View Full Version : Barry Bonds - the poll for or against by age.

There are already enough threads on Barry but this question came up in one of them. I'd rather not get a lot of posts in this thread, they can be done in one of the others just as easily.

This one for example http://forums.nyyfans.com/showthread.php?t=112425&page=13

But just to get a feeling of how the board feels and if age of poster is a factor I thought this might be an intersting poll. If it is inapropriate sorry and a mod can lock it.

Since I made up this age scenario, I like this thread.

I think you'll get more responses if you do a real poll. Try yes or no for ages 30 and under, and yes or no for ages 31 or older. That's 4 choices. If you don't like 30, pick another age.

NO! NO! NO! I'm over 55 and he is everything that is wrong with sports. He is NOT a YANKEE, and I would have a hard time cheering for them for the rest of the year if they sign him. This is from someone who has been a Yankee fan since 1947!!

What were the results that you were expecting to find?

On the one hand I thought that crumudgeons (my age group) might be less apt to want Barry because many of them have fond memories of when athletes were portrayed by the media as good role models (I contend that they are no different now, but they way that they are portrayed has changed).

On the other hand, those of us who are 40+ might be in more of a hurry to see more post season success while we are still around to enjoy it.

Looking forward to the results.

(I was a 47yo Yes)

I'm 40 and in favor of signing him.

At the risk of tainting the results -

My feeling is that older posters are more likely to hold off field and personal issues against Mr. Bonds and be against his signing due to "integrity of the game issues" and that younger posters are more like to ignore the off filed issue with him a weigh the decision more on a purely performance related issue.

I understand that some could be against his signing based soley on age (Barry Bonds that is 44 ain't exactly young) and the fact that they think he will not perform up to the past few years standards but I think that is a minority, that is most of the people who oppose his signing I believe are for reason unrealted to performance.

To way overgeneralize/or just speak for myself and some of my friends: I think in the fantasy baseball/sabrmetric/free agency/roster turnover era, us young'ns feel so disconnected from the players themselves that all we care about are our "teams" (be they real or fantasy or both) succeeding. As opposed to the old days when fans used to feel emotionally vested in the performance of individuals that they rooted for.
To me, I see players/(robots?) and not people, I see statistics and not "guts".

21 and for Bonds. And VORP.

Wow, people who are exactly 40 have 4 different categories to choose from .. should they vote in the 25-40 group or the 40-55 group? :)

Results so far not all that surprising - under 40s 2:1 in favor of signing, over 40s 6:1 against him.

21 and for Bonds. And VORP.I love statistics as much as the next guy; you'll see me breaking down my number-crunching in a lot of my posts. I still think I'm emotionally invested in my team and have my opinions of players and their performance based on what I see rather than their numbers.

Right now, it's 32-28 against. I have to say, I'm greatly relieved to see these poll results. From reading the threads, you would think only 1% of us were against.

I'm for signing him at the league minimum. It's all about seeing the Yanks win. Honestly I could care less about a players habits/personal life; if they're able to leave all of that at the clubhouse entrance, I'm all for it.

If Bonds was asking for a contract "commensurate" with his previous performance (enhanced or not) then not a chance. But at less than $1 million pro-rated, give me a break sign him. If he's in baseball shape and can sit in the DH spot and impose his will on opposing pitchers close to what he has been doing; it's a good sense move for the Yanks.

Just imagine him as a bench player who can pitch hit late in a playoff game; I mean that's like a wet dream if you're a baseball fan.

Oh yeah; BTW 26 y.o.

Why not; it's always interesting in my opinion to analyze the demographics that hold certain opinions. Not that any person should ever draw conclusions and base generalizations on those demographics, but it is interesting.

Unfortunately, this is what happens frequently. Opinions are very quickly formed these days as soon as the newest stat is published somewhere.

Over 40, no to Bonds. He can keep his designer steroids, attitude and break records somewhere else. I'm sick and tired of hearing about him nonstop.
