To be fair to Jeter, after a pitcher walks someone, there's a pretty good chance he'll be trying to throw a first pitch strike to the next batter, so he sees some pretty good pitches in that situation. And he's probably right to swing if he thinks it's a pitch he can hit. It is just so frustrating when (as in this case) he not only doesn't get a hit but he makes an out and erases the base on balls at the same time!

But all the evidence points to exactly the opposite of what you're saying.

Jeter is maybe the best in baseball at situational hitting. How many times does he hit the ball to RF in perfect fashion to move a runner from first to third?

How many times does he seem to do whatever the team needs to win, whether it be a bunt, a stolen base, the hit and run, or the HR?

Finally, just look at his overall baseball instincts such as the backhanded flip to nail Jeremy Giambi at the plate.

Jeter is one of the smartest players in baseball. Just b/c he hit into a DP while the Yankees are on a 3 game losing streak doesn't mean he has a low baseball IQ. Jeter has always been a free swinger and it has worked out great for him and the team. Every once in awhile, it won't won't out like in the 1st inning.

It's b/c his hitting abilities allow him to do so?

Come on! It's because he's smart enough to go with the pitch, to take it the opposite way instead of trying to pull the pitch like so many others with lesser IQ's do.

Like TZ said, in most cases the pitcher will often try to throw a first pitch strike to the next batter after walking the previous guy. Jeter was well aware of this since he IS one of the smartest players in baseball.

Honestly, I think you kind of have it in for Jeter since you like Arod better. When people get frustrated when the team is playing poorly, these kind of things come out.

I'll admit that Jeter is my favorite player, but to say that he has the lowest baseball IQ on the team outside of Cano is definately not smart at all.
