Just caught the pilot on NBC. Seems like a pretty decent show, which probably means it won't last.

I think it's produced by the same folks so that's probably inevitable. ER pretty much wore out it's welcome for me about seven years ago, but I thought this show was pretty good.

The show reminded me of Crash on Showtime, which is a much better show. Although this one was pretty good and I will watch it again.

enjoyed the pilot, but need to know..
did the cop live or not? the one that got shot?
if so, inevitable outcome - he's mad at the rookie because the rookie tells the truth. by episode 3 or 4 this plot line starts

For some reason I couldn't follow the plot very well. Maybe it was the meds, but it seemed like it was trying a little too hard.
And every time I see Ryan all I can think of is "welcome to the OC, b|tch".

I was going to post something in the other TV thread about this. We watched it last night and were pretty riveted.

I was wondering about that too (and just realized that was C. Thomas Howell). Also, they left the boy who got shot up in the air too.

and also the Ryan OC Dude will always be Ryan the OC Dude to me.

I did hear that but am cynically thinking the doctors may have been bullsh!tting.
Also: I loved the twist of the training cop being gay.

It was not obvious. My bf did not catch it at all.
At the end, he is sitting in a bar where there are no women, bunch of cute guys, and a male bartender in a tank top. Also, the earlier guy from the bushes is there, who was in the back seat of the other vice cops' car after being arrested.

I caught the pilot on Hulu last week (it's still up for those who missed it). I thought it was a good pilot, and could be a decent show. I'm interested to see where it goes from here.

I thought this was quite good again last night.
I wonder what is going to happen to the young girl and her grandma they put in the motel. :( Also I hope that baby will be OK. It was interesting to see the lady cop and social worker negotiate about all of that.
And they keep dropping all of these personal snippets into the show that really make you guess...

I dunno. I didn't think last night's episode held up to the standard established by the pilot. The plot was as herky-jerky as the camera shots were. I guess I'm just not finding the characters to be compelling enough.

I thought the pilot was "ok" but still not sure about this show ... haven't seen last night's episode yet, it's on the DVR for viewing this weekend. I'll let ya know what I think.

if they're trying to pull heart strings with that black detective woman.. they need to try a different direction. the 'omg the world is falling on my head i'm so sad' card was pulled twice in a row now, in two episodes to close them out.. and i'm already sick of her.

I think it has potential as long as NBC gives it a chance to develop an audience.

Did anyone else watch last night?
I thought it was better than last week's episode. I was prepared to NOT like it because it dealt with more Hollywood-famous-people type issues like that athlete, the Tom Sizemore guy, and the OD girl. I like how we are getting more insight to the cops' backgrounds, especially the OC guy.
I also liked the supposedly-gay cop's interaction with the trannies.

i've watched a lot of new shows over the last couple of years, and usually it's much easier to call it than this. Given that, i'd say no, no recommendation for me.

I have it on my DVR so you have given me renewed interest in watching it.
As a Police Officer, some things are good about the show but others are not. One thing it does not capture, the amount of time spent on reports and not every day is action packed.

I got hooked a few weeks after it started. The original commercials they ran during ER were horrible and scared me off. Luckily I came back.
Since Leno will be taking the 10 o'clock slot will they just move this to 9PM if it's picked up?

That is a good question. It is more of a 10 PM show, so how are they going to air it at 9 PM which is considered a time when more children are still viewing? I think that whole idea to put Leno on at 10 PM is a bad one!

I'm sorry guys, but this show wasn't very good. NBC's other shows, Trauma and Mercy also have similar problems - there's just no real draw.
I will give Trauma one more chance because I like the guy who plays the helo medic (he was also in Die Hard 4), but he's the only actor that's really engaging - imo. Southland didn't really have any that pulled me in.

The fact that they cancelled it after 4 (or 6, however many) shows means they are clueless. If they knew it sucked, why give it the green light. If they thought it was good give it a chance.
They do this all the time. They have 5 less hours of prime time to program now and they still can't get their heads out of there asses. They are idiots.

:-werd-: to ya mother.
I blame all of this on Jay Leno FIVE DAYS A WEEK AT 10PM. There is no need for that at all. I can't stand him anyway but, additionally, now I never know when new L&O episodes are on.
Boz, you're a show that wasn't very good! :P ;)

Uh I'm sorry but it was a heckofa lot better than Leno at 10pm.I dont think that's really the argument now. I agree that NBC is bascially hapless at this point. I even pointed out two of their new shows which are probably also going to fail. It's a crying friggin shame that somehow ABC has the funniest new shows coming out. Seriously? ABC? I think NBC is mailing it in.
But they were mailing it in last year when they greenlit this show in the first place, too.
Looking at their lineup for next week i see Heroes as the only show i feel like I dont want to miss. I know folks love the office, but it's not something i watch on tv. I'll get the dvd's eventually. Community is ok so far.. starting to lose some of it's initial power, imo. (ok, Community is probably the funniest new show so far this year)
hey, nice, i just noticed that my company is a sponsor for tonight's ballgame :)
anyway, NBC is failure at this point. Southland, imo, was part of the problem not part of the solution.

I remember the days when they gave a new show at least one full season (and not just a 13 week season at that), maybe two before they pulled the plug on it. Many times the shows improved and became big hits. They don't give a show a chance anymore. I don't even want to get invested in any new show anymore for fear they will meet an early death anyway.

I read that they cancelled the show because it was too dark and grity for them. HAHAHAHAHA. Could you imagine if they had The Shield, The Wire, even NYPD Blue pushed censorship back in 1993 on ABC.

Couldn't agree more. This show was just a poor man's version of The Shield / Crash. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't really compelling either.

To answer my own question, I did a little digging and found this on E!Online's Watch With Kristin
UPDATE, 9:12 a.m.: A rep for TNT just told us: "As with all of our series, TNT will evaluate the performance of Southland before deciding whether to order more episodes."
Let's hope they do!
