...will be playing for his next contract in 2009... We need a quality CF... Anyone interested in a possible trade for Figgins?

Absolutely. I'd offer 2 out of 3 of:
Melky
Nady
Kennedy

Are the Angels looking to move him?

Rather stick with Gardner.

For the right price, any team will move anybody.
He'd only play well in intersquad games.

He's not all that good. We are blinded by his speed and the fact that he kills us every time we play them. I don't see how he fits in with our team.

I don't know, but the Cubbies were inquiring about him at the winter meetings... Link:

Has speed and could also fill in at 3rd. For the right price he'd be interesting.

I'd give anything to have him on our team, but why would the angels move him after missing on Tex. Doesn't make sense

Career OPS+ 96. He'll be 31 in a month. As his speed goes, he'll only get worse.

It's true he had an off year last year, but in 2007 he was a monster (.330, .393 OBP, 41 SBs) and I expect a similar season with his walk year coming up. Not to mention that our leadoff hitter is 35 yrs. old, and we need a CF right now. I would call that "fitting in".

Figgins is not a quality CF. Gardner is already close to him and his declining speed

Figgins plays many more positions than Gardner, and his versatility is a characteristic this team can use. As for his declining speed, his 34 stolen bases in 116 games in '08 is identical to the number of bases he stole in 148 games in '04. He'd be a nice addition to this lineup, imho.

Not sure why the Angels would want to trade him.

Nady for Figgins wouldn't be a bad trade.

the Yankees already have a better version of that in Nick Swisher

the Yankees already have a better version of that in Nick SwisherNot exactly apples to apples, since Figgins is more athletic than Swisher. They are different kinds of players, and I actually like the idea of both of them on the roster.

The fact that Figgins can play 2B and 3B isn't exactly useful to the Yankees unless something terrible happens. What are his defensive numbers like in CF?

 I was gonna say the same thing. Maybe we should get him if we can convince our opponents to always wear pinstripes...

I'd be fine with Figgins in center for a year while Jackson continues to develop.

well said.

Seriously, this guy gets like 4 hits a year that aren't against the Yankees. We like to think of Chone Figgins as some great player because of the way he performs against the Yankees. However, if you watch an Angels game against other opponents, Chone is quite average, or even below average.

113 OPS+ vs NYY in his career. It's 116 vs Boston.
(Still don't want him)

An OPS+ of 96 for a guy that is 155 lbs (i.e. limited power potential) and can steal 40+ bases a year is actually very good. Especially when that guy can play every position except Catcher (and maybe 1B). As for his speed going he is signed short term and at 31 still has a few more years of plus plus speed.

who cares how big he is? an OPS+ of 96 is not good (let alone "very good") no matter how you slice it. hes also god-awful at LF, RF and SS while only being average at 3B, 2B and CF

Yea, he's guaranteed to kill the Yankees, why trade him, especially to the Yankees.

Yes it is. He is a role player. His role is to score runs using his speed and his high OBP. He'll never have that great of an OPS+ because he won't ever have power, but he isn't trying to be a power hitter he's just trying to get on base, so that he can score. He's a good leadoff hitter and would be great in the 9 spot which is where he'd hit for us. He's also a lot better than Brett Gardner who would start in place of them.
As for his defense he won't be needed in LF or RF we already have too many corner OFs. SS he'll likely only spot start at when Jeter is injured. CF would be the main position he'd play.
