I know that in some cities like Detroit, Chicago and Baltimore they have statues of some of their great players, and just wonder if there will ever be a time when the Yanks do the same thing. I can see statues of Babe, Lou, Mickey and Derek and wonder what other greats would have statues outside of the Stadium. What do the rest of you think? Also, I almost forgot Mariano to add to that group. Who knows maybe they can have them located surrounding the outside of the Stadium. How can I forget the Yankee Clipper in that group!

i felt they always shouldve had not just statues but statues that signified great moments in yankees history. if i had to chose 5, id probably go Babe leaning on his bat, Jeter with his hand raised after the walkoff in game 4 of 2001, yogi in larsens arms, lou gehrig at the mic and probably something with mickey

Personally, I would rather not show Babe and Lou at their worst.
In any case, they have room galore inside and out. Heck, they could stick them in the arches of the Great Hall like the Roman Coliseum had.

I can understand that, but dadrumma's proposed statue for Gehrig is, in a way, Lou at his best.

Every stadium has their unique way to honor the great ones. Thats what our monument park is all about.

This sums up how great of a man he was and recognized how lucky he was, more players around the league should follow in his footsteps.

I wonder if it would be how Lou would want to be remembered . . . .

I find it interesting that in Babe Ruth Plaza there is no Babe Ruth. Can we get one of him there where the plantings are? A big twisted swing? Or a called shot? (I know that happened in Chicago but it is a moment that is easily recognized by the general baseball fans)

Monument Park drives me crazy. Even when it was across the street, it was seen from a far. Now it is even worse. You can't even see it from a distance from most parts of the stadium. I think it is one of the most poorly thought of designs in the whole reconstruction. The fact that it is open only a short time before games makes it difficult for many to get there. We are talking about inside, out side in accessable areas for many more to enjoy.

I agree. At least at the old stadium, you could see it on TV.
By the way, I just thought what a way to market statues. The yanks could sell minature ones of all the Yankee greats that would be surrounding the Stadium and a part of the proceeds could go to their major charities.

I agree monument park is cave like, I wish it would be more open like at oys
If they put the statues outside, management would have to figure a way to get people to pay to see them.
Unlike other teams that are desperately clinging to their few glory moments as they try to remain relevant, any Yankee attempt to turn their greats into statues would probably result in there being a virtual terracotta army surrounding the stadium.

statues for Yankee legends, there'd be way too many

I really think that the use of the term Yankee legend is way overused. I definitely would NOT consider all of the players with retired numbers to be "legends". Great players, YES, but statue worthy, I think not.
I think that, Babe, Lou, Joe D, Mickey are truly legends our franchise. They all transcended the sport. That's only 4. Putting something up, every 5-10 years would be nice. It also gives time for Jeter to develop his legend.

I read about three years ago, a rumor of them putting Yogi in Larsen arms, Ruth calling his shot, Lou at the mic and another one where going to be placed outside the stadium.

I like this idea.

In recent years Yankee management has certainly fallen in love with the Larsen perfect game. Maybe because Don and Yogi are still alive . . . .

I'm glad I read the replies first, because this is exactly what I thought. I haven't been to The Stadium yet but we're all aware that there are many great Yankee players, and many great Yankee moments. I'd like to see a bunch of pictures of past and present players, but I'm sure those are all over that place.

Have you hear or read about the 100's of vintage photos scattered thoughout YS?

What would be wrong with honoring all those great yankees who have made this franchise what it is today? If you spaced these statues where you would only do a few at a time over the years, I think it would stimulate interest among the fans and would be a great marketing tool for the club. Just a thought.
