UPDATE: Apparently this video is causing a big stir online and was unauthorized by the climbers. The guy who had it on his engineering site had it removed from his site and from youtube. Here's two more working links, see it while you can:

I don't consider myself to be acrophobic (been sky-diving, love roller coaster rides, etc) but that is f*cking insane. Not really but I could never do that.

Did they went up there change a light bulb. I can imagine a convo at the top going something like:
"You got the bulb?"
"What bulb?"

How about this?

A few years ago, I tried to conquer my fear of heights and my fear of flying at the same time by going skydiving - didn't really work out how I'd hoped

Well you're here now, so it couldn't have been THAT bad :)

That was the worst part for me. Hanging there at 4,000 ft above the ground while the guy I was tethered to decided it would be a good idea to losen the harness to give us so "space". The free fall was excellent though.

The 4 seconds of terror I could have done without, when they opened the door, the tandem guy was like "OK, we'll jump on 3" he then counts "One, Two..." and pushes me out right after 2 -- probably the only way to deal with any potential last minute panic, but come on.
Still don't like flying but I enjoyed just slowly floating to the ground

I don't really like heights; I'm not terrified by "normal heights", like less than 100ft; but **** that.
I do have a fear of heights, yet I love roller coasters and I've been hot air ballooning but that video is just insane. NO WAY!
I found this comment to be hilarious.
i wonder why didn't the tower bend?
i mean seriously, how can such a slim construction resist to his 1000 lbs balls?

I wouldn't say I have a big fear of heights, but that looked pretty brutal.

lol, seriously though, it's pretty amazing that such a narrow structure, taller than the sears tower can stand up so reliably without bending or wind effect, and also support three 200lb guys with full gear. You definitely can't skimp on cheap steel. I'm surprised they don't design rails & robots that can scale these things and perform routing maintenance.
Also, at the very top is a red antenna that is bolted in, I wonder how they got that thing in place. Helicopter + climbers?

I'm not completely afraid of heights, just the falling and dying part.
Hitman23

It's not the falling as much as the sudden stop that concerns me.

I'm not only not afraid of heights, I love them. The higher the better. And what's the difference once you get to a certain height? If you die from falling 100 feet or you die from falling 1500 feet you're just as dead.

For me, the scariest part of a roller coaster is going up. If that helps...

Not afraid of heights. I've parasailed, skydived, bungee jumped and want to BASE jump and hangglide one day. Also have been up in a hot air balloon.
With that said, that climb is f*cking insane. For whatever reason, that scares me to death while the things I listed above I have done or could all do very easily.

you're a hot air balloon
I did this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59caVJuXRZk&feature=fvst) in Vegas. Heights don't both me.

At 4:00 is a pretty ballsy move, and notice how the guy checks every peg after the first one he grabs pops off

I have done lots of ladder work 20ft.+ off the ground and roofing where all you have is a board at your feet three stories up and you went around corners by hooking your claw hammer on the top and swinging yourself to the other side. I confess I get seriously nervous but I can man up and do it. I'm sure I could handle the first part inside the cage. After that, fuhgeddaboutit!

happens at the top just barely off camera view at 4:26, then you see him putting it back in. At least that's what it looks like, he may just have been fiddling with it to test it

Now I see what you mean. Maybe his hand just slipped off. But ... if you're right, think about this. :looking: Isn't it a loose peg that he's gonna have to step on the higher he climbs. :scared:

It's not heights that scare me - it's the laws of gravity. That whole 9.8 meters per second squared thing has a way of turning me into a pansy when I'm up high.
No way in hell would I do that...
What bothered me the most about the video though was not the heights, (that only bothers me if I am the one so high up) but the constant shaking of the helmet cam, bobbing up and down made me nauseous.

What bothered me the most about the video though was not the heights, (that only bothers me if I am the one so high up) but the constant shaking of the helmet cam, bobbing up and down made me nauseous. The realism of the view actually made me feel just like I do when I get to an uncomfortable level of height. I get this feeling in the pit of my gut and then I get very dizzy and feel like I'm being pushed forward. It's very strange and it's always been something I could not conquer. I couldn't believe I got it watching the video.
Actually, scratch that now that I think about it, it actually does make sense. When I see someone else balancing at an uncomfortable height, or I see some sort of danger I get that feeling in my gut. Happens a lot with my kids. If they're doing something they shouldn't be in a place that is potentially dangerous it's the same feeling.
