Enjoy retirement, Lou.

I think it is a little strange that he wouldn't play out the string. It's less than a month and a half after all. I guess he just can't stand to watch the Cubs anymore. I can't blame him.

Maybe it wasn't totally his decision. Who knows.

Can't blame him. That whole team is under achievers.

Lou has been awful for the Cubs, he lost his fire years ago.

"As many know, the several weeks since that announcement was made have been very difficult on a family level, requiring two leaves of absence from the club," Piniella said. "While I fully intended to manage this club the rest of the season, a family situation at home now requires my full attention." :( I hope it's nothing too serious. Good luck, Lou.

Suzyn reported on her pregame that his mom is very ill and he wanted to be able to spend this time with her.

Kay said the same thing, that it's his mother and he's going to Tampa to be with her.

Best wishes to his mom. If this is the end for him, it's been quite a career in baseball.

The Cubs are sure sending him out on a fine note. It is 16-5 Atlanta right now...the 7th and 8th were terrible.

To this day the image I have of Piniella is of him being blinded by the sun in right field, falling to his knees, and putting up his glove to make that catch in the 1978 playoff game.

What a career Lou Pinella had in baseball.

1969 Rookie of the Year with the Kansas City Royals.

Won two World Series rings as a New York Yankee 1977 and 1978

Won a World Series as a manger with the Cincinnati Reds in 1990

2× AL Manager of the Year in 1995 and 2001 (116-win season) with the Seattle Mariners

NL Manager of the Year in 2008 with the Chicago Cubs.

Tons of managerial outbursts and meltdowns that made pure entertainment.

What a career. Enjoy retirement Lou, go be with your family.

Haha.

I don't even care about the Cubs but man it was depressing to see them get CRUSHED this afternoon. Lou's press conference after was really quite sad too. :(

Yikes - just saw the press conference..Lou broke into the ugly cry. I teared up myself. :(

It's a shame that the Cubs have really underachieved and suffered from bad luck since 2008 concluded. I hope the time he's spending with his family and handling his unfortunate situation will do him some good. And not to sound selfish, but I wouldn't mind him showing up to Old Timer's Day next season and getting back into the Yankees family. I'll try not to watch his press conference. I don't like seeing people so profoundly upset. :(

That was rough, I'm generally pretty solid, but boy, he gets to "This'll be the last time I put on a uniform..." and I had to take a breather. :(

Hope he enjoys retirement, and maybe we see him around the game from time to time.

The game of baseball is a little less interesting without Lou.

Enjoy life life Lou and thanks for all the great memories!

Yep - that uniform comment was hard to watch. However, it's refreshing to see somebody show genuine emotion rather than the parade of "I'm sorry" half-baked apologies we've seen. I hope the time he spends with his mother is as peaceful as possible.

Thanks for some truly great moments in MLB, Lou.

Yeah, that was rough. Hopefully, we'll see him around the game next year. Perhaps with the Yankees like spring training or even at Old Timers Day.

Did anyone see the clip of Lou's speech on Good Day, LA? The idiot host played the portion of Lou's speech where he was in the ugly cry and saying it was the last time he'd wear a uniform..and they cut to the host and he said something like "yeah until someone offers you more money next year." And he wasn't joking around.

I saw the clip on The Soup. Did anyone else see it?
