The Yankees received another outstanding pitching performance from their staff last night. Ian Kennedy had his best outing in allowing just 1 ER over 6 IP. Jose Veras, Kyle Farnsworth, and Mariano Rivera then combined to throw 3 dominant innings, allowing just 1 hit with 3 strikeouts. In fact, of the 36 pitches the trio threw, 26 were strikes (72%).

Robinson Cano had a clutch, 2-out, GW RBI single in the bottom of the 9th and NYY won its second straight, 2-1. At 22-25, the Yankees trail 1st place Boston by 7.5 games as they host the Seattle Mariners (18-30) this weekend.

LH Andy Pettitte (3-5, 4.42) takes on Seattle LH Erik Bedard (2-2, 3.24).
Pettitte has had 2 quality starts in his past 3, which is a good sign for the Yankees. Overall, however, he has allowed at least 4 ER in 3 of his past 5 starts: 0-4, 6.26. He had his best start of the season on April 24th against Baltimore by throwing 7 shutout innings allowing just 4 hits, no walks, and 5 strikeouts.

Bedard has been as consistent as expected since joining the Mariner rotation. Aside from allowing 7 hits and 6 ER over 2 IP against Texas last week (the second time in a week he had faced them), Bedard has been outstanding. Overall, he’s thrown 41.2 IP in 7 starts, allowing just 32 hits and 19 walks (1.22 WHIP), with a 1.11 GO:AO. One area to note is the fact that he’s already allowed 7 HR despite the fact that his BAA of .208 is well below his career average of .247.

Earlier this month, Bedard allowed just 1 ER and 4 hits in 7 IP at Yankee Stadium with 1 walk and 6 strikeouts.

LH vs. Bedard (39 AB): .256/.383/.487
RH vs. Bedard (115 AB): .191/.271/.357

Molina actually got to the majors primarily as a SS. He was known back then as simply 'El Gato' - a reference to his cat-like agility and dexterity in the field. His promising career at that position was cut short by a freak accident involving a...oh nevermind, this is stupid.

I'll be very happy if we can spilt with Bedard & Felix on the mound the next two day then win Sunday with Wang on the mound. But realisticaly the yanks are going to have to start putting some good series back to back if they are going claw there way up in the standings and no better way to do than to kick a team like Seattle when it is down.

I agree that spliting the first two games would be acceptable but given the roll on effect from yesterday and both Andy and Moose looking for bounce back performances I'm hopeful we can take two and then there is no pressure to rush Wang on Sunday.

You're absolutely right--we need to pile up some W's, in games and series, so we can start moving out of the cellar. Playing Seattle right now could be just what the Dr. ordered.

Not going to sit Abreu 2 days in a row....

Need to rotate the lefites off days as we finish up this lefty-pitcher strech.

Probably should sit Damon and/or Giambi tonight... (Matsui has solid #s vs Bedard)

Crazy Lineup Prediction:

RF- Abreu
SS- Jeter
LF- Matsui
3B- ARod
DH- Giambi
1B- Duncan
2B- Cano
C- Molina
CF- Melky

It's Damon's turn to sit out and the lefty/righty combo works best with this lineup. You could move Melky up, but he hasn't been hitting that well lately and is a better fit in the 9-hole.

per abraham I don't like the 2 lefties back-to-back, but since Matsui has good luck against this particular lefty it's not too bad. Girardi has been putting more thought into his lineups this week.

Well it's a start...not to get too happy as Seattle is an 18-31 team....but this is what we should be doing with crappy teams....now let's just keep the momentum so when we play contenders we show the same offensive power.
