View Full Version : Steroids' shadow is AP Sports Story of the Year
Really? Do these writers realize that "the list" is from '03? If there was a specific steroids story in '09 it was Manny but, of course, A-Rod's name is front and center.
Last week, in light of the Tiger Woods story, I was reading "The top scandals of 2009" and was pleasantly surprised NOT to find A-Rod on the list at all. But this will drag it all up again.

Alex Rodriguez joined the list of cheaters this year, and Manny Ramirez and David "Big Papi" Ortiz are forever tainted now, too.
Five years after Major League Baseball added punishments to its testing program, questions about performance-enhancing drugs still swirl around America's favorite pastime. The sport's ongoing drug problem was chosen as the 2009 Story of the Year by members of The Associated Press, outmuscling even the shocking downfall of Tiger Woods.
In fact, the Woods scandal finished fifth in the top story voting. Jimmie Johnson's unprecedented fourth straight NASCAR championship was second, followed by Roger Federer winning his 15th Grand Slam and Brett Favre ending his (second) retirement to lead the Minnesota Vikings to the division title.
This year's balloting was unusual in that a major story — Woods' accident on Nov. 27 and the salacious revelations that followed — happened after voting had started.
By then, 37 of 161 ballots had been submitted by editors at U.S. newspapers which are members of the AP. The voters were asked to rank the top 10 sports stories of the year, with the first-place story getting 10 points, the second-place story receiving nine points, and so on.
Given the extraordinary nature of the Woods story, the AP added it to the top stories ballot Nov. 30 and gave editors who had voted prior to that the chance to submit a new ballot, which about 10 did.

At least A-Rod 'fessed up earlier this year to using PEDs, whereas Manny mumbled something to the press a few weeks after being caught and Ortiz is still looking for the real killers.

Rodriguez denied steroid use until Selena Roberts uncovered the story. He's no different and no better than Manny and Ortiz.

Still waiting for Manny or Ortiz to admit it. All three are still users but unlike the other two, Alex did admit it. I agree that Alex is "no better" but he did admit it (and more than he was accused). Ortiz is still searching for the real killer so to speak.

Definitely not. I'm not sure it's even in the top ten. Does anyone even care anymore, besides self-righteous mediots?

I think we don't know how much A-Rod actually did, so I'll withhold thinking he is better than anybody. Same goes for Manny and Ortiz. Well, actually, I think they're all better than Clemens. Lying under oath is worse IMO than lying to fans and reporters.
But no way is this the sports story of the year. At first I thought someone had bumped this thread from years ago!

C'mon. A-Rod went on 60 Minutes after Mitchell's report came out to brag about how he never did steroids. If you really think somehow A-Rod is more noble than any of the other cheaters (like Manny and Ortiz) I think you are sorely mistaken.
If you check the link below (in his own words) ... do you still think he's somehow better than anyone 'cause he fessed up (as if you know if he actually fessed up to everything?)
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/12/13/60minutes/main3617425.shtml
IMO we'll never know the extent that everyone cheated. I hope we can somehow move on as a sport. Will it come out that Manny, Ortiz or A-Rod started cheating in HS? I hope not. I think it's possible that they all did, and even if they did I hope it just goes away at this point and the sport moves on.

I didn't say A-Rod was better than Manny or Ortiz. But I'm still waiting for Manny or Ortiz to admit to anything. In fact I think Ortiz looks like a phoney advocating for a year's suspension when A-Rod's usage was revealed and then himself linked to steroids.

Has any active player admitted PED use without having his name leaked from the 2003 list, being named in the Mitchell Report or failing a more recent test? I can't think of any. So given that, A-Rod's admission is way beyond Manny, Ortiz and others who are either stonewalling or plain lying.

And considering the stories Paxton Crawford and Lou Merloni told, I'm waiting for the Sox organization as a whole to fess up. I guess any shot of that was killed when the Honorable George Mitchell headed up the steroid investigation.

Don't forget Kevin Kennedy's story about one of the 2004 Red Sox in the clubhouse giving a live demonstration to a teammate how to shoot a syringe of PEDs into one's rear. There was no follow-up there either. Shocking.

Rodriguez's admission was just the formulaic response suggested by his PR people. If there is one thing we know for certain about Alex Rodriguez, it's that he's consistently dishonest. Whether it's marriage, business or steroids....he's a ruthless liar.
Just because other players have ALSO lied, it doesn't make A-Rod a noble figure in any way.

All I said was that telling at least some of the truth is a lot more than what the liars and stonewallers like Ortiz and Manny have done. "Noble" is your spin.

I'll be at the head of the line to jump to Arod's defense as a ballplayer but as a person, I'm not impressed. He's shown himself to be a cheater and a liar. It doesn't mean he's some kind of horrible, despicable person or that he doesn't also have good qualities but nothing anyone else does changes that about him.
