My guess is that out of the three, Matsui/Damon/Cabrera, only Melky is comfortable playing in RF which led to the only solution being the one we saw during the game.

If you are suggesting that they should have played Damon in rf and Melky in cf, try imagining this - man on first, base hit to right field - every single runner on first would take third on Damon's arm.

Pretty sure Girardi said in the daily news today, that in order to give Abreu a day off,he shifted Melky to right put damon in center and matsui on left. "When you look at this outfield the most spacious part of it is from left center all the way to right field, so we thought we'd put Johnny in center and move Melky over to right.It's a big right field and matsui's played mostly left field.
Johnny's played so much center and i think Melky can adjust fine."
