Low odds, but it would be super ironic if Pierce ended up leaving him.I think this a pure money grab by Pierce. Not that I blame him, I'd do the same. I think he comes back on a 3 or 4 year deal. I mean, where is he going to go? The Clippers? Good luck. He has to be smarter than that.
As currently constituted (or rather, soon to be) this is a Top 3 team in the East.

That's actually better than the Jerome James' signing, if someone is stupid enough to offer him. Milicic is still only 25 years old and what he needs is playing time. When the Timberwolves started him last season, he was decent. Also, the rumor deal's fourth year is only partially guaranteed.

Well, Phil Jackson is back. Get that 4th 3-peat my man!!!
The only way I dont see LA winning again next year is a) injuries or b) somehow Bosh, Wade and James end up on the same team. As good as my Knicks would be if we could get James/Bosh, James/JJ or James/Amare to add to Gallo, Chandler, Douglas....it still wouldnt be as good as what LA has. At least not yet.
Amazing, the NBA has a salary cap yet these teams waste tons of $ on overpaying players. In a messed up kind of way overpaying players is good for individual teams (eventually). It is very rare to have a FA period like this one. So you have to acquire players by trade. And the only way to get a real good player (who would more than likely have a big contract) is to trade players whose contracts match up. Especially if it is an expiring contract. Those are the best. Like when the Celtics got KG, that never would have happened if not for Theo Ratliff's stupid contract.
Pierce will re-sign with the Celtics.
And apparently they are talking to (or did talk to) David Lee. I have no clue how they would be able to swing a deal for him.

He's taking a paycut for this year, but then his deal was done. He wasn't going anywhere so he just guaranteed himself an additional $40 million and finishing his career in Boston.
I think he's taking a pay cut in the sense that he may have been able to get more money from another team.

By trading a player to Toronto, they would be farther away from the salary cap threshold, and thus would have more money to give to LeBron/Wade/Bosh if necessary (or perhaps to divide among two minor free agents).

Here's the letter word by word from Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert...
http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2010/07/gilberts_letter_to_fans_james.html
Dear Cleveland, all of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers supporters wherever you may be tonight;
As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.
This was announced with a several-day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his "decision" unlike anything ever "witnessed" in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.
Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.
The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.
There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.
You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.
You have given so much and deserve so much more.
In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight: "I personally guarantee that the Cleveland Cavaliers will win an NBA Championship before the self-titled former 'king' wins one."
You can take it to the bank.
If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our "motivation" to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.
Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there.
Sorry, but that's simply not how it works.
This shocking act of disloyalty from our homegrown "chosen one" sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And "who" we would want them to grow up to become.
But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called "curse" on Cleveland, Ohio.
The self-declared former "King" will be taking the "curse" with him down south. And until he does "right" by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.
Just watch.
Sleep well, Cleveland. Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day...
I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only:
DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue...
Dan Gilbert

Good for LeBron. How many times do we say an athlete is "all about the money?" LeBron just proved he's not all about the money -- he took less of it because he thinks taking less money is his best chance at winning a Championship. Good for him.

Good for LeBron. How many times do we say an athlete is "all about the money?" LeBron just proved he's not all about the money -- he took less of it because he thinks taking less money is his best chance at winning a Championship. Good for him.
He took the easy way out. And its also the way he went about it. He dragged everyone thru the mud and played everyone.....apparently for his own enjoyment. Cavs fans have the right to feel the way they do.
Let Operation Stop Miami commence. Don't care who does it, even the (gulp) Celtics.
Same, I will root hard for the Celtics against the Heat.

You gotta believe Shaq will follow to Miami, either on an MLE or vet min. Makes too much sense not to happen.
Miami can't offer the MLE.

What superstar is ever going to want to cross Lebron and play for the Cavs after what Gilbert just said? He really should have slept on it but thank god he didn't because placing a curse on Lebron could be the funniest thing ever.

They can once they go over the cap though, correct? If not, why not?
Gilbert feels James quit on the Cavs during their second-round series against the Boston Celtics, who rallied from a 2-1 deficit to eliminate Cleveland.
"He quit," Gilbert said. "Not just in Game 5, but in Games 2, 4 and 6. Watch the tape. The Boston series was unlike anything in the history of sports for a superstar."

