One of Steinbrenner's biggest mistakes ever - often overlooked - was being too stupid and cheap to get a real relief pitcher after he let Gossage go (after some mutual acrimony) and coercing Righetti into becoming a relief pitcher.
Righetti never was as good an RP as we hoped, and he'd have been better as a starter.
For those who forget, in his last Yankee year, Gossage ripped Steinbrenner many times for a variety of things, including calling him the "fat boy".
That late Seventies, early Eighties Yankee team always made for entertaining reading in the tabloids! .
