Although he successfully pushed for new ballparks for the New York-Penn League affiliates of the Mets and Yankees, Mayor Giuliani didn't hide his allegiance last night.

Giuliani donned a Staten Island Yankees cap as he walked around the Ballpark at St. George before the inaugural "Ferry Series" game between the Baby Bombers and the Brooklyn Cyclones.

"You know I'm a Yankee fan," Giuliani said. "C'mon, don't give me a hard time."

This morning, though, Giuliani doesn't have bragging rights in the city — at least among minor-league affiliates.

The Cyclones posted a 3-1 victory to move a game ahead of the Yankees for first place in the McNamara Division of the New York-Penn League before a sellout crowd of 6,809. Brooklyn extended its winning streak to nine games while snapping Staten Island's own roll at five.

Mets outfielder Tsuyoshi Shinjo, rehabbing a strained left quad, proved a factor in two of three Cyclones runs while going 1-for-4. In the first inning, with runners at first and third and no outs, Shinjo grounded into a double play, but Angel Pagan — who had doubled — scored. In the sixth, after Daniel Garcia's one-out double, Shinjo lined a 1-0 pitch from Staten Island lefthander Chuck Manning to left field for a two-run Cyclones lead.

Brooklyn (17-8) also used a rehabbing pitcher to help capture the first-ever "Ferry Series" game.

Brett Herbison, a Mets second-round pick in 1995 who missed last season after major elbow surgery, allowed only one hit through three shutout innings before deferring to lefthander Michael Cox.

Cox continued to shut down the Yankees, who entered the night with the league's highest average (.262). He kept Staten Island (15-8) scoreless until the sixth, when shortstop Robert McIntyre overthrew catcher Brett Kay on a two-out play at the plate that otherwise would have caught John-Ford Griffin, who attempted to score from second on a ground ball in the infield.

Alarming: Cyclones officials said there was a small fire yesterday at KeySpan Park that started in a laundry room on the lower level. The sprinkler system went off, but only limited damage — not visible to spectators — was reported, according to the spokesman. ... The Mets signed two of their high-round draft picks, who reported to the Cyclones yesterday: pitchers Leonard DiNardo (third round, Stetson) and Brian Walker (fourth, Miami).

Almost all of the Cyclones' season-staring roster has already changed, I heard! Some promotions; some cuts.
