So we are at baseball's final weekend for the regular season. Not one team has clinched a playoff spot. 7 teams are still in play for 4 spots. One team has almost fully collapsed. One team would have collapsed if the other team was intelligent. And another team has suddenly won 11 games in a row.
A possible 5 way tie after Sunday? Huh? What is all this? I cannot figure it out the NL nor handicap this finish.
At this rate, the playoffs might be delayed by a week. Damn you NL.
Can someone make sense of this madness?

While all the attention has been focused (understandably) on the Mets meltdown, the team that is really getting a free ride is the Brewers. The Cubs are doing everything possible to let them back in to the race, and they can't take advantage.

The Cubs are backing in. They're begging to be caught but the Brewers are incompetently managed and can't get anything going. The team from the land of Laverne and Shirley is done.
A sweep by the Rockies this weekend would almost certainly get them in, as they play Arizona and trail those same Snakes by 2 with 3 to go. The Padres are in the middle of them, but they play the Brewers...who can't seem to win as I just said.
The WC will come out of the West. One of those 2 teams in the East will be roadkill for the WC (probably the Mets) and the other simply wins the division. I personally think there could be a 1-game playoff.
The real bulk of the problem, therefore, comes from the NL West. 3 teams playing for 2 spots, and all very well could tie.
Hell, there's a scenario right now where the Rockies could be the #1 seed in the league. It's not going to be the Cubs, that much we know...BUT the Cubs will probably be the first to clinch.

Mike, one of the dumbest decisions I've ever seen came on Wednesday night in Milwaukee. Down 3-2 in the 8th, the Brewers decided to "man up" and hit Pujols on purpose as "retaliation" for Prince Fielder being hit. Mind you, Pujols was "thrown at" the night before. That led to a 4 run inning, which included walks to Miggy Cairo and Kelly Stinnett.....KELLY F'N STINNETT (.176) with the bags juiced.
Dumb. Dumb. I cant understand it.

Ding! Ding! Ding!
If you (Yost) are going to carry a grudge, there's a time and a place for retaliation, not when you're battling for a playoff spot with a couple games left against a team trying to give you the division. Not saying the Brew Crew would've pulled out a win against the Cards that night but it opened the floodgates for the Birds.
Can't the Central just forfeit their automatic playoff spot and give it to the next best team?

Okay, here's a good scenario. The Cubs face the Yankees in the World Series, and A-Rod points to a spot in the center field bleachers to the crowd, and then hits a home run to that very spot.

It would be like trying to make sense of a Picasso.
This is great for baseball. Sure not one of the teams in contention would be favorites in a series against any of the four AL Playoff teams, but it's a very wild finish. When you consider that by the All-Star Break, both the Mets and the Brewers were virtual locks for their respective divisions, this thing is great.
What makes it even better is I have no emotional investment in one team over the others.

I gotta give props to Colorado -- they're on the brink of being eliminated from the postseason, but they're finishing up their best regular season in franchise history.
Meanwhile, if Milwaukee loses their last 2 games, not only will they miss the playoffs for their 24th straight year (obviously 1994 not included in the count), but will not finish with a winning record for the 15th straight year (including '94).

I live in the Philly area, and I've never seen this market (which is an incredibly negative and vituperous sports atmosphere at nearly all times) so excited. People are overjoyed at the Phillies success.
It's really neat to watch, kind of like 1995 in the City.

I'm not sure, because then the loser of the NYM/PHI game would be 0.5 games behind SD. :dunno:

I believe you are right, because the playoff game is still considered regular season. That's why you see the Yanks were 100-63 in 1978, even though it was a "162 game season"
I think the loser of Monday's game is out and the winner - no wait....I can't figure this out.

Ok, despite the 0.5 game lead thing, this is how it works according to mlb.com:
If there's a three-way tie among the Padres, Mets and Phillies: The Mets and Phillies would play in Philly on Monday to crown the East champ. Monday's losing team would play Tuesday to decide the Wild Card. The Padres would either host the Phils or travel to New York.

It can be said that their Wild Card year of 1995 was better, if they miss the playoffs this year.Even so, I think they're better overall this year, though the result could be different. Better win percentage, better offense, and a likely NL MVP on their team (though Dante Bichette was #2 in 1995).

I'm pretty happy for the Rockies, the Yankees are obviously my number 1 as I was a fan of them before the Rockies existed, but it's pretty cool to have a decent hometown team that's playing meaningful baseball in September. With the Broncos winning a couple Super Bowls, the Nuggets getting good and even the Avs, the Rockies have kind of been the red headed stepchild of CO sports. I'm happy to see them putting a good team together and hope they can keep it together, for at least a few more years. They've got a good young core.

I've always felt that the wild card spot given enough of a disadvantage for the playoffs (though I certainly feel less bad about it THIS year...).
One of the solutions that's always appealed to me is to have two wild card teams that face off in a one game playoff; I suppose we'll have a taste of this idea this year in the National League.
