So far, his appearances seem to be a tightrope walk. He really has been a bit of a disappointment, no? It almost seems like the Yanks should just give up trying to acquire relievers and just keep developing their own. How many guys have we had in recent years who have been successful in our pen after coming over from other teams?

I hate to be the thread police but it's not like the Marte Performance thread was hard to find tonight: http://forums.nyyfans.com/showthread.php?t=113098

You could see Girardi being unsure of whether to bring Robertson in or let Marte stay out there. Seeing as how Marte was walking batters and had no control, I think I would have gone with Robertson and we might still be playing. If Robertson gave up the winning run, there's not much anyone can say. "Geez, he should have stuck with Marte who had ONLY issued two walks and had the bases loaded?"

Marte will bounce back from this loss.

Robertson? Not so sure. Not quickly, anyway.

What does "Full Pack" even mean in this context?

I agree. It's just my opinion but when they showed Joe's face and subsequent reaction on the replay, I felt that he knew he was rolling the dice. With so many in the bullpen not available, I think he felt that he had to stay with Marte - but knew that he was really taking a chance by doing so. Again, this is just my perception.

Cone and Singleton felt it wouldn't be fair to bring in Robertson. They played the game so I won't second guess them.

From the first pitch that Marte threw, IMO his stuff just didn't look nasty. His control was off. Like many others here, I felt that he was totally spent. As tough a loss, sometimes you just hope that he can get one more out. Every manager has to roll the dice sometimes. I won't crucify Joe for this.

This is the NY Yankees. This isn't your little league team. Every pitch is in the spotlight. It's the yankees. Welcome aboard.

It was at ranger's stadium. Literally- no bsing, the "lets go yankees" chants were louder than any other chant there.

"Pressure" is a stupid reason not to bring him in. Aside from being the yankees- this is a professional sport. It's also a team sport. Sorry, every pitch you throw won't be thrown with a 12 run lead. The situation, it may not even be your fault. There's no crying in baseball.

It's sad that I know the answer:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Stanhouse

Singleton talked about this - Stanhouse was a teammate of his on the Orioles under Earl Weaver. Weaver claimed that Stanhouse's pitching (esp his lack of control) would make him smoke an entire pack of cigs

Marte sure seemed gassed... but as has been mentioned, Joe didn't have a lot of choices. I'm sure Marte will bounce back from this
