I didn't hear anything about this until tonight when the commercial aired. It's unveiling is 1/1/09.
I can't wait. I hope Cablevision is a provider.

This was a major bargaining point at the beginning of last season when the MLB extra innings package was only being offered on DirecTV. Sellig wanted cable companies to carry the network on basic packages.
I don't remember who ended up caving in but i remember that being a major issue
edit: This is a thread from before last season discussing the issues

Any idea of how it will run? Similar to NFL Network and NBA TV?
Perhaps basically an all day version of Baseball Tonight?

Here's some information about it from wikipedia:
MLB Network is a television specialty channel, primarily owned by Major League Baseball, set to launch on January 1, 2009 into over 50,000,000 homes in the United States. Comcast, DirecTV, Time Warner and Cox Communications have minority ownership of the new network, with MLB retaining a controlling two-thirds share.
MLB network expects to carry 26 live baseball games in 2009 and Saturday night is the most likely timeslot these games will air in. Other early programming will include portions of the 2009 World Baseball Classic as well as highlights, studio programming, international and development league games, and archival material. Also in the works is a nightly news and highlight show patterned after ESPN's Baseball Tonight.
The network has signed contracts with 36 cable and satellite carriers. In a deal that may be copied by other sports league owned channels, MLB tied carriage of the MLB Network to the ability to carry the popular out of market MLB Extra Innings package. In return, cable and satellite providers were offered a minority share of the new network.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MLB_Network

Every league has a network now. There is just about no need for ESPN anymore.

I'm betting the big reason MLB signed Harold Reynolds was to make him the lead analyst on their BBTN show for the new network.

If it's anything like NFLN, it's going to be a good network.
I have DirecTV and we got NFLN as soon as it launched; I would imagine we will get MLBN with our sports pack as soon as it takes off in 2009, seeing as how DirecTV has a stake in it as well.

I don't think any cable companies are on board yet. MLB insists it be delivered in the basic tier of service while demanding payment more appropriate for a premium tier service. I don't see that being resolved any time soon.
I may never see this MLB channel.

I didn't see last night's commercial. I wish this channel will be ready in time for the hot stove, right after the WS. That's my favorite time of the year.

Those of us with cable will have to listen to your descriptions of what happens on the MLB channel, because we're not likely to get it anytime soon.

I believe cox, comcast and time warner are limited partners in the network so you may be seeing it actually
read post #4 of this thread, granted, it is from wikipedia, but it has a good amount of info.

I have basic Comcast service, so since Comcast is a minority owner, that means that I'll get the network? If it does, I might throw a party.

You'll probably find out in a few months, but it will be available through one package or another because it'd be pretty stupid for them to be part owners and not offer it to their customers at all.

Oh, so that's what that "Opening Day - 1/1/09" banner on the outfield wall was for.
This pretty much makes ESPN obsolete to me outside of actual games they broadcast. I already watched NFL Network for football highlights and NHL Network for hockey.

Yup, goodbye ESPN/BBTN. No need for those knuckleheads such as Phillips.

I've been close to ditching cable for DirecTV for the past 2 years. This should do it.;)
The added plus is that Harold Reynolds is one of the few sports talking heads that likes the Yanks

I hope FIOS carries it, then I would probably ditch Cablevision.
