I figured i'd start an AL Cy Young and MVP thread since the season is coming to an end shortly and liked to hear what you guys think. Wouldn't it be awesome if we had the Cy go to Moose and MVP go to A-Rod? I know that is extremely unlikely, but both are definitely in the top 3 imo.

Cy Young will probably go to Cliff Lee and MVP I'm thinking probably Carlos Quentin.

Given Arod has missed 20 games he's still in the top 10 of every offensive category and in the top 5 in HR, OBP, OPS, and SLG, it'll be interesting to see where he ends up. He could easily lead all categories except for RBI in the end.

As for Moose, I think he'd be the number one pick if it weren't for Cliff Lee's season, however, I think if he gets to 20 wins and the Yankees make the playoffs (we know the indians arent), that could help his value out a lot.

Edit: If someone could change the title of the thread to "AL Cy Young and MVP," obviously there isn't going to be more than one MVP.

Hamilton and Lee ... but if we make the playoffs and Moose and A-Rod really put this

team on their backs, they may def get the nod.

Unless Rodriguez goes on a ridiculous tear, I don't see any way he'll win the MVP. He's won three already, including last year, and he'd probably have to surpass last year's numbers to win another. All of his numbers will go down this year - especially the counting stats, which MVP voters love - and the Yankees also aren't going to do as well this year as last. It's not a question of whether he should win it or not, that's always arguable; I just can't imagine that he actually will win it.

A couple of weeks ago I would have said Hamilton. His team won't win anything, but they're going to improve by quite a bit over last year, which can sometimes be good enough. And MVP voters also love a good story line, which Hamilton has in spades. Now I think Quentin's ahead of him, but it depends on how both teams and both players do from here on.

Barring a total collapse, Lee's got to win the Cy Young.

MVP: hamilton
CY Young: Still early but Moose has to be up there, where would the Yanks be without him?

Lee will win the Cy, but Halladay should.

MVP's gonna be between Quentin or Hamilton. Some other guys may sneak into the conversation, but barring a complete collapse it'll be one of those guys.

Cy: Lee
MVP: Hamilton

Hamilton simply can not win the MVP if Quentin keeps up his production and his team makes the playoffs.

He's got a .977 OPS and is on pace for 45 HR and 126 RBI's while batting .292 (Quentin)

Cy Young: Lee (this is almost a lock)
MVP: Hamilton, Quentin, or possibly even Morneau. Depends on what these 3 players do down the stretch and who wins the AL Central. Hamilton has the statistical edge but likely won't see the playoffs plus many people view Kinsler as the MVP of that team.

Lee's got fewer IP, but otherwise has better stats just about any way you look at it. He's the best pitcher in the league this year.

Can we add ROY to the discussion? It's pretty wide open. Longoria has the edge among hitters but he got hurt. Gallaraga could win it with his 11 wins and 3.11 era.

It depends on what he does down the stretch obviously. If the ChiSox make the post season and he keeps up his torrid pace, I'm sure Quentin will be the MVP.

I think Hamilton has a shot to win too.

These awards are won and lost in September but right now Cliff Lee would really have to suck to lose the Cy-young or Halladay would have to pitch TOR to the post season.

As for AL - MVP I'd say it is between Quentin & Youkolis

Cy young is Cliff Lee.
MVP is a little more hazy since its such a subjective award but Quentin would have to be a front runner. K-Rod could be considered for both awards.

Halladay has a lower WHIP, higher K-rate, more IP, averages more IP/GS, more CGs (and SHOs). His ERA (2.64) is higher than Lee's (2.43), but not dramatically so. What Cliff Lee gets is a lot more run support (5.02) to Halladay's (3.83). As a result he has a much better W/L. But are deserving, but looking just at this season, I'd rather have Halladay (largely because he pitches so damn many innings).

If you're not going to give Lee much credit for a lower ERA, you can't give Halladay any more credit for having a 1.042 WHIP compared with Lee's 1.078. That's really minuscule.

I don't count CG for much, SHO only slightly more. Both are contextual, almost as much as wins and losses are. Halladay has a higher K rate, but Lee has fewer walks and a better K:BB ratio. Lee's got a higher BABIP - .303, which means he's got that 2.43 ERA while pitching in bad luck. By BP's reckoning, Lee's support neutral stats are better (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/sortable/index.php?cid=204017), and he's got a better VORP despite the difference in IP.

The main argument for Halladay is the IP. Otherwise, Lee's been a better pitcher this year.

I will be pissed if Pedroia wins the AL MVP, Justin Morneau is having a similar year as in 2006 and beat Jeter who had a FAR superior year than Pedroia is having right now. Morneau should get the nod of Pedroia, he's having a good year, but come on.

i still say hamilton gets it, even though he fell off a cliff after the ASB and the HRD

Despite the injury Quentin should win the MVP. Had he stayed healthy he would've been a shoe-in even if he played like crap down the stretch. With the injury though his stats are still competitive with or better than everyone else in the league. I mean he's still tied for the league lead in HRs. He's 10th in RBI's. 3rd in OPS. And his team will make the playoffs after no one expected them to coming into this year.

Pedroia? He's had a great year, but he's never been the most feared hitter in that lineup. Also statistically you could make a better argument for Youkilis, but that kind of negates the argument you could make for either of them.

Unfortunately I think Pedroia may win it though just because he has the most buzz surrounding him in a year where no one really deserves the award.

AL Cy Young = Cliff Lee #1 in Wins and ERA
MVP = Frank Poncherelo from the White Sox should get it.

CYY will be Lee

MVP will be Pedroia or Mauer if Twins get a playoff spot

If Morneau played on the Sox, IMO, he'd be the MVP. Minnesota just doesn't get the press Boston does and it's a real shame. He deserves it, but I expect them to give it to Pedroia. He's had a great year too, but Morneau is a lot more valuable to the Twins.

I'd be shocked if anybody but Lee gets the Cy Young.

It really hurts me to say this but:

Cliff Lee and Dustin Friggin Pedroia ... hands down.

If Morneau played on the SoxHe probably hasn't even been better than Youkilis. Youkilis hits for more power, gets on-base more, and is a better defender.

I can see Quentin getting it only because Mauer/Morneau will split some votes along with Pedroia/Youkilis.
