View Full Version : McGwire Sets Another New Record!

Mark McGwire set another major league record yesterday by hitting 20 homeruns faster than anyone in MLB history. He hit 20 in 35 games breaking the previous record held by none other than Mickey Mantle. Mick did it in 41 games.
The amazing thing about Mac's feat is that he was out a whole bunch of games with his back problem. The guy is phenominal.
Also what it tells me is what a terrific athlete Mickey Mantle was. I you think about player conditioning today vs in Mick's day Mickey was a superman among mortals.
Anyway, congrats Mark on another, uh, mark. :smokin:
I would be very surprised if Mac didn't wind up with over 700 HR's.
In the glory years of the Yankee franchise (1949-1965 - olease read "Dynasty, the NYY 1949-1965 by Peter Golenbock), the Yankees made a habit of getting older NL stars for the stretch drive. We got such players as Mize, Hopp, Blackwell, Sain, Slaughter, Konstanty, Kaat, to name just a few.
Wouldn't it be great to get Mark to handle our DH role say in 2002 or so?

...and a payroll of 200 million to go along with it???:O
Nah, by that time at the end of his career, Mac would have all the money he needed and would settle for some reasonable salary just to finish up with the Yanks.

Nome - I mentioned a while back on my other McGwire post he'd look good in pinstripes. He'd be an awesome DH, because he knows the AL so well. penquin remember McGwire offered to go to Anaheim for less money that he eventually got from the Cardinals so I don't think Mac's entirely money motivated.

This is very sad reading this 7+ year old thread. Why did you have to retire so early, Mac? :(

Yes, if the all-time record had to be broken, it should have went to Mac over Bonds. He's the better HR hitter, best ratio ever, and hit over 50 4 times.

Anyone hoping for a Subway Series this season?
Not a shot it happens, I laugh at those who think it will
I thought these things were archived after a year or so and couldn't be posted in?

Thanks for finding those - That one is funny also - but I think I like the 1927 one better. Maybe this forum should have a greatest thread section or something.
