It brought back memories of 1920 with the death of Ray Chapman who was beaned by Yankee righthander Carl Mays.
This occurred in 1937.
Other than the Yankees,Name the opposing team?
Who was the pitcher? Who got beaned?

Though unbeknownst (thats a weird lookin word  ) to Mutt, Cochranes real first name was Gordon... :D
Bob Porterfield, a Yankee pitcher was beaned in the early 50's at Yankee Stadium and at first it looked as it might have been far more serious than it was.
I saw that game on TV, playing Hookey, as usual, from school to see the Yankees play.

Cochrane was taken to St Elizabeth's Hospital at Fort Washington Ave & 190th street for treatment. It is now a co-operative residence.

What ever happened to Bob Porterfield. He was a 3/4 righthanded thrower or side arm?He was effective for a few years.
Porterfield threw 3/4. I looked up his record on CNN.SI.
He came up to the Yankees in 1948 with a 5-3 record in 16 games. He went 2-5 in 49 and was 1-1 with an 8.69 ERA in 1951 (the year he got beaned, I think). In 51 he pitched in 2 games with no decisions and a 15 ERA for 3 innings when he was traded to the Washington Senators. I think the Yankees got Jackie Jensen in that trade. Porterfield did pretty well for the senators going 22-10 in 53. He also played for the Red Sox Pirates and Cubs before calling it quits in 59. He wound up with an undestinguished 87-97 record and a 3.97 ERA playing for the most part with some bad clubs.
I can't but help feeling that if it weren't for the beaning he could have had a great career. He had so much promise

Nome, you crack me up! I, too, used to play hookey to watch the Yanks. OK, I lived in OKLAHOMA (sigh!) so the only time there WAS a Yankee game on on a weekday was the series, but if I knew it would not get turned on at school and left on, I had a horrendous stomach ache that day that magically cleared up after the game was over! (in grade school, occasionally we had a teacher that would play the ballgame)
