From the comments I read so far, I take it the strike zone is microscopic?

More like a diaphragm. It expands and contracts at will.

No.

It's just that the knee high strike is only sometimes called a strike. And Cano's shoes denote the bottom of his zone.

I don't know if I can make this point without being considered combative and get harrassed on this board but...

if Hughes is as good as everyone around here says, shouldn't he breeze through this lineup?

Keep in mind, I'm certainly rooting for him but I guess I don't see the spark that everyone else does.

Justin Verlander was many "experts" CY Young pick. He lost to the Royals last week. Nuff said.

2 walks and a hit batter. He isn't getting hit, he just isn't picthing very well.

Ump is squeezing him though, and this early in his career this is really one of those games where we just can't expect him to be Johan Santana like - ok, ok, bad name to bring up... but you get the point.

Horrible conditions, very tight strike zone, fast and scrappy lineup, classic yankees defensive let down + Young pitcher = bad situation.

I'm happy (and surprised) we're tied.

IMO that's a situation where Jason needs to at least take one shot at hitting a ball through the left side. I wonder what the probability is of him being successful doing that as opposed to hitting vs the shift to right.

Keep in mind, I'm certainly rooting for him but I guess I don't see the spark that everyone else does.

I don't think you're being combative, but any pitcher can beat any offense, no matter how bad the pitcher is and how great the offense is, and, likewise, any pitcher can lose to any offense regardless of how great the pitcher is and how bad the offense is.

In 1999, one of Pedro Martinez' finest seasons, his worst start by far was against the Florida Marlins, a team that lost nearly 100 games that year. He gave up 7 ER (9 R) and 12 hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Hughes clearly isn't anywhere near as good as 1999 Pedro Martinez right now, and likely never will be. To expect him to be a tremendous starter who dominates every time out right now (or at any point) is going to make you very disappointed quite a bit. I think he'll become a good, and probably great, SP, but even the greatest can have terrible outings on any given day.

no it should be, the runner advanced on the error but would have scored on the wlak that loaded the bases, hence the ER. not if you are refering to the SB where Benemit dropped it that's different but since no error was charged, the run is still earned.
