View Full Version : Food Options at New Yankee Stadium
The Yankees continue to offer exceptional value on food and merchandise. They are offering a $3 hot dog, a $3 soft drink and a $6 beer. Traditional Stadium fare, such as hot dogs, peanuts, popcorn, sausages and Cracker Jack, remain the same price as last season. New sizes of soda, many including a souvenir cup, are offered at a variety of prices. In addition, a Family Value Line of merchandise has been created with low-priced items, including pennants, Yankees T-shirts, key chains, and more.

This will be for the new stadium correct?
The New York Yankees announced today their new general concessions lineup for the 2009 season. Led by Legends Hospitality, the exclusive provider of concessions, catering and merchandising services at Yankee Stadium, the Yankees are committed to bringing QUALITY, CONVENIENCE, VARIETY and VALUE to fans in the inaugural season of Yankee Stadium.
QUALITY
Beginning this season, the Yankees are implementing a "Fresh-To-Order" system, which will provide fans with the freshest and hottest possible food.
Approximately 70% of the newly constructed concession areas in Yankee Stadium will have cooking capability - almost twice the 40% standard for new ballpark construction and five times the 14% that existed in the original Yankee Stadium. This capability will allow the Yankees to drastically reduce the amount of pre-wrapped food throughout the Stadium.
One of the most unique characteristics of the Stadium, and an example of the Yankees' commitment to serve "Fresh-To-Order," is a window found in the left-field concourse of the Field Level where fans can see butchers from Lobel's of New York preparing prime, dry-aged steaks to be served in various locations in the Stadium. Fresh Lobel's steak sandwiches will be sold on a cart outside this location.
CONVENIENCE
Concessions have been designed with the fan in mind. With 25 permanent concessions stands and 112 portable locations, lines will be shorter and fans can return sooner to their seats to enjoy the game. The point-of-sale ratio for fans has increased by over 50% from the original Stadium. Moreover, no matter where fans are in the Stadium, they will be able to keep in touch with the game. Open concourses throughout the Stadium will allow continuous viewing of the action on the field while at concession stands. Further, hundreds of state-of-the-art high-definition video monitors placed at concession stands and in dining areas will carry the live broadcast of the game. Credit cards (Mastercard, American Express and Visa) will be accepted at all stands and, for the first time, at all carts. Great locations to purchase food and drink include the Food Court on the third-base side of the Field Level, the Main Level Beer Garden and the Bleachers Café in center field.

Fans visiting Yankee Stadium will immediately notice the increased range of options, with something for every taste from traditional favorites to New York's best foods making their Stadium debut, along with new cuisine, healthy alternatives and child-friendly options.

FULL-SERVICE DINING
Stadium attendees and the general public will have the opportunity to enjoy full-service dining at restaurants in Yankee Stadium all year long. The Hard Rock Cafe and NYY Steak will provide upscale alternatives to Stadium concessions and exciting new dining options for the neighborhood with entrances both inside the Stadium and at street level. The Hard Rock Cafe, located at Gate 6 on the corner of 161st Street and River Avenue, will house memorabilia from top artists with an emphasis on New York talent. NYY Steak located above the Hard Rock Cafe, will offer a first-class dining experience with a menu featuring USDA prime dry-aged beef, fresh seafood and an extensive wine list.
NEIGHBORHOOD OUTREACH
The Yankees want to ensure that the local Bronx community and the greater New York metropolitan area are positively affected by as many aspects of the new Stadium project as possible. To that end, the Yankees are proud to have hired approximately 4,000 union workers to staff concessions in the Stadium throughout the season, with approximately 2,500 individuals working on any given game day. Additionally, the Yankees will continue their policy of donating leftover edible food to those in need, this year working with the Rock and Wrap It Up program and the Food Bank of New York, which will work together in picking up food from the Stadium and delivering it to shelters, soup kitchens, senior centers, youth programs and other emergency and community food programs throughout the Bronx.
GREEN INITIATIVES
Concession operations incorporate the eco-friendly initiatives found throughout the facility. The Yankees Sustainability Facility Program ensures the efficiency of all equipment while focusing on energy reduction. Beverage cups in the Stadium are made of biodegradable material instead of petroleum-based plastics, and the Yankees are committed to purchasing paper products that are 100% recyclable. By composting and recycling cardboard, glass, metal, plastics and paper, approximately 40% of the Stadium's trash should be diverted away from landfills, resulting in fewer trash pickups.
GATE OPENINGS
Yankee Stadium concessions will begin serving food when Stadium gates open, approximately three hours prior to the scheduled start times of games. Gates will open at 10:00 a.m. for games with a 1:05 p.m. scheduled start time, at 1:00 p.m. for 4:10 p.m. starts, at 4:00 p.m. for 7:05 p.m. starts, and at 5:00 p.m. for 8:05 p.m. starts.

