with Giambi, Abreu, Moose and Pettitte coming off the books, assuming we let all of them go (which probably wont be the case) if they all signed elsewhere, could we recieve 8 compensatory picks ? Is that conceivable?

If they are all class A free agents, then yes.

Its VERY unlikely that we receive compensatory picks for anyone other than Abreu and Farnsworth.
-Moose and Giambi- won't be offered arbitration because both of them would undoubtedly accept it would cost less just to re-sign them to a 1 year deal or in Giambi's case it would probably cost less to pickup his option.
-Pettitte- likely will retire if he doesn't re-sign with the Yankees. I suppose there is an outside chance he could sign with Houston, but I doubt it.
My guess is that Abreu will be a type A, Farnsworth a type B and we'll get a 1st and 2 sandwich picks.

Giambi is a buyout anyway, so unless they can offer him arbitration after paying his buyout?
Moose might accept arbitration, but that's worth the offer anyway if he continues to pitch this way.

There's no doubt the Yankees will offer Moose arbitration. If he accepts, then great, we have him on a 1 year deal at around $11M.

No way Moose accepts arbitration. He could get at least two years from somewhere else. Depending on how Giambi does the rest of the season, same goes for him.

Moose is going to be 40 and won't play anywhere but the North East and seems to like pitching for Yankees. I think he'd definitely accept arbitration, but that wouldn't be such a bad thing so I suppose there is a good chance the team will offer it.
Giambi may get offered a 2 year deal somewhere else, BUT the money he would get from arbitration would actually probably cost the Yankees more than if they were to pickup his 22M option because they'll have to buy him out that option at 5M and then he'll get at least 17M in arbitration. I think someone may offer him a 2 year deal worth as much as 25-30M, but if he can make 17M+ in arbitration on 1 year I can't see him going elsewhere as he seems to really like it here. Also and more importantly I can't see the Yankees offering him arbitration if it'll cost them at least as much as it would to pickup his option.

Isn't Moose from Pennsylvania? I'd give him arbitration thinking that the Phillies would give him a 2 year contract...
Moose has been great this year and he knows he's getting real close to getting a HoF lock...

you can opt out and offer arbitration. It defies logic but you can. It is a loophole that needs to be fixed for the next CBA,,,,,,,,,,,,

no but that is entirely different. If you don't want a guy, and no matter how you phrase it "don't want" is mentioned in the sentence, you should not be entitled to compensation. You chose to make this guy a free agent, therefore you should not be entitled. Just my opinion though.
