorry)

While playing high school football Mickey was accidentally kicked in the leg. The wound developed into the bone disease osteomyelitis, and almost cost Mickey his leg. Mickey's mother refused to let doctors remove his leg and transferred him to the crippled children's hospital in Oklahoma City, where he received a brand-new wonder drug, penicillin. It saved his leg, but Mickey was plagued with leg problems for the remainder of his life. However, this bout with osteomyelitis rendered Mickey unfit for military service for life, another issue that arose later in life.

He did have Osteomyelitis as a kid, But his knee injuries,first of series of leg ailments happened chasing a fly ball with Di Maggio.Mantle caught a cleat in a stadium out field drain and damaged his right knee.:D :NY: :NY: :NY: :NY: :NY: :NY: :NY:

he pulled up because he did not want to run into joe d. who call for it at the last second. just think if he was never hurt. still was 3.3 seconds from the left side . i think.
