Some more news from the Bronx via Sam Borden:
The Yankees have signed RHP Jason Johnson (http://www.baseball-reference.com/j/johnsja02.shtml) to a minor-league deal. Joe Girardi said Johnson would compete to be the fifth starter.

That yawn you heard from Houston was Pettitte's reaction to this signing.

I'd rather fill Triple-A with a Horne or even Steven Jackson.

then we're in trouble...he's got a miserable W-L record (56-100) and a lifetime ERA of 4.99!!!
surely we can do better than that, no?

Well, they need someone else to throw batting practice in the Spring. He'll be valueable to see how our defense looks fielding bullets all over the place. Girardi might also want to suspend the practice of jogging around the warning tracks when he's on the mound, Johnson might get someone killed out there.
Cashman has had a great but interesting offseason. Talk about polar opposites... CC, AJ, Tex... and then Mitre, Johnson... I don't get it, but I'm not sure I'm supposed to.

If they don't sign Pettitte, the more competition in ST the merrier. It's a minor league deal, who cares?

He is horrible.
I'd rather have the guy who threw his shoe at George Bush.
He is a poor choice even for spring training filler, if we aren't going to bring Andy back, I hope Cashman brings in some superior veterans to compete for that 5th spot

Jason who?

My first thought was that it was Josh Johnson, and Girardi was slowly trying to steal all of Florida's pitchers.
He will be of no consequence.

yeah, that guy had decent heat with nice location, and a wicked slider if memory serves. throw in a changeup, and he'd be lethal!

I don't really have anything against this move as its a minor league deal, but I just really hope he isn't making very many starts for us. I could definitely see this as our answer to no longer having guys like Rasner and Karstens, but likewise none of us wanted them to start many games either. Simply put hopefully it doesn't come to having to use him much if at all.

Seems like a waste of time. He aint winning a job on the big club and i highly doubt they use a AAA rotation spot on him. More than enough strong candidates to fill out that rotation.

A minor league deal costs almost nothing to us.
It's 99.999 percent sure that he isn't going to do much, but stranger things have happened.

I got his autograph along with Hairston Jr. about 6-7 years ago. Do you think I can get a can of beans for that ball? I'm hungry.

Its not like the yankees have not done this before, at least now they are stockpiling a few backup plans for the situation that Hughes starts the year in the rotation and bombs again or gets hurt. Im not saying they are good options and but these are the kind of pitchers that are good to have at AAA for emergency purposes. Id rather have Pettitte in the rotation over Hughes but it doesnt look like that will happen so the yanks have to be prepared for the worst with 2 guys on IP caps in the roation, something they werent prepared for last year and got burnt for it.

This is the guy the Seibu Lions picked up after they lost Dice-K. Things "didn't work out" for him over there with the Lions. Staying out 'til 6 AM partying didn't help. Here's a direct quote from his blog while in Japan:
Yep, I’ve had my fair share of FUN in Roppongi too. But from one American to another, BEWARE of those bj bars and ‘hostess’s’, my buddies and I got wasted and STD’s and what really pissed us off was that these chicks will say all this ego-boosting bulls*** just so you feel like a king and then the next thing ya know, your out moola and your wang is itchy as hell.
Nice to know we were able to add a bit of class to the organization today...:-whistle-

Jason Johnson Baseball gets the occasional commenter. It’s usually people like his former high school catcher and yoga teacher, who have done a search on his name and send him a note with their email address.
But here is one commenter, who, like Johnson enjoys a spot of Roppongi from time to time. However, this shared experience also comes with a warning to Johnson.

Jason's had a rough road just pitching with diabetes. Before the insulin pump was available, he used to have to check his blood glucose in the clubhouse between every inning on days he pitched. I lost track of him and actually thought he had retired.

I actually want to see him pitch for the Yankees not rot in the minors. So I hope he gets a shot at starting or something for the Yankees. Because after all he's been through with the diabeties I kinda feel bad for him. And it would be nice if he at least had a chance to start at least once.

I feel bad for him too, and I wish him well in future endeavors and all that jazz, but I don't want him near the YS mound in 09...he simply is not major league caliber.
hey, we might need innings in AAA.
he'll put us over the top. WS champs is a certaintity now.
