I guess if the 2nd baseman gets 3 ground balls in a row, but the first baseman bobbles one of them and the runner is safe, the 2nd baseman would still get an assist on the play. So theoretically he could get a 4th assist on the next batter?

if there was an error, how did he get an assist if there was no put out? If i'm not mistaken an assist is a throw that leads to an immediate put out. I guess if the first baseman drops the ball as stated, it would be a put out so technically a person can have an infinite amount of putouts :)

This is from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assist_(baseball)) ...

In baseball, an assist (denoted by A) is a defensive statistic, baseball being the rare sport in which the defensive team controls the ball. An assist is awarded to every defensive player who fields or touches the ball (after it has been hit by the batter) prior to the recording of a putout, even if the contact was unintentional. For example, if a ball strikes a player's leg and bounces off him to another fielder, who tags the baserunner, the first player is credited with an assist. A fielder can receive a maximum of one assist per out recorded. An assist is also awarded if a putout would have occurred, had not another fielder committed an error. An example of such a situation would be when the shortstop fields the ball cleanly, but the first baseman drops his throw. In this case, the first baseman would get an error but the shortstop would still get an assist.

And this is from the official rules, on MLB.com (http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/official_rules/official_scorer_10.jsp) ...

10.10 Assists
An assist is a statistic credited to a fielder whose action contributes to a batter-runner or runner being put out, as set forth in this Rule 10.10.
(a) The official scorer shall credit an assist to each fielder who
(1) throws or deflects a batted or thrown ball in such a way that a putout results, or would have resulted except for a subsequent error by any fielder. Only one assist and no more shall be credited to each fielder who throws or deflects the ball in a run-down play that results in a putout, or would have resulted in a putout, except for a subsequent error; or
Rule 10.10(a)(1) Comment: Mere ineffective contact with the ball shall not be considered an assist. “Deflect” shall mean to slow down or change the direction of the ball and thereby effectively assist in putting out a batter or runner. If a putout results from an appeal play within the natural course of play, the official scorer shall give assists to each fielder, except the fielder making the putout, whose action led to the putout. If a putout results from an appeal play initiated by the pitcher throwing to a fielder after the previous play has ended, the official scorer shall credit the pitcher, and only the pitcher, with an assist.
(2) throws or deflects the ball during a play that results in a runner being called out for interference or for running out of line.
(b) The official scorer shall not credit an assist to
(1) the pitcher on a strikeout, unless the pitcher fields an uncaught third strike and makes a throw that results in a putout;
(2) the pitcher when, as the result of a legal pitch received by the catcher, a runner is put out, as when the catcher picks a runner off base, throws out a runner trying to steal or tags a runner trying to score; or
(3) a fielder whose wild throw permits a runner to advance, even though the runner subsequently is put out as a result of continuous play. A play that follows a misplay (whether or not the misplay is an error) is a new play, and the fielder making any misplay shall not be credited with an assist unless such fielder takes part in the new play.

So the answer is, yes, a fielder can be credited with an assist even if no out is recorded (because of another fielder's error), but no, a fielder cannot be credited with more than one assist per play (as in a rundown play).

So you would think there must have been times when a single fielder had more than three assists in one inning.

do you really think jeter needs to work on his throwing? you're kidding me. It's nothing he needs to work on. He's made three throws a foot off the bag. At this level he doesn't need to "work on" his throwing. Especially considering he's probably made 20 throws that weren't like that.

The "convicted" part of Martin's comment referred to Steinbrenner's connection to U.S. President (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._President) Richard Nixon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Nixon): he was indicted on 14 criminal counts on April 5 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_5), 1974 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1974), then pled guilty to making illegal contributions to Nixon's re-election campaign and obstruction of justice on August 23 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_23). Steinbrenner was personally fined $15,000, while his firm was assessed $20,000 for the offense. On November 27 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/November_27), Commissioner Bowie Kuhn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowie_Kuhn) suspended him for two years, but later reduced that amount to nine months, with Steinbrenner returning to the Yankees in 1976 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1976). U.S. President (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._President) Ronald Reagan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronald_Reagan) pardoned Steinbrenner on January 19 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_19), 1989 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1989), in one of the final acts of his presidency. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Steinbrenner#Campaign_contributions_to_Nixon_and_Pardon