Its funny this comes up. This isnt revisionist history...it was said by MANY in the playoffs thread at the time....that there was something "off" about how James was playing. He seemed passive. Unwilling to take games over like he did all season. Almost as if he was just going thru the motions. He had a big 4th quarter in Game 1, and huge 1st half in Game 6. The other games? He was just "there". It was an odd performance...and it was pointed out by many when it was happening.

The King?
Of what, exactly?
Hype? Wasting time? Stacking the deck?
Check, check and double-check.
So LeBron James is going to Miami. Man, did he ever pick the right place to win. Just don't forget why people say to be careful what you wish for.
Because when James finally does win it all, chances are good he will be as much a follower as a leader, a bigger, better, badder version of Scottie Pippen, another prince who collected a fistful of rings yet was never really cut out to be king.
He could do worse, of course. The shame is James could have done better.
A real king would have dug in his heels in Cleveland and redoubled his effort to patch the cracks in the foundation of a franchise that's already spent more than seven seasons and hundreds of millions trying to build him a throne. That's what Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Kobe Bryant did. Maybe even give the Cavs a hometown discount, taking less money than he was worth to free up cap space down the road, the way Tim Duncan did.
Not LeBron.
He's lighting out for South Beach to hang with superfriends Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, while the rest of us recover from an hour-long infomercial that was conceived and choreographed by his advisers, then aided and abetted by ESPN. The announcement was expected to draw in audiences rivaling Tiger Woods' apology and the O.J. verdict — the two biggest non-sports sports stories ever. And just like those two, James is probably the only guy coming out of it who actually believed what he was saying.
Russian billionaire and new Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov may not be an NBA insider yet, but he already knows how the game is played off the court. Getting in what is among the first of a thousand expected digs at the move, he predicted even before the announcement that joining the bona fide All-Stars awaiting James in Miami would "diminish his brand."
Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy was even more pointed.
"Come on, an hour long? OK, it takes 15 seconds to say, 'I've decided to stay in Cleveland (http://topics.abcnews.go.com/topic/Cleveland).' But we've got another 59 minutes and 45 seconds to, what, promote LeBron James? As if," Van Gundy told the local newspaper, "we don't do that enough"
Frankly, that's about all anybody remotely connected to the NBA did for the last two years. Attention hound that he's become, James milked every last drop. He wore a New York Yankees hat to a playoff game against the Indians in Cleveland (http://topics.abcnews.go.com/topic/Cleveland) and a Dallas Cowboys cap to a Browns' season opener.
James said that he'll always consider Akron home, which is convenient, since he also has it's area code, 330, tattooed on another part of his hide. But outside his house, he's likely to be viewed with the same kind of disdain that northeast Ohioans reserved for Art Modell, the NFL owner who ripped the Browns franchise out of Cleveland and ran all the way to Baltimore with it.
"You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal," Cavs owner Dan Gilbert said in an open letter to fans on the team's website. He went on to guarantee the Cavaliers would win a championship before James did: "You can take it to the bank."
Maybe it hurts more because James is one of their own, maybe the best athlete most of them will ever see, and now even he doesn't want to be there.
Some king he turned out to be.

Was the TV show ridiculous? Without question. But that was as much ESPN's doing as it was LeBron's. LeBron is being very unfairly villified, and I'm having trouble comprehending it. He was a free agent, and went through the process of finding a place to play. What's wrong with that?

If he wanted to go to Miami....and join up with his superfriends...then fine. I think this was their plan all along, and the rumors of it being hatched in Beijing during the Olympics was probably accurate.
If so...then he should have just made his intentions clear from the beginning. "I want to play with Bosh and Wade and do it in Miami". Thats just being respectful...especially to a group of fans in Cleveland that worshipped the ground you walked on. Dont drag everyone thru this stupid dog and pony show, and leave the Cavs and their fans twisting in the wind. He basically just took a collective dump on the city during this whole process, and then kicked them in the balls for good measure with his contrived reality TV-esque ESPN "special".
I dont wanna hear anymore crap about him telling everyone he wants to be an immortal or a global icon. Jordan would have never ran away and hid, neither would have Kobe. They would have built their own team and tried to beat Wade. We didnt seen Jordan run away and hide in a cocoon behind Magic in LA, Bird in Boston, Isiah in Detroit or Clyde in Portland. He didnt give up when he couldnt beat Detroit....and decide to join them. He lost to them three straight years in the playoffs--but he just worked to better himself and his team. Cant have your cake and eat it too.....if he wants to be a Pippen and be a #2 behind Wade and win rings that way...then fine. Dont then try to con everyone in the process by making himself out to be bigger then the game.
This will totally blow up in his face too because he isnt gonna win in Miami. It takes more then 3 guys to win. By not seeing that, it disparages what great role players like Grant, Rodman, Kukoc, Harper, Paxson did for Chicago....what Horry, Fisher, Shaw etc did for LA in the 2000s, or what Cooper, Rambis, Scott etc. did for LA in the 80s.

