Don't know if anyone else has heard this, but from someone w/ties to the Yankees - seems the Yanks are very concerned that the new stadium is well behind schedule and one plan is to use the old stadium at the start of the season - wouldn't that result in a mess for season ticket holders! Of course the new stadium doesn't need to be completely done (the Phillies new park wasn't) but this sounds more serious.

Everything they're saying publically is that the Stadium is above schedule, so I'd be a little surprised if they were lying that much.
Actually, with this ownership group, I really wouldn't be that shocked.

Wow, that would be weirder than Roger Clemens getting his retirement send-off (complete with Hummer) and then un-retiring (sort of).

That would be...interesting, but I don't see it happening.

If something catastrophic, like I don't know, a pipe bomb went off, at the new stadium happened while they were still working on it, I don't think I would mind to much ;)

It's interesting that this thread was started. I been watching the construction too and they do look to have A LOT MORE TO DO before they are complete. There are only 6 months left - it can take at least that long to get certificates of occupancy after construction is complete (in reality it can take up to a year or more if they have to correct violations and I have never heard of a new construction not needing to correct something).

If Ty Pennington can get inspectors and CO's quickly, do you think the city is going to make the Yankees wait 4 weeks for an inspector?

As for Ty, he works on houses, not on 53,000 capacity stadiums. It is entirely possible that the city could send in an inspector and just sign off on incomplete/substandard work (it happens all the time) but in this era of crane collapses and other tragedies I HOPE that the Yankees don't go through the rush route. Safety should come first.

Didnt Randy Levine work for the building dept in NYC at one time. Doesnt anyone think that he may know the right people to move this project forward, he isnt a baseball person he is there to get the new stadium.

the yankees would happily take the violations and continue working. plus, they can pay whoever the hell they want off. i personally dont think its "75%" done as they say, but im just an outsider looking in. Im sure theyll be working on it non-stop and come 4/16 or before that for a couple exhibition games, all will be ready to go.
but i wouldnt mind the season starting in the old house.

IF that were the case, there would be approx 2000 tickets available since the new stadium holds 53K and the current stadium holds 55K

The Empire State Building was built in a little over a year during the Great Depression. If they can't finish Yankee Stadium in 3 years, heads are gonna roll.

From what I hear from some inside sources.. they are having serious issues getting permits, and inspection is going to be tough, basically they had alot of the permits before building and planned on getting the rest almost on completion..there has been some push back on the city as well if you havent read that already..

There's been push back financially, but I highly doubt the city government is going to let red tape hold up the completion of the stadium.

If I were going to place a bet my money would be on it getting down in time.
I'm sure they have a bunch of contingency plans "just in case".

I'm sure that there will be some unfinished parts of the stadium. I remember the new Busch Stadium in St. Louis opened in April but the work wasn't finished until June the year it opened.
I guess you would have to worry about the fact that they will be doing a lot of the finishing touches it seems during the middle of winter and weather could be a factor, but probably not a big enough one to force them to stay in the old stadium.

I don't see any chance of this happening. There's waaaaaaay too much at stake.
I heard the exact same thing too, and not from anyone who is directly affiliated with the Yankees, but from someone who is one of the higher-ups with Turner construction and has a significant amount of authority at the construction site.
That the Yankees executives are lying through their teeth about getting everything done on time should surprise no one.
As much as I'd love to see this happen, not only for Yankee Stadium to be able to host another game, series, or even entire season, I want it to happen even more because of the PR nightmare that these corporate suits whom I hate will have to deal with.
Sadly, as far behind as they are, they've clearly passed a point of no return, and money is no object (not that it ever was, but it's even less so now) and I wouldn't be surprised if they paid the workers overtime to keep the operation going 24 hours day during the winter. Even if there's a lot of snow, it probably won't be enough. They'll be able to work on the indoor areas during bad weather, and it's not going to rain and snow constantly or consistently enough for six months to totally prevent them from working on the outside areas. My bet is on Mullally Park opening on time April 16 with about 85% of the job completed. It will be highly embarrassing to the Yankees front office to open it in that condition, but they'll be too embarrassed to actually consider using the real Yankee Stadium anymore.
The St. Louis construction project was unique because they build over part of the old footprint. They had to prioritize certain aspects of the job to make the new place functional for April and May, because they didn't have another venue to fall back on. Here, they do, but their egos won't allow them to use it.
As for Levine using his connections to rush permits through red tape, yes, that's a major factor. However, the inspections will still have to be done, and everything will have to be up to code. If anything is wrong and somebody gets killed by a falling piece of concrete in the "great hall" because it was only bolted into the ceiling with 12 nuts but code requires 16, the Yankees, and more importantly, the city, will be liable in civil court for wrongful death. The city is not going to take that chance, even if it means the Yankees executives will look bad.

There is no way that they will play another game in Yankee Stadium II (which is what I call the 1976-2008 park). If somehow Yankee Stadium III is not ready in time, they will play somewhere else.
Just my prediction. Fact is, if it is not ready, they will probably just lie and say it is, and just go ahead and play anyway!
Am I too cynical?
Cynicism is just a pessimistic way of telling the truth. I agree with you fully on both counts. Yankee Stadium has seen its last baseball game, at least for 60-70 years or more, and in all probability, there will be a game played on the north side of 161st Street on April 16, 2009.
If the builders were having some delays finishing my new house and I had already moved out of the old one (and sold off some of the furniture), I'd be thinking about renting a furnished place on a month-to-month basis.
No big deal. The Yankees have played at Shea before, and it's available next spring. :)

Well, Shea will be a parking lot by April, and I can't see the Mets agreeing to let them play in CitiField for any amount of time next year. But who knows.

So why didn't they play there while Yankee Stadium was being modernized instead of moving out and destroying Yankee Stadium?

It's an arrangement that probably neither the Yankees nor the Mets wanted.

I think you're right. There's about a 0% chance of the new Stadium NOT hosting the first game of next season, even if the paint is still wet. Some one in the Yankees front office was on the radio with John and Suuuuuuzyn a couple days ago and said that he sometimes gets worried when he thinks about all the work left to be done on the new stadium. However, he said that they'll work longer shifts if necessary and that there's no doubt in his mind about the Stadium being ready. I believe him.

No question, but neither the Yankees nor the Mets wanted the arrangement after the 1973 season either.
It is a valid conclusion, but what is important are the reasons WHY the Yankees didn't want that arrangement.
Imagine if in 2009, a modernized Yankee Stadium hosted the team.

The main stuff will likely be done. At my old job, we moved into a new building downtown and they were still painting the walls on our first day there.
The Prudential Center was still working on it during the Bon Jovi concerts.

They've wanted a brand new building for a very long time. Remember the talk of moving to Jersey?
Anyway, the city has paid for about half of this project so far -- they have let them get away with a lot. No way the Luxury Boxes at Macombs Dam Park isn't in operation on April 16th.

Shea has a date with the wrecking ball 2 weeks after the last game is played there.

Shea after the wrecking ball will be only slightly less attractive than Shea before the wrecking ball. They'll probably get more tough hops in the infield, though.
