There has been some interest in changing the rules that minor leaguers should ONLY be eligible for the minor league draft. Please vote on the following poll and should we reach a majority of votes (I think it is 12/19 owners) the rule will change or stay the same. I will set the deadline on February 1, 2010 but should there be a clear majority the voting period will commence. I will refrain from voting.

Holy crap, that was fast.

Thanks Pete.

With all due respect, Pete, you should probably wait until preseason to do this. Some of the current members of the league may not be back next season, so it's a bit questionable to let people vote on things on their way out the door. And no matter what anyone tells you, they aren't back until they're paid. We've had quite a few people sure they'd be back who didn't re-up when the time came, some innocently enough, some not so much.

It's your ship to steer as you please of course, but a general thread for rule change suggestions for people to mull over and discuss might be a better way to go until the league is renewed.

Btw, not being able to draft mLers seems somewhat unfeasable to me. We draft in the preseason before 25 man rosters are set. How exactly are we going to distinguish between a minor leaguer and a rookie? They both will have less than 130 AB or 50 IP. They both may be still with the big club at the time of our draft, and being up to date at the time of our draft is going to be anywhere from difficult to a nightmare.

If fools and tools want to draft mLers I say knock yourself out. They are far and away the least likely players to have anything other than sporadic success, they cost you a major leaguer, they cost you a higher keep than they are worth if you hold them all year, and they're likely to ride your bench most of the season. Personally, I wish more of you would draft minor leaguers.

Does Big_E still collect the money?

Is there still a Big_E?

Actually, this has been a growing point of contention since before anyone heard of the greatest player to never play yet.

I disagree with this rule change... as an example, Brett Gardner was the opening day CF for the Yankees this season. Under the new rule, nobody could draft him with the major league draft and instead would have to draft him as a minor leaguer in a separate draft

That person would then have to drop someone they drafted in the original draft to move Gardner up immediately. Look, if you want to take a gamble on a minor leaguer in the ML draft, I say go for it.

I totally agree...it should be the owners choice.

I'm waiting on Pete's decision as to whether we should continue voting on this (as per Patrick's concerns) before I vote. I'm going to vote no whenever the vote is held, though. I think this is too broad. As Flanders said, certain players could be STARTERS for their team despite being in the minors the previous season, and those players should be available. His point about minor leaguers losing tons of value when they're drafted in the Major League draft is also well taken. In addition, I see no excellent way to "police" this rule during the draft. I forsee the potential for quite a bit of "STOP THE DRAFT"ing, and perhaps research needing to be done during the draft while it is stopped to determine if a player is majors eligible, etc.

Also, Pete, I don't see any reason that you should refrain from voting (unless you have no opinion, of course.) There's an obvious reason that commishes don't vote on trades, but you're a member of the league like the rest of us, so you should have just as much say about whether this is made a rule or not. Just my take on that. :)

Perhaps a vote on whether or not we should vote on this?

I agree that I may have jumped the gun and voted on this, since it's way too early. Ideally I would like to get things done in the offseason but the more I think about it Patrick's right, we need to wait until January when people are paid up and the league is renewed. My apologies.

As for this vote, I say close the vote/thread and I will open a general rules discussion thread so we can have an open forum to discuss any complaints/problems/suggestions there may be with the current rules that are set. For the people who requested this to be voted I apologize also but voting this early is not fair to anyone since there may be people who may change their mind about their vote in the next few months. I also apologize for not getting to this issue sooner, I've been extremely busy the past few days and anytime I've wanted to respond something else came up.

My policy on voting is as Commissioner, it doesn't matter if you are a member of the league. You are supposed to be impartial, unbiased and regardless of what I think I support anything the majority of the league may vote on (rules, trades, etc.). Maybe I'm thinking way too much into this position but it's something I truly believe and the only real decisions I will have are on trades that exceed the 8 objections and other administrative work (penalties, etc.).

Lastly, back to this issue. If anyone would like to still pursue this issue please discuss in the General Rules Discussion Thread I will start. Again, I apologize for everything.