I have no problem with James wanting to go to a situation that gives him a better chance to win a ring. Any pro athelete who says it's not important is lying. I also don't have a problem with him waiting to see what happened with his buddies. It was common knowledge that there was a good chance he'd played his last season in Cleveland, but the fans still had hopes he'd stay.
The way he chose to say "good-bye" - intentional or not - stuck a knife in the stomach of Cavs fans. He twisted it by making not only those fans, but others in NY, Miami and Chicago sit in front of a TV for a prime time announcement, hanging on to a thread. He did not wake up yesterday morning and decide, "I'm going to Miami." He owed the Cavs the courtesy of revealing his decision before he went on national TV. He owed that courtesy to the other teams who rolled out the red carpet and pulled out all the stops to convince him to sign.
Then, on top of that circus, there's an hour long farce on ESPN, which he claimed the proceeds from that show would go to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Please, spare me the theatrics. Write a check. He makes more money in one day than most of us see in one year. What kind of message do you thinks this whole sorry act sends to young, impressionable kids who worship The King?
I heard part of his statement this morning on Mike & Mike. He said that fans in Cleveland watched him grow from an 18 year old boy to a 25 year old man. Well, a real man wouldn't have taken the back door out of town. He would have faced Cleveland fans with a press conference announcing his decision. Then, he if still wanted to go on ESPN for an hour, answer questions and ask for donations for his charity of choice - fine.
I hope when he returns for that first game against his former team that he gets all the HEAT he deserves.

It won't be long until one of them calls him out for that now that he's gone and I wouldn't be surprised to see some hard fouls when they meet up. Not going to say I didn't want him on Knicks but after that tank job i rather have carmello.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/basketball/nba/2010-07-09-james-show-espn-ratings_N.htm
LeBron James' TV show The Decision played to 7.3% of U.S. television homes, according to early ratings from ESPN, making the sit-down program in which he revealed his next NBA stop the network's top-rated non-NFL show of 2010.
The program ran from 9-10:15 p.m. ET, with the most viewers tuned in from 9:15-9:30 (9.6%) when James said he was heading to Miami's South Beach to team with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, both of whom said Wednesday they're going to play for the Heat next season.
Based on the overnight ratings in 56 cities, the James telecast was the highest-rated program of the night on both cable and broadcast TV, according to ESPN.
The top three local markets were Cleveland (26.0 ); Columbus (14.2) and Miami (12.8). Chicago ranked sixth with a 10.7 and New York ranked seventh at 10.4.
Last night's telecast — from the Boys and Girls Club in Greenwich, Conn. — exceeded the audience for ESPN's interview with Tiger Woods in March, which posted a 0.4 rating. It also trumped ESPN's interview with Alex Rodriguez in 2009.
There was more than TV, as fans followed the James saga through other media outlets. ESPN says the decision attracted more than 300,000 unique viewers on ESPN3.com, one of the largest audiences ever for a non-World Cup match.

As a Knicks fan, I hate the fact that the Heat have arguably the best trio in NBA history. But as an NBA fan, it's going to be a hell of a lot of fun to watch. With some of the best bigs in the L moving to the East in the past few years, it looks like the power has shifted back to the East.
The Heat will be nasty, but I think w/ the Bulls pickup of Korver, the best front court in the east, and the improvement of Rose, they will be side by side w/ the Heat all season for the best record.

