Notes: Yes, that’s Billy Crystal. Blood and guts one day, let the comedian hit leadoff the next. … It’s ex-Yankee Day for the Pirates. They have Jaret Wright, Doug Mientkiewicz, Kevin Thompson and T.J. Beam are on the travel roster.

Man, I thought the Billy C thing was funny until I actually saw his name in the lineup...

Pretty soon here the pitchers and bench player we see in the lineup will start to look like our opening day roster.

Karstens has pitched well but he's only gone 5 IP. (1.80 ERA)

Veras has only thrown 2 IP with an ERA of 9.00

My guess is that Karstens is still in the running for long man but I can't imagine Veras has much of a shot at the 'pen with so few innings so far.

Wow...nice Fernando's reference!

I thought he said it was better to look good than to be feel good. I think he's gonna test that theory today...

Some pitching numbers:

Mussina has pitch 4.2 innings so far. This was in two starts.

His first start was not strong (he had a good 1.2 IP then tired and lost velocity and command and got hit hard) but he bounced back well for his 2nd outing.

9.68 ERA 5 K's 2 BB's 5 ER 0HR

Rivera has pitched 2 perfect innings with 3 K's.

Karstens has pitched 5 innings and given up 1 run. 3K's 1BB 5H

Veras has pitched 2 innings and given up 2 runs (9.00 ERA) on 2 H 0K 0BB

Never mind. I just looked it up and it appears that I was remembering wrong. I think the Brooks thing and the Crystal things were different, though. Crystal certainly isn't going to play multiple games, and Brooks' participation was to promote his charity.

Moose seems to be getting pitches over for strikes early and getting ahead but they are making a lot of contact. Are they hard hits or what?

No. Everything was basically a popout until now, the last fly ball this inning was kind of a slap/inside out fly the other way. Moose's command looks very sharp, and his curveball is good again. His fastball is definitely hittable unless he places it exactly where he wants

Its kind of interesting. 52 pitches is great for 4 innings in any game, but its actually a lot for 4 perfect innings (omg no jinxezz) with 1 strikeout. That means a lot of deep counts and then an out in play. Like the Pirates aren't swinging at all early in the count and then are swinging for contact with 2 strikes

I think the gun was a little juiced the last game. I saw one reporter mention in a piece that Moose was at 83-86 during that game

Grounded to first, Shelley looks him back then goes to first, the runner takes off, and after stepping on first, Shelley throws home, catching the runner in a run down. justinvarnes

Shelley picks up the grounder, then looks the runner back to 3rd.

He then races the runner to 1st and beats him for the 2nd out.

As he does that, they send the runner from 3rd and Shelley fires a strike to Molina. The runner heads back to 3rd as Molina throws to A-Rod.

A-Rod runs the runner down for the last out.

Nice exchange involving two backups!

He had 5 IP before today, so it was not enogh to build a strong case, but he gave up 5 hits in those 5 innings. Seems like no one wants it...

I wish they could just have 7 really good short relievers, but with the inning limits and the Mussina's stamina in question, I do think they need an innings eater in the 'pen.
