View Full Version : Eight Yankees Listed on WBC Roster
I didn't see this posted elsewhere yet. We knew about Jeter and A-Rod but the full WBC roster has been named and there are other Yankees playing for their countries. Eight are on the 25 man roster:

I'm surprised that Melky, Edwar, and Veras cracked the DR team.
Just saw that they're provisional rosters that are going to be cut down. Still surprised that Melky is one of the 45 players chosen by the DR.
The only player the Yankees should send to this joke of a tournament is Igawa.

"To be really honest, if I play [for Puerto Rico] and I start getting those feelings back again, start getting the urge and feel good physically, it can open a whole world of possibilities for me," Williams told the New York Daily News. "But right now, I'm just speculating on what could happen. It's not going to be until I play in that competition whether I'm going to be able to make those kind of decisions."

The pitching isn't great but it still should do alright. Volquez, E. Santana, Zambrano, Jimenez etc. all have the potential to dominate.
But HanRam, Pujols, A-Rod back to back to back is insane.

What does everyone think about Cano playing? He's probably just a slow starter regardless of when he starts playing games - I just wonder if he'd be better served spending his time in ST, with his team, his coaches, and not with a bunch of all-star strangers.

HanRam, Pujols, ARod, Aramis, Reyes, Cano, Beltre, Tejada, Polanco, and Pena. I guess ARam is gonna beat out Reyes for 2B/SS? I'd hate to be the poor sap who has to construct that lineup/infield
The US has Brad Hawpe in the OF; the lineup itself is kinda lacking, but the rotation is pretty dominant.

I actually think this might help Cano. Get him into meaningful games right away in March where he can maybe get warmed up earlier and get himself more focused...and hopefully be ready to go for April.

Spring Training games mean nothing....WBC games will mean something cuz of the talent level in these games, and the fact that these players will be going all out to win. They will be competitive games like the reg season/playoffs...not "go thru the motion" ST games where the starters dont play much.

I'm not too sure how much Cano is going to play given the talent in the DR infield, even if they don't have many true 2Bs.

I actually like the WBC, but I would never, ever let my pitchers be in it if I were a GM. I would do everything I can to block it. If I signed a pitcher as an FA, I'd put it in the contract. It's ridiculous that Liriano is in it. Volquez should not be in it either - he had an insane innings jump in 2008.

I agree with all of you that the timing of this is awful, but other than that I think this whole tournament is a great idea. I say play it in november when the season is over, that'll give the guys that didn't make the playoffs time to rest up and the guys that were ousted early two-three weeks.
That's the way FIFA runs their World Cup. Basically all the soccer leagues start in the fall and end in the spring (the MLS is the exception that I know of). The World Cup usually starts last spring early summer. UEFA's European Championship is the same way.
Also, the weather will be just as good as when they play it now and then people can still have close to three months of an off season. If the MLB is concerned about ratings, they won't need to fight with the NCAA tournament, and the NFL playoffs don't start till December. I think the plans are for this to eventually happen once every four years anyway, so a short offseason won't be that big of a deal.
Lastly (and I know I'm probably going to catch a lot flack for this), look at the way countries rally around soccer teams durring the World Cup. I understand why we dont' support our soccer team like we probably should. The MLB really wants this to be the world cup of baseball, and I'm kinda ashamed that we can't support the USA like other countries support their baseabll teams. This really means a lot to the people in China, Korea, Japan, The DR, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Venn. Why dosn't it mean as much to us, it's our national passtime?
I have no problem with Posada, or anyone else, wanting to play for his national team. What I have a problem with is the timing (and Arod switching teams). However, dispite that, I'm going to watch and pull for the USA as if I'm pulling for the Yankees.

I dont think teams can block players unless there is a legit reason (injury or rehabbing from past injury). They can "request" but assuming the player is 100%....the player has the right to play if he wants and is chosen by a team.

It's part of their long-term strategy to expand their business similar to the NFL playing games in Europe. I don't agree with their premise, but that's been their explanation from Bud and MLB.
Aceves may just blow his chance of being our No.5 starter in the start of the season.

The guys on MLB network seemed to think that Jeter and A-Rod (mostly they talked about Jeter) are making mistakes playing in the WBC because they need ST to get to know the new guys. Jeter and A-Rod need to know where best to play AJ and CC - they need to get to know how their pitches move, that kind of thing. As Larkin also mentioned, it's important to just get to know the new guys by hanging out and doing things together.......I thought Larkin made good points, though I don't see how this is going to have a HUGE effect on the Yankees. He said huge, but he didn't go wild over it - Harold Reynolds went halfway nuts, lol, saying that Jeter is the face of the franchise, the guy the media goes to.........and that this will have a HUGE, HUGE (I repeat for emphasis because Harold was really certain about this) effect on the Yankees.
Thoughts? How much time is left between the end of the WBC and the end of ST? I'm frankly hoping the US loses early.

I hate the WBC , although I'm glad that other countries are so enthusiastic about the greatest game in the world. I think players should only be concerned with the upcoming major league seaso - that should be their priority. It's mine - it's all I can think of. I won't be watching any of the games - I just couldn't care less about them. I would prefer, if they insist on playing the games, that either minor leaguers participate or it's done after the season. I would imagine most players, though, would prefer to stay home after being without their families for 6 months.

Damn, just look at the USA's pitching staff.
You could go with a five man rotation of Peavy, Kazmir, Lackey, Oswalt, Verlander with Putz, Ryan, and Broxton setting up Nathan to close.
That's easily gotta be the best pitching line-up out there.

I can't believe Kazmir, Peavy and Verlander are going to be in this thing. Kazmir is flat-out injury prone and Peavy missed some time last year with arm-related injuries. Many think Verlander was hiding an arm injury last year and therefore changed his mechanics and it showed in his numbers.

Completely agree here - for major-leaguers, this IS an exhibition.
I'm delighted that Mo, CC, Wang, Burnett, and Joba are not playing. Unless a guy has pitched in the winter leagues, he's going to be out of shape. The biggest thing - a pitcher is a creature of habit, and is accustomed to preparing for the regular season in a particular way. Take him out of that routine, and watch the injury risk go up.
Go back to the 2006 WBC and look at the impact on guys who pitched a lot (Carlos Silva, Ponson, Daniel Cabrera, for example - not that any of them are Cy Young, but...).
Here's a nice summary of what the WBC did to pitching the last time:

I now beleive that the fans and even the most devout ARod bashers are numb from his antics. He no longer is the "lightening rod" for contraversy that he once was. When he chose to switch sides and play for DR I was sure I was going to hear all kinds of slurs and jokes. "His only chance to be a winner" "turning his back on his country" etc.
I don't like the decision for so many reasons. USA baseball needed a boost, especially after 06. Look at their roster vs DR. It is hard to even compare. just to name a couple.