LOL nice video. They really are the nWo of the NBA. I wonder if after they win games...will they beat up the opposing players and spraypaint "Heat" on their backs while giving the Wolfpac sign?
This really is like something out of a WWE storyline. Its what they call in wrestling a "double turn". The former popular crowd favorite, who "fought the good fight" and tried to win on his own, turned his back on his loyal fans (apparently giving up after realizing he didnt have what it took to win on his own)....and joined forces with a former champion looking to reclaim glory (Wade) and a good player who was stuck in basketball purgatory and is now also looking to make a name for himself (Bosh). These three arrogant and evil ones, now full fledged heels...are now looking to take control of the league, dominate and annihilate everyone in their paths...and do it in "their way".
Meanwhile the former villain out West, a proven champion and winner, is now being looked to by the people that were betrayed and the people who are simply disgusted by the arrogance of this trio who think they will easily dominate the league. The common fans are looking to this former villian (and his teammates) to "save everyone" from this evil, diabolical trio....and keep order restored in the league. This champion also wants to put these three in their place, and remind them who has 5 championship rings on his fingers. This former heel is now looked at as the babyface, the guy the fans now have a newfound respect for after seeing the way the evil trio (esp James) has handled themselves the past few weeks.

I just got finished listening to SAS with Francesa from a couple of days ago. Interesting stuff.
Knicks- was never an option for Lebron. They were worried about D'Antoni lack of a defense style. Lebron knows defense wins championships. Lebron worried about how long Donnie Walsh would be around to continue to build up the team. If Isaiah had a big role with the organization, that might had help get Lebron.
Nets- Never an option. Only got a meeting because he's friends with Jay-z. Lebron had no interest in going to Newark.
The special was in Greenwich, CT to tweak the Knicks/NY. He's that type of person that would do something like that.
Wade was in his ear a lot about coming to Miami to win championships. Very good friends with Wade. The 'Dream Team' almost didn't happen because Bosh wanted his money and Houston was willing to do a sign and trade. Wade told Bosh to stop messing around and the prize is a championship. Bosh said okay.
Wouldn't surprise him if Lebron has an opt out clause after 3 years and goes to the Nets when they go to Brooklyn. Knicks will be an option too.

Only if Durant has already joined one of those two.

I never thought LeBron was humble. Ever.
What I thought he was was a guy who was an alpha-dog, a businessman, and someone who wanted to be the greatest player ever. A cocky, affable, assh*le who wanted to own the game of basketball, build his own wing in the basketball hall of fame, and smile for millions in endorsements.
Instead I find out he's a jittery, weak-minded p*ssy.

As a NBA fan, I'll have fun watching LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade play together.
As a fan of any NBA team not named the Miami Heat, not so much.
The only time I'll root for those three: when they play in the Olympics and the FIBA World Championships as part of Team USA.
The NBA needs it's Sting (seeing as they already have their Nick Patrick and Eric Bischoff). I just hope it doesn't take a year and a half this time.

It might have to be Kobe. Although at this point, I'd be ok with the Pierce/KG/Allen faction, with Rondo as the athletic sidekick and Jermaine O'Neal as one of the enforcers (think of a name, I cant lol) trying to take down the nWo Heat.

Just remember back to Starrcade 1997. The entire WCW lockerroom coming out to the ring to congratulate Sting and celebrate. Hopefully that is the NBA every June for the forseeable future.

I don't see Wade, James, and Bosh as the nWo, that's giving them way too much respect/credit. I see them as the Dungeon of Doom. Wade is "The Giant," the only member of the group to win the heavyweight title (NBA championship). James is the biggest star, so we'll say he's the Taskmaster Kevin Sullivan since Sullivan led the group. Bosh is a big man who has good numbers but hasn't done anything on his own. We'll call him The Shark.
Kobe is the Hulkster in this case, Gasol is Sting, Artest is the Macho Man Randy Savage, and Odom can be Lex Luger.

Bynum will be a big x-factor in this. If he's healthy, the Lakers will abuse the Heat in the paint. There's no way they can matchup with Gasol and Bynum, not to mention Odom. They're going to have to take the approach that the Celtics have taken against star perimeter players and just out-physical the Heat.