I am thrilled to see that there are actually some vegetarian options.:D
I keep kosher outside the house (or what I would consider kosher). I eat vegetarian at restaurants so the possibility of eating something other than a hot dog makes me pretty happy. Although the majority of weekends I go to the stadium I bbq in the parking lot.
I am excited to see what other kosher options they have.
I feel Hank Marvin after looking at the food on that list

03-23-09, 01:04 PM
Yeah the change to $6 beers is gonna be a bad thing. I believe the $9.25 beers last season were 16 oz. So I'm guessing the $6 are gonna be 5 oz of PBR.

I believe there will be a separate entrance from the outside but also a way into the stadium from the restaurant. The Hard Rock alone is expensive, I cant even imagine how much it will be inside the stadium. Not too impressed with the food either. Wasn't Hard Rock the big thing between Willis/Stallone/Schwarzenegger back in the day? I'm amazed its still around.

The only complaint besides the food being overpriced is the sense of entitlement the workers have. If a beer costs $9.25 and you give them a 10 they don't give you change back half the time.

That drives me crazy. I had a waitress once give me back $14 when I gave her a $20 and the bill was $5.20. I was actually going to give her a bigger tip (she was probably between 6-7 months pregnant), but when she short-changed me I didn't give her anything extra...
I have to say, I am really excited about the garlic fries. That sounds like something I'll need to try.
The beer vendors are the worst when it comes to expecting a tip and they have probably one of the easiest jobs (I'm talking about the ones who work one of the carts inside).

And if you give back the exact amount I've seen a few venders just stand there and stare at you like you are obligated to give them a tip. When the beers were $4.75 I remember the venders saying they did not have any change if you gave them a $5 bill.

I absolutely agree (although I am excited to at least check out some of the new offerings). If I want to wait 20 minutes for a burger, I'll go to a restaurant.
Also, one thing I'm hoping for is better pretzel vendors. I don't even like them but my wife does and inevitably I stand on line for 2 innings only to find out that the pretzel vendor (who's only job is to sell pretzels and periodically refill them) ran out of pretzels because they never bother to refill their supply until they are completely out of them.
Also, I usually only tip the vendors who are somewhat friendly and move the line at a reasonable pace. I can't stand the ones who act as if my ordering has interrupted their day of leisure and relaxation.

Completely agree about the pretzels, was just discussing that today. I mean wow. They'd act surprised when I get to the front of the line and actually order a pretzel. "They're all cold." You are the pretzel guy!!
It will also be nice to not have the cheeseburgers made with the cheese sauce for the nachos. Not good eats.

LOL. I actually waited one time. The girl seemed pissed that I called her bluff, I think she was planning on never refilling the pretzels. (The game was a blowout so I didn't mind missing a little bit).

I much prefer (diet) Pepsi but this is the New York Yankees -- Yankee Stadium should have Coke, not Pepsi. Pepsi is for Shea/Citi.
I'm most looking forward to Dunkin Donuts coffee. I go to a ballpark to watch a ball game, not wait on line for overpriced, mediocre food served by people who work at a snail's pace and have major attitude problems. I hope they at least serve their green tea. And at a reasonable price. I'm not paying $4 just because I'm in Yankee Stadium. I can go without it for three hours.

