Tonight the Yankees (41-35) open a 3-game series in Pittsburgh at the beautiful PNC Park. It will be the Yankees' first trip to the city since the famous 1960 World Series. The Pirates (36-40) have lost 6 of 10, but are 23-16 at home.

Darrell Rasner (4-4, 3.64) makes the start for New York while Pittsburgh counters with 25-year old LH Tom Gorzelanny (5-6, 6.59).

Rasner had a tremendous start to his 2008 season with NYY. His first 6 starts were exceptional: 38.1 IP, 36 H, 3 HR, 1.07 WHIP, 0.85 GO:AO, with a 2.58 ERA, 5.4 K/9, and just 1.2 BB.9 with only 5 walks allowed. However on June 11th in Oakland he was hammered for 9 hits and 6 ER in just 3.2 IP, and in his last start he allowed just 2 ER over 5 IP, but walked an extremely uncharacteristic 5 batters. Rasner has a 2.08 WHIP in his past 2 starts.

Gorzelanny was outstanding for Pittsburgh last season, finishing the season with a 14-10, 3.88 mark with 201.2 IP, a career-high. Gorzelanny threw 148+ in 2004, 135+ in 2005, and 161+ in 2006 before jumping to 200 last year. Perhaps the workland is best revealed in his K/9 & BB/9 rates this year. His walks have more than doubled (3.03 to 6.34), while the strikeouts are significantly reduced (6.02 to 4.94). He's also allowed 12 HR in just 71 IP, a stark contrast from allowing just 18 in those 201 IP in 2007. He has made just 4 QS out of his 14.

LH vs. Gorzelanny (37 AB): .243/.375/.324
RH vs. Gorzelanny (244 AB): .278/.379/.513

I guess the first name that comes to mind is Duncan, but Girardi made this mistake to often early on, going with the percentages and sittting down really good lefty hitters like Damon and Matsui. Id rather just put the best lineup out there, especially if the only real option is Duncan.

Since its inception, the Yanks have the best interleague record; the Pirates the worst. The Pirates pitching is horrible. All of this worries me.

Get Gorzalanny to walk a few and then let's finally get some hits with RISP - get into their pen early and hopefully we can mess them up for the whole series. With Grabow (L), Marte (L) and Capps (R - but good closer, though has struggled some of late) hopefully we can get a lead on their starters or middle relief because their pen sets up fairly nicely against our lefty heavy lineup.

If we need a pinch-hitter against one of their starters or Grabow/Marte, I could strongly consider bringing up Nick Green. He is 26 for 63 against lefties in AAA with an OPS of 1.114

Overall he's been pretty awful this season but he has somehow developed, over a few months, the ability to kill LHP.

The New York Post is wrong half the time, but if true, it's a pleasant surprise. He's put up great numbers this year too and for him it's probably his last shot to show he can be a decent major leaguer. Either way he's a good pinch runner option. Nearly as fast as Gardner.

If they brought up Christian over Gardner just because he's a righty that would be incredibly stupid considering his OPS against lefties is 792 compared to 823 against righties. While Gardner's OPS against lefties is 958.

Uh... I don't feel good about that at all. That just means they're due to have a stretch of games where their starters have a combined 1.50 ERA or something.considering they are 30th in team ERA, I'm thinking no. I love this series. if we don't win at least 2-3 there is no excuse.

I'm cautiously sharing your optimism. We need to dominate the Pirates-they are a team we should consistently drub.

If they brought up Christian over Gardner just because he's a righty that would be incredibly stupid considering his OPS against lefties is 792 compared to 823 against righties. While Gardner's OPS against lefties is 958.

The question to me is why sit Damon & Matsui after a day off? They're both over .300 BA against LHP, and OPS between 8-900.

This team can hit average pitching and Rasner is definitely average or below average. We may score 6 tonight, but so may the Pirates.

Only 11 pitchers left on the roster.

I have to assume that Moeller will be sent down for Ponson or another starter on Thursday.

Apparently Matsui's knee is a little tender and they don't want him in the field. Also, Damon's foot got bruised on Sunday.

I'm throwing caution to the wind. The Yanks will start domianting all competition - starting with the AAAA Pirates.

With Matsui's knee I can understand that, he may get more than a few of the 6 NL park games off. Damon makes no sense at all to me unless he want's Melky's D, the park is pretty spacious in left center if I rememeber right.

It was only a matter of time until the nagging injuries hit Damon.

Rasner doesn't look like a smoke & mirrors pitcher to me. He has great command and some pretty good offspeed stuff.

I agree. And he's not a dramatic flyball pitcher either or have a crazy BABIP. Even with that great start I never saw anything that screamed out, "Stat correction coming!" for example.

That day will come within the next 6 weeks old pal. Beware the Ides of August. His minor league numbers are pretty solid and his MLB WHIP is often below league average with the expection of 2007. His K-rate is lower than I like but he's make up for it with a very low BB rate. I think he'll have the occasional game like in Oakland where he gives up a lot of hits, but I think those will be the exception rather than the rule. I'm liking him more and more.

Gardner hits lefties well

he's a lefty -- the Bucs are starting 3 lefties - that's the real reason.

I am not sure why, but the game in Oakland left a bitter taste in my mouth. His last game, even though he went 5IP with only 2ER was ugly too. I just hope he can maintain a sub 4.50 ERA.

He reminds me a lot of a Paul Byrd type pitcher - not flashy but throws strikes. Oh and I was sitting near a bunch of obnoxious drunk A's fan while Rasner was getting pounded, you don't need to tell me about bad tastes. Like I said there will be games he's hittable. He's by no means an ace and unlikely to every be one but I think he is and can continue to be a competent MLB starter posting league average or better results.

In 80 at-bats this year (and all his home runs have come against lefties, too).

But what do his historical splits look like?

OK, is it just me or has every pitcher who throws a high 80s-low 90s fastball with good command become a Paul Byrd-type pitcher?

Pitchers should be compared to Paul Byrd only if they have a windup reminiscent of Ray Milland's in It Happens Every Spring.
