Okay football (soccer) fans,
It's time for another UEFA European Football Tournament.
It's UEFA Euro 2012 taking place in Poland and Ukraine.
From the opening round draws on February 7, 2010 to the final whistle on July 1, 2012, you can talk smack about it.
It is also the last time that the UEFA European Football Tournament will have sixteen teams competing because in UEFA Euro 2016, the competition will expand to a field of 24.

Qualifying draw details via ESPN Soccernet Live Chat:

Dale Johnson:
Right, a quick overview of how qualification works. Basically, 16 teams will be in Poland and Ukraine - the hosts of course being two of them. There will be nine qualifying groups, made up of the 51 eligible European nations. The group winners qualify automatically, as does the best runner-up. The other eight runners-up have a two-legged play-off - as was the case for the World Cup - to take the last four places.
Sunday February 7, 2010 10:49 Dale Johnson
10:50
Dale Johnson:
There will be six groups of six nations, and three groups of five nations. This of course means there has to be a fair rule to pick out the best runner-up. For the groups with six nations, the results against the team which finishes bottom will be ignored, so all runners-up will be judged on eight matches.
10:51
Dale Johnson:
One small point about the draw, Buried in the rules of the draw procedure is a mandate from UEFA that Russia, in pot one, and Georgia, in pot 5, must be kept apart. UEFA really fear serious trouble if they were to face each other so they have gone against their usual policy with this, they normally ignore political reasoning.

Not the easiest of the Groups but I'd be surprised if England failed to top it at the end of the qualifying games.
I just tuned in this afternoon as that stupid "Sky" reporter got short shrift from both Fabio Capello and John Toshack for attempting to bring the words "John" and "Terry" into the conversation about the European Championships. Well done, chaps.
we got each other again ... oh well, if you want tickets at the millennium, let me know. i should be able to get a few.
not the easiest group? england should be looking to win every game.
nash, what did the sky reporter do?

nah, england v scotland is the derby. wales v england is more like newcastle playing middlesborough. it gets lip service even though everyone knows newcastle's rivals are sunderland.

There are a total of nine groups. Six of these groups have six teams (one each from pots 1 to 6 below); the remaining three groups consist of five teams (one each from pots 1 to 5 below). At the conclusion of qualifying, the team at the top of each group will qualify automatically. The second-placed team with the most points from games versus the first-, third-, fourth- and fifth-placed teams will qualify also. The remaining eight second-placed teams will contest two-legged playoffs for the right to join them.
Qualifying Group Stage Tiebreakers
If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings.
1. Higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question

6. Results of all group matches:
1. Superior goal difference
2. Higher number of goals scored
3. Higher number of goals scored away from home

* 3/4 and 7 September 2010
* 8/9 and 12 October 2010

For the first time, Tuesday evenings replace Wednesday evenings for midweek qualifying fixtures where two matchdays occur in the same week. This is in order to allow players an extra day to return to their clubs for domestic duty the following week. Consequently, teams are permitted to move the earlier weekend match forward to the Friday evening. Where matches are scheduled for a Friday evening, there remains a possibility that the fixture will actually be played on the Saturday.

Well, more misery for Laurent Blanc and France. Les Bleus goes down in defeat to Belarus in Parc des Princes.
Jermaine Defoe had a hat trick for England and Joe Hart was dazzling in their crushing win over Bulgaria, but the much maligned Wembley Stadium pitch claims another victim as Michael Dawson jarred his knee.
The defending UEFA European champions Spain, fresh off their 2010 World Cup winning campaign, pick up another win as Fernando Torres had a brace and David Villa ties Raul's mark for most goals for La Roja Furia.
Portugal has scorers, but need to work on defense as Cyprus burned them for 4 goals in a thrilling draw.

France disappoints again. If Laurent Blanc doesn't get Les Bleus into the European tournament, I bet the FFF will contact Marseille boss Didier Deschamps for that position. This is a team in shambles, even when France reached the 2006 World Cup finals losing to Italy in penalties.
At least Italy had their manager Cesare Prandelli gave them a tongue lashing after being down 1-0 to Estonia and it worked as the Azzurri came back to win 2-1.
The Greek and Mark19 won't like Fernando Manuel Santos's Greece's performance tonight against Georgia. The Pirate Ship needed to open up and they waited until they scored the equalizer to open up their playbook. To be fair, Greece needs time under Santos and they need to bring up more youth players and play them.
So far, so good for Guus Hiddink and Turkey. Turkey trying to prove that their run to a Top 4 finish in Euro 2008 Austria/Switzerland was no fluke.
Watch out for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Good start for England as they win 4-0, but they need to really fix that Wembley pitch again. Michael Dawson is the latest recipient to injure in that pitch.
No surprises from the Netherlands, Germany and Spain.
Good start to the UEFA Euro 2012 Qualifiers.