Regarding the old staff:
I had a friend at an old job who worked for the OYS concessions when she was in college (early 1990's). She was from the neighborhood (lived on Girard Ave). She said they treated the staff miserably - I imagine that it was the subcontracted company but she also gave me the impression that the Yankees had a hand in the mistreatment as well. She now has her Master's Degree in Social Work from Columbia U. and is just an overall lovely person, so I don't doubt the credibilty of her account of her time working there.
The staff probably took out their gripes on the fans, which was absolutely wrong but we need to understand the source of the problem. With this new beginning hopefully the Yankees will learn from the past and we'll all have a better experience at the stadium.

Wow, I was really excited reading about what they're gonna be serving! Cubans - yum! They sell those in Tampa and they are always sold out by the 6th or 7th inning. Can't wait to try those garlic fries with good a old chicken cheese steak (I hope they have a couple of locations in the NYS because the line for Carl's was horrendous). You won't have to miss the game. There are open concourses and TV screens all over the place. ;)
OK, technically you're right, but I don't want to be in line for 2 full innings for any concession item, big-screen TV or not (could just watch at home then!);)

hbk81 - My main question: what is the beer selling situation? Are a wide variety of beers (like the former Beers of the World stands) available everywhere? Will more beers be available by vendors who walk around the stadium?
(As you can see, my largest concern lies with beer variety & availability!)

GARLIC FRIES!!!!!
Anyone's who's been to a Giants game at AT&T Park knows what I'm talking about.....the garlic fries are amazing. The stadiums out west are the only ones I've ever seen have them.
Excited we'll have them now :)

But those who settle into the 4,000 or so well-upholstered seats of the various club and suite areas, which can cost as much as $2,500, will have access to much more.
A number of restaurants and dining areas will be for their exclusive enjoyment. And the food will be prepared at open cooking stations run, from time to time, by Masaharu Morimoto of “Iron Chef” fame, April Bloomfield (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/b/april_bloomfield/index.html?inline=nyt-per) of the Spotted Pig, chefs from Le Cirque and cooks from Elaine’s (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/e/elaines/index.html?inline=nyt-org) (because Elaine Kaufman is a big Yankees fan).
Some of the chefs will be at the stadium for one evening and others may make multiple appearances. “I’m tickled about it,” Ms. Bloomfield said. “I like baseball and it sounds like fun.”
Those seated in the Delta 360 Club, which has 1,200 seats, will have access to a dining room where chefs from the Food Network will occasionally cook at two open kitchens.
And the price for any premium seat includes unlimited food, a trend that wealthy fans at parks like Dodger Stadium have seen.
I think they've got it backwards....the ones who can afford those seats don't need unlimited food....we poor schmucks who have to take out a loan just to buy a ticket are the ones who need to pig out. So any food reviews after the first couple games at NYS?
I did try the garlic fries, and I thought they were really good even though I am not that into garlic. I was picturing more of a sauce with garlic in it rather than seasoned fries with lots of chopped garlic. Never tried them at another park so I can't compare.
I went exploring around my Sunday plan section 306 and was disappointed that there doesn't seem to be a place to get a footlong hot dob very nearby. Maybe I missed it.

Why wouldn't they be the same grouches as last year? The Yankees are getting a new stadium, I hadn't heard they were getting new stadium employees too. :)
Because Centerplate was doing all the food service before...I think the Yankees are doing it themselves now. So it may actually not be all the same employees.
I was there Friday and found the people at the food stands to be pleasant, but they don't exactly have their acts together yet. I ordered a beer at one of the food stands and the girl had quite obviously never poured a beer before...ever. I think she wasted about $20 worth of beer before someone showed her how to pour it so it wouldn't be all foam.
Also, I tried the garlic fries and they were quite excellent, though I wasn't able to finish them all.

I always thought the chicken fingers were the best I'd ever had - better than most restaurants. By different, do you mean they were better (I hope)?
The food was alright. Chicken sliders were good, but way too expensive. Nathan is an improvement over standard Amarak crap, and Johnny Rockets is something you should all stay away from. I like the quality and variety of hot dogs, and Bazini nuts are good additions even though I'll never touch them due to the calorie amounts.
But beyond that, nothing else is great. Sushi is expensive but good, garlic fries are great, but not too filling, and Carl's is still Carl's. It doesn't have this sense of variety and home style cooking that many other ballparks offer, especially for New York. This is the food capital of the world.....we have the greatest variety of food than in ANY other city. Why, oh why must we be subjected to FAMIGLIA and Johnny ROCKETS! Get some mom and pop stores in here for Christ's sake. PNC has Primanti Brothers, CBP has tons of little Philly restaurants and Philly Sports Pub; can the Yankees get their heads out of their corporate ass. The average fan wants to feel at home, not kicked to the curb.