I didn't think it was possible to sound more ignorant than Gilbert, but I gotta hand it to Jackson....he found a way. As ill-advised ( for an owner ) as Gilbert's rant was, I know he was just saying out loud what a lot of Cavs fans were feeling. There are enough legitimate racial issues in the world today - there's no need somebody to manufacture them.
So far, David Stern has made the most rational and intelligent comments.
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=AiAzlhCR8.R2NBWH2H5m2iY5nYcB?
slug=ys-sternlebron071210
“Had he asked my advice in advance, I might have suggested that he advise Cleveland at an earlier time than apparently he did that he was leaving, even without announcing where he was going, so we could have eliminated that,” Stern after a meeting with the NBA’s board of governors. “I would have advised him not to embark on what has become known as ‘The Decision.’
“I think that the advice that he received on this was poor. His performance was fine. His honesty and his integrity shine through. But this decision was ill conceived, badly produced and poorly executed. Those who were interested in it were given our opinion prior to its airing.”
[snip]
Stern said he had fined Gilbert $100,000 for the comments.
One league source said the Cavaliers’ media relations staff begged Gilbert to not send the email, but he ignored the pleas and wanted it out immediately. Gilbert also told The Associated Press that he felt James quit on the Cavs during the playoffs the past two seasons.
“Remarks by Dan Gilbert, the owner of the Cavaliers, catalyzed as they may have been by hurt with respect to the manner and the fact for himself, his team, and particularly for the people of Cleveland, though understandable, were ill advised and imprudent,” Stern said.
The Rev. Jesse Jackson had previously criticized Gilbert’s comments, saying they”personify a slave master mentality” and sounded like they were directed at a “runaway slave.”
“Equally imprudent, I believe, are the remarks by my good friend Jesse Jackson, which purport to make this into a racial matter,” Stern said. “I find that to be, however well meaning Jesse may be in the premises on this one, he is, as he rarely is, mistaken. I would have told him so had he called me before he issued his statement this morning.

I also think they're very beatable come playoff time. All this talk about how awesome they're filling out the roster is pretty ridiculous in my opinion. Howard? Big Z? Magloire? Really? I think they're going to get absolutely raped on the interior, and the lack of depth is going to be a problem at some point.
Miller and Bosh will be injured at some point, and Wade isn't exactly a bastion of health. This isn't some dreamteam that's going on a cakewalk through the NBA in my opinion. They've got two of the best perimeter players in the league, and that will get them very far next year. How far is still very much in question from my view.

Daequan Cook leads the Boys and Girls club in blocked shots:
The final tally is up for debate, but unofficially Daequan Cook registered more blocked shots in one hour Tuesday than he has throughout his three-year NBA career.
As the Thunder shooting guard manned the middle against minuscule campers at the Boys and Girls Club of Oklahoma County, he swatted shot after shot during a layup drill pitting novice pups against NBA player. One lad had his stuff thrown three times on one play.
"I just came back from working out so I was still kind of loose," Cook explained. "They actually were getting a little aggressive on me so I had to step up my game a little bit, too."

On a serious note....not sure what Boston is expecting from Shaq this year. He was terrible in Cleveland last year. Basically a giant tub of lard that sits in the paint, gets the occassional garbage points dunk and a rebound if it comes right to him.
Its kinda sad to watch him now actually.

He's still good at rebounding (which the Celtics really needs) and even at his age, his finishing and ball handling are still much better than Perkins. He's slow but give him 15-20 mins per game should be alright.

He's a shell of his prime but, yeah, part of the reason he was so disappointing last year was that the team needed more from him. As long as he is really satisfied with a more limited role, he should be effective for them.

What awaits for Team USA?
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=sheridan_chris&page=TeamUSA-WBF-100813
Despite missing the guys from the redeem team that won gold in Beijing 2008, it's still a solid team with Lamar Odom and Chauncey Billups leading the way. They also have Kevin Durant, Derek Rose, Stephen Curry and Rajon Rondo who lack height, but make up for it with speed and jump shooting.
Hopefully, the U.S. wins gold in the 2010 FIBA World Championships two weeks from now.

Well, here's the United States roster for the 2010 FIBA World Championship
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=sheridan_chris&page=TeamUSA-2010Roster
Pretty good roster despite not having one member from the Redeem Team that recaptured the gold medal in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
However, the United States haven't won a FIBA World Championship gold since 1994.

Make it 2 for 2 for Team USA.
Kevin Durant leads Team USA to a 99-77 win over Slovenia.
Shot over 50% from the field, knocked down 10 treys, outrebounded them. Gotta limit the fouls, knock down FTs and take care of the basketball.

Would it be possible to have these stats formatted more cleanly? I'm sure I'm not the only one who totally glosses over these posts because they're basically unreadable, but wishes that I could get the information that they were attempting to convey.
