Thanks to another late inning, GW RBI by Melky Cabrera, the Yankees won their 6th consecutive game last night over the Seattle Mariners. Simultaneously, the Orioles were staging a prolific 9-run comeback over the 7th & 8th innings against the Red Sox.

The combination of events puts the Yankees (44-32) to within 2.5 games of the AL East-leading Red Sox (47-30). The Rays (44-35) trail by just 4 games and have the best run differential in MLB (+93; Dodgers 2nd at +83, BOS = +73, NYY = +58).

Tonight’s game features a battle of veteran LH starters as Andy Pettitte (7-3, 4.38) takes on Jarrod Washburn (4-5, 3.22).

On June 19th in Florida, Pettitte put together his best outing since April: 7 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 0 BB, 7 K. He followed that up by reverting to the ineffective form that has characterized his performance for about 2 months now by allowing 7 hits and 3 walks in just 3.2 IP against the Braves last week.

Washburn has been both outstanding and consistent for the Mariners this season. Of his 14 starts, 10 have been at least “quality starts”, and he’s completed at least 6 IP in 12 of the 14 games. Furthermore, his 0.90 GO:AO is his best since his Angel days, and he’s featuring his best WHIP (1.19) since 2002, bolstered by a career-best 2.40 K:BB rate (6.04 K/9, 2.52 BB/9).

Over 89.1 IP this season, Washburn has a very high BAbip of .371.

LH vs. Washburn (99 AB): .162/.198/.263
RH vs. Washburn (238 AB): .273/.330/.412

Alright I got a scoring question that I have nowhere else to put but here, I guess:

NL park, Pettitte is on first base. DJ hits one to dead center that makes the CF dive for it and come up empty-handed. Andy is chugging around the bases with DJ literally on his tail. There is a play at the plate. Andy gets nailed at the plate, but DJ manages to score somehow eluding the tag.

What is DJ credited with? A triple and he scores on a fielder's choice?

I'd think so.

EDIT: I think he'd get a RBI too.

I'm sure Girardi will go with his "we won yesterday, the lineup must have been correct" reasoning but I would go with:

Jeter SS
Damon LF
Teixeira 1B
Rodriguez 3B
Posada DH
Swisher RF
Cano 2B
Cervelli C -- (8 for 20 against LHP)
Cabrera CF

Why not? Someone should? You get a RBI on a fielder's choice and a sac fly.

Yeah, but can someone get an RBI for their OWN run on a fielder's choice?

It's like when there is a double steal. If the out is made at third base, the guy who stole second doesn't get credited with a steal even though he moved up a base, because an out was made on that play. He advanced on a fielder's choice.

Nope.
It is more like a runner on third base and the hitter bounces back to the mound.
They get the runner coming home in a rundown. But somehow he winds up scoring.
It is a FC, no RBI.

The only way you get get an RBI for driving yourself in is on a HR.
If Andy is thrown out ahead of Jeter, then you cannot give Jeter a HR (ITP variety of course) so he gets just a triple. You cannot drive yourself in with a triple.

That line is the clincher for me.

Thanks - I was wondering about this over the weekend.

Gotcha, don't agree with it, but I understand.

Really? It seems obvious to me. He did more bad than good for his team in that spot. It meant there were 2 on and no outs. He absolutely minimized the damage there.

As would I, but there's no way a player should get credited with an RBI for doing something that prevented a big inning for his team.

I just think if you get a run in, you should get an RBI. That "big inning" may not ever happen.

The rules aren't based on run expectency models, for some reason in this case, they are.

Agree 100%. No RBI on DP balls drives me crazy. Can't make the assumption that you're costing your team multiple runs, when you for sure gave them at least one. And what if that run that scored ends up being the GW? Still no credit for an RBI.

I understand that Joba is restricted to a hundred handshake or ten minute limit, which ever comes first, and Hughes is only allowed to participate twenty minutes after the start and twenty minutes before the close. Aceves will be up and down off his stool like a yo-yo.

I agree. I think an RBI groundout (not a double play) should not count as an out in your batting average.

Maybe Hinske gets a start in RF?Hinske doesn't exactly rake lefties either. I'd rather he get his feet wet in NY against a right-hander.

Despite Melky's good stats against lefties this year, I'd give Gardner a try and see if he can work out a walk or slap a single. I've seen trends in the past where some guys just can't hit certain pitchers, and most of the time it continues....and Washburn owns Melky.

Hinske is also an awful third baseman. They're better off using him in his other 3 positions but letting Ransom cover ARod's spot.

Cano getting dropped down is cause for celebration.

Now let's hope that tonight doesn't end up being another one of those games where Washburn increases his trade value like last year. Didn't he shut them down right around the time there was talk that they might trade for him?

Damn, it was too much to ask from the O's to win a series vs. the Sox. Up by 4 in the ninth and ended up losing in extra-innings. Still, we have to win today. Cano batting fifth isn't surprising.