Before the game, I went to Big Nick's in Manhattan and got a delicious pizza. It filled me up pretty good, and it didn't empty my wallet either. I'm glad, because all I needed at the game was the Carl's Cheesesteak. (Which I waited in line 25 minutes for.) If it was a regular game rather than an exhibition, I would not have waited that long.

With soup or without?
I thought the one that was essentially lo mein was no better than middle of the road fastfood chinese. The noodles were linguine and were saturated with oil. I'm not talking they were covered in oil like Chinese food usually is, I'm saying they had soaked up that oil and were a bit soggy.
I thought the steamed dumplings were good fastfood versions, though. No dumpling sauce was my only issue there.

Do youself a favor and just get the Lobel's steak sandwich ($15). You'll spend roughly the same on a cheessteak and garlic fries.
I've eaten almost everything at the NYS (my wife and I have made that our mission), and that sandwich towers over everything else in terms of both flavor AND expense.

Jeez, they didn't even have these the times that I've gotten it, only horseradish.
It must be that much better with it. Damn it, now my mouth is watering.
And Rhody, the thing that sets the steak sandwich apart is that it's not "good ballpark food," it's a legitimate item that you might order at a good steakhouse somewhere in NYC - so much so that it essentially feels out of place (although that doesn't stop anyone from getting it, as there is a constant line for them). Everything else you'll get at the public vendors at NYS, or any other stadium for that matter, can be very good, but in the end it's just a good version of a fastfood or lower-end food item - Nachos, chessesteaks, burgers, fries, etc. Don't get me wrong, some of it is delicious (the garlic fries, like YP1967 has said), but the Lobel's sandwich is not in the same category, and it's almost unfair to the other items when debating "best food at the NYS."

Main level, all the way around to LF. There's actually a glassed off Lobel's butcher area where a guy is butchering high end meat into the various cuts. About 50 feet away they have the Lobel's cart where they sell the sandwiches (and that's all they sell).

#1 They are a micro (though that is changing) and it is very difficult to have a distribution network not to mention extremely expensive. Why do you think Bud is so damn popular? They are everywhere and very consistent with their product. Bud has refrigerated cars for gods sake.
Fort Collins to NYC is a tremendous trek. And the profit margins would be nil when factoring in the cost of transportation.
One way around this is to farm out your product. Find a brewery in NY (Matts in upsate) and have them brew and distribute. Case in point Sam Adams and Brooklyn brewery that have their recipe duplicated in Utica and shipped out.
#2 Unofficially a reason? The dude hates NYC and makes it a point to not be here. For some reason him or his wife have a bee in their bonnet about NYC. There are 2 main beer suppliers here.
Union and Manhattan beer. To a lesser extent Ski. I can tell you with complete assurance either one of them would fall over themselves to have a contract with Fat Tire and have tried extensively to build a relationship. But no dice.

Sliders and fries- nope. They were cold and two of them were partial hamburgers. Don't know where the rest of it went. Plus it took me 20 minutes
to get them in line. Service was worse than ever.
Nachos - were good.
Beer in the stands - Tried to buy a Bud from a vendor. He says: I can't sell it to you. I look at him like he was crazy and he says you have to get it from the wait service ( I was in field level and must have been between sections).
So 10 minutes later and two dollars more, I had a beer. Forget that.

Jeez, they didn't even have these the times that I've gotten it, only horseradish.
It must be that much better with it. Damn it, now my mouth is watering.
Yeah, it was a really nice touch. I highly recommend anyone who buys this sandwich to seek it out.

Nope it doesn't get shipped here yet. Rodeo bar is a huge Texas theme bar. Roger Clemens would hang out there all the time (not that great of a selling point but you get the idea).
Anyway it is a point of pride for them to have it.

