View Full Version : Are you a night owl?

I know I'm not the only one out there who sleeps better during the day and functions better at night. This is largely due to chronic medical issues; many people who deal with the same illnesses I have are prone to the same sleeping pattern. However, even before I had these medical problems, I was a total "night person". The medical stuff just exacerbated the problem.

Does anyone else out there deal with this? What do you do about it?

Yep. That is why I work overnight.

I've worked nights (2nd/3rd shifts) for 20+ years. Being a night owl doesn't necessarily involve sleeping until 1pm or so. I sometimes wake up at 6am, like now, or other times at 9 or 11. I just happen to not have to be in bed by 2am during the week like some day people.

I've worked 1st, 2nd and 3rd shifts this year (they've switched my schedule around a few times), so it's easy for me to adjust.

Jenn, I don't know if being a night person is a medical condition. Many industries operate around the clock, such as diners, newspapers, toll booths, road repair, etc. I don't need a doctor to fix that so-called condition. So long as I'm feeling healthy, I don't require medical treatment and/or drugs to fix that specific issue.

There have been many unsupervised night security people who've slept through much of their shifts, and many people work 2 jobs, and in some cases, both full-time. Lack of sleep can be an issue, especially with a single parent, pre-school and junior high school kids in the house. Not everyone's situation is the same.

I agree, especially those early morning hours before the day gets all trampled upon and the nutcases wake up and start ruining all of the fun.

I love the morning. The sunrise, the dawn of a new day, the imaginary of a new beginning with all its endless possibilities... all that kind of crappola.

I'm both. I'm dead tired between 2-4pm and I think I'll be in bed by 7, but by 8pm I'm wide awake. Rarely get to bed before 11:30. However, for the past year or so I've lost my ability to sleep in. Even on weekends I'm up by 7:30 and can't fall back asleep.

I was in college. Now that I am working a fulltime job during normal business hours I am crabby if I am not in bed by 1 during the week.

Tonights one of the exceptions.

Nothing ticks me off more. The only two days I can sleep in and I'm up before the dawn, usually by 5:30. Then, during the week, when I have to get up that early, I feel like I could sleep for a friggin' week.

Where exactly did I say that it was? Oh, that's right; I didn't. I said that I've always been a night person, and that with the medical conditions I have, I have become even more of one. I always have liked to stay up late, except when I was a small child, but it's gotten to the point that I sleep better during the day than I do at night. I get treatment for my health problems, not for being a night person.

Oy vey!

I've said frequently that morning people have had things their way forever; it's about time that things were switched up to accommodate the rest of us. It's only fair, and I'm totally serious about that.

I used to be a morning person. For many years, I was up and running by 6am, and in bed between 8:30-900 pm. As I've gotten older, I have started staying up later and later. Now, sometimes I am not in bed until 2 or 3 am, which stinks because I have to be at work by 7. I don't stay up because I like the night, I stay up because I can't go to sleep.

For me it depends on the time of the year; I get very sluggish when there seems to be less daylight. Of course much of that has to do with diet/lack of exercise and stuff like that. :(

Generally, though, I am more of a late-riser. I work 9-6 which is kind of OK but would be good with a later schedule too.

Actually I have, and we did a number of tests, including a sleep study. So far, nothing. I believe it is more stress related than anything else. My job can be very stressful at times.

My job can be very stressful at times.I'm sure it can be. Sleep meds can work wonders for many people, though. Getting so little sleep absolutely cannot help your stress levels either. I'm sure you know how unhealthy it is. I hope you can get some relief soon!

Don'tcha just love those early mornings, say around 3:00AM, where you sit up straight in bed thinking about work? Good times.

Ambien is kick ass.

I go through periods of weeks where I would get little to no sleep with out that little pill.

pop some adderall, drink some rockstar, up for like 36 hours no problem. drinks a couple screwdrivers at the end, sleep like baby, 14 hours no problem.

Edit: i do not condone the above behavior, nor is it incriminatory by any means.

Haha. Funny part is that when I am up, I am NEVER thinking about work. I'm playing music, reading forums on the internet, playing guitar/piano, reading textbooks. Just last month, I didn't fall asleep until 5 am, only to wake up at 6 to go to work, followed immediately by a counseling session in grad school (I was the counselor!). I got home at 9pm and went straight to bed. No insomnia that night!

I worked 2AM-10AM for 8 years and could never sleep well. I often slept 2-3 hours after I got home and 3 hours before I had to go to work. I never felt rested. Now I work 10AM-6PM. I sleep great and always feel alert at work.

Yes and I'm starting to hate it. I usually go to bed b/w 3 and 4 am and wake up about 10 am. I ALWAYS nap for at least 1.5 hours during the day which completely ruins falling asleep early for me. I've tried changing my routine, but I haven't been very successful in doing it.
