I've been looking at different threads the past week or so about different players who are rehabbing with injuries or in the minors, but I wanted one thread where we could talk about these players, monitor their rehab, and talk about how they can help this team get to the postseason. So starting off
Phil Hughes (rib fracture) was slated to throw 2 innings in the GCL to mark his return to the Yankee Rotation. We are all dying to see the Phil Hughes that that threw 95 with a sick curve, instead of the Hughes that was throwng 88 and could not fool hitters with his breaking stuff. Despite everything that has happened thus far, we all know that Hughes will be something special for us, and I have true feelings that he can help us down the road.
Ian Kennedy is somebody who bascially rolled through every level of the minor leagues in about a year. He was spotting pitches and his changeup and curveball were good. There was a reason he was the minor league player of the year. He is starting in AAA and if he can stop us from having to watch Ponson start every 5th day, I'd be very happy.
CMW is slated to have a september return, but with the injury to the foot, the foot being very important to a pitcher's push off and drive of a picth, it will be interesting to see how his sinker looks and how his velocity looks. But if he's right, or close to it, he'll be a person who we can have confidence in to win the game.
Brian Bruney posted a 1.59 ERA before he was injured. He was starting to come into his own as a late inning reliver, at a time when other than Joba, we were unsure about our bullpen. Now, with a bullpen headlined by Veras, Farnsworth, Marte, Edwar, and Mo, Bruney's return only gives us depth and arguably gives us the best bullpen in baseball.
Carl Pavano to help us this season may sound like a pipe dream to many on this board, but his rehab begins soon and if we have a rotation with a healthy Pavano and Kennedy, that is so much better than Rasner and Ponson.
Horne, Kontos, McAllister, Melancon, Cox, Whelan... are people who can help in the latter part of this season, and if a few of them work out, they can bolster our already stellar bullpen.
My only question is when will we see AJax. Could he be on a similar path as let's say, Ellsbury. He's in AA now with a .297 average and I don't understand why people say it's gonna take him 2 years to get to the big leagues. If they promote him to AAA anytim before the season is over, could he be a September callup? Who knows?

Neither does AJax.

but no objects to povano yet?
but no objects to povano yet?
But ESPN told me that Pavano was pitching last night...
kennedy might start soon for the yankees.
hughes and wang will depend on where the tam stands when they get fit.
bruney may be called up if his velocity holds and he can pitch two consecutive days.
Horne, Kontos, McAllister, Melancon, Cox, Whelan probably won'r come up unless we have serious injuries to the pen and bruney is not ready.
jackson? i doubt we'll see him in 2009, let alone 2008.

I'm confident that he'll see MLB time at some point in 2009...

How come, isn't Whelan in AAA, why couldn't he help in the latter part of the penent race?

I think A-Jax should be up now, but I'm probably in the minority on that one.

Whelan is in AA & has been hurt for most of the year. If he pitches well, he could end the year in AAA. I don't see him making an impact this year.
As much as I'd hate to say it, I'd rather hand the ball to Pavano than Ponson. :barf:

No you're not, although I don't think right now. Maybe sometime in September he should be called up like Ellsbury. Did AJax start the year in AA, if so, why can't he get promoted, he's been hitting well.
AJax should not be rushed. Leave him in AA for the rest of the year; no reason to start his options this year; he's good but he's not ready. I believe he's also only 21/22.
McAllister is in Tampa. There is ZERO chance he's with the team.
I'd think Cox and Horne (if healthy) plus Aceves are the only current pitching reinforcements. Matt Carson is the position player I'd have my eye on for a September callup (and Gardner will be back then as well).

september call ups, not before ... i'd be surprised.

kennedy should be back before 2 week of august
hughes late aug/sept
pavano lets not go there
CMW he wont be a big help until late september, but he def will be on the october roster
AJAX will have to go on a tear to be considered a call up, i'd rather he get more experience than come up and a do a BG

You're assuming there'd be someone there to take the ball when you hand it. I'd be shocked if we ever see Pavano on the YS mound again.

Both Hughes and Pavano are pitching tomorrow night in Charleston. I miss them by 2 days as I will be in Charleston on Thursday and was thinking about going to see the Riverdogs.

Isn't it obvious the Yankees are being more conservative bringing Jackson through their system.
He needs to put up some hot numbers at SWB before being considered for The Bronx.
That's how we see it on Long Island, babe.

Of all those names, there is only one who I believe can turn this team from a playoff contender to a World Series champ: Chien-Ming Wang.
If you told me we get none of those other guys in 2008 -- not one -- but we get Wang back on Sept. 1, I'd sign up right now.
I think A-Jax should be up now, but I'm probably in the minority on that one.
He's not ready. We are in a pennant race. It has disaster potential and could set his development back

See I think thats absolutely ridiculous. How fragile could he possibly be? Explain the situation, tell him we aren't expecting him to do great. Is his head really going to explode if he does poorly and we have to send him back down? I just think the whole concept of something like that as being a "disaster" is pretty farfetched.

Hahaha, are you kidding? Yes, thats exactly what I meant, his head will explode
So you heard about a big talent, you like his numbers, its time to bring him up.. Why stop here, when we sign Cole on the 15th lets just call him up. Big talent, he'll totally be a fine 5th starter, lets just do it

Yeah, I just heard about Austin Jackson today and just looked at his numbers for the first time. He's a CFer right?

Awwwwww so when you make a strawman argument and exaggerate like crazy with the "his head will explode" bs and i reciprocate, you can't take it?
Anyway. I'll spell it our for you, when i have time, but it would be a terrible move

Pavano will win a playoff game for us this year. This season has been so crazy that only something like that would round it all off.

I do think that you are exaggerating a bit with the AJax situation. I mean to not bring him up in a pennant race will because it is "disaster potential" is a bit over the edge. If I were a player, I would be thrilled to enter a pennant race and help the team. Plus, if he's not playing, why don't we just use him for a little bit, send him back down in 2009 for a little bit, and then bring him up for good. I mean, he's not a pitcher, we have more flexibility with him being a hitter.

I don't think Melancon can either. Innings limit, no?
I don't see Ajax, more seasoning.

What does that mean, more seasoning? Why can't he be a Sept callup if he's not playing any games in the minors, ready to perhaps enter AAA?

Melancon has innings limits.
As for AJax, see Maybin, Cameron. He's been sitting in AA this year when the Marlins need a CF'er because the Tigers rushed him which lead to an OPS+ of 23 with Detroit. Jackson's current line is worse than Maybin's was when he was called up this year (though Jackson is doing slightly better than Maybin now -- CM has a .818 OPS and AJ as a .826 OPS; Jackson better average, Maybing better SLG).

They aren't comparable. They moved Maybin up from the GCL to A+, to AA (only six games), then to the Majors in 2007.

I think I just threw up in my mouth.Like I said, as much as I'd hate it....
Sidney Ponson's 2.0 WHIP and his high GS/IP (gallons of sweat per inning pitched) make me throw up a lot in my mouth.

Melancon was promoted to AAA.