WTF?! That tells you everything you need to know about the caste system at the new stadium.

OK, why aren't the fish tacos getting any respect (as a write-in)? I had them during the Cubs exhibition game when I sat in Delta Suite seats in early April, and I can't stop thinking about them. The one time I sat in Terrace Suites, and tried to purchased some they had run out of those delightful delectables. Why is there no love for those tasty tacos, people? What is WRONG with you?!

I don't think that's an option for peasants. I love a good fish taco.

for any vegetarians out there here are my picks after about 8 games:
1) Garlic Fries - these are really good and for some reason they are only about 380 calories, while the Nathan's fries found elsewhere are over 1,000.
2) Mo's Burritos and Nachos on Field Level (La Esquina) - they have stands elsewhere but they do not have the full selection of veggies, toppings, sauces, etc. as the one found on the 100 Level Section.
3) Mike's Deli Eggplant Parmagiana - really good and extremely filling.
4) Famiglia Pizza - i know this isnt the most exciting food offering at the new stadium, but it's nice to finally have NY style pizza, rather than the rubberized individual pies they previously had.

Terrace suites can be had for peasant prices--1/3 the price for many weekday games. I sit in grandstand, usually, and I have seriously considered giving someone from Terrace Suites a few extra bucks, to bribe them to get me one of those fish tacos....:D

How are the Mo's veggie offerings? The one time I was down there--workout day, they were only giving out meat choices.

I think the veggie sushi is pretty good also.

They are really good - they have make your own burritos - black beans, rice, onions, pepers, pico de gallo, guacamole, shredded lettuce, shredded cheese, queso cheese, etc. not to different than you would find at Chipotle or Qdoba.

Damn! Why didn't I know about them? The first day I asked them if they had any non-meat choices and they said no. Maybe the other stuff wasn't up and running yet. I will definitely check them out.

I don't remember them in precise detail, only as a fabulous whole. However, I would say a kind of Baja fish taco: lightly fried white fish with cabbage and a white sauce tasting of mayo, lime, garlic and what else I cannot recall.
Hopefully, I will sit in Terrace tomorrow, wolf down a couple and if I do, I will give you a more ingredient-driven description.

why is the poll closed, and why do so many people care about cold cut sandwiches. I can get that at home - at a ball game I want hot dogs and cracker jacks. And actually the best item isn't on the poll, garlic fries. This all assumes though that you have disposable income the size of a small country's GDP to spare...

I also had the "privilege" of sampling the fish tacos, they were served with jicama "fries" (julienned strips of jicama wonderfully seasoned) that were also very tasty. Maybe they could do away with the Big Apple stand next year and offer fish tacos to us ordinary folk.

You have to bribe someone who is entering. However, I may sit in Terrace Suites tomorrow. Are you at the game tomorrow, and how badly do you want one?
If you must have one, I will get you one when I get my fish taco. :D

Not yet. I haven't heard from him.
i see on the nyy website they reference that sealed bottled water can be brought in, but there is no mention of food. i typically bring in a sandwich and bag of peanuts, but see no reference to food on the nyy website.
anyone know if food is allowed? i'm heading to the phillies game tomorrow and would like to know in advance if i should plot out a secret mission to sneak in peanuts, or if i can stroll up to the gate with food in hand and a huge smile knowing i am saving $20 and all those greedy bastards are getting from me is the $20 i spent on my ticket.
thanks.

You can bring in any food that you want. Just don't carry it in a paper bag, or they will make you get rid of the bag. Plastic bags are fine, though.

BTR66, just make sure it's a clear plastic bag, or they'll make you throw your bag out and give you a clear one.
The deli on E. 161st St. not only has great, inexpensive food, but they give you (or did last season, tomorrow may be my first visit!) a very large, sturdy plastic bag, that you can recycle for future trips!

I've been bringing in white and black plastic bags and they haven't been making me change. Maybe they finally realized it's a pointless waste of money?
+1 for the Banana Deli on 161st.

I accidentally added hot sauce on my fries instead of ketchup at the food court. There were two red pumps and a yellow one... I thought to myself, "man, this ketchup is watered down!"
Nope, hot sauce. Killed my fries.
