The Somerset Patriots of the Atlantic Independant league announced yesterday that they signed Petey Jr. as a reserve IF/OF.

I thought he was totally out of baseball. Anyway maybe I'll see him play tonight.

He has been around forever. He was drafted by the O's in 1989 or 1990, and played in the inagural season ofthe Frederick Keys (my local minor league team) in 1990. Andy, if you speak to him ask him about their first game. The Keys were no hit in their first ever game.

He was warming the bench in the AA Eastern League earlier this year. I guess he might be somewhat of a draw in the Atlantic League, but he's not much of a player and never has been.

Kinda strange this came up, he was featured on CBS 48-hours "Celebs' Kids Legacy" tonight.
He's been in the minors for 13 years, his only appearance in the majors was with the Reds in the fall of 1997-(?) Seems very determined not to give up his dream.

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Pete Rose Jr. is back in the Cincinnati Reds' farm system, agreeing to a contract Friday to play for Double-A Chattanooga.

Rose Jr. signed a contract with the New Jersey-based Somerset Patriots of the Independent Atlantic League on Wednesday, then got a chance to return to the team that his father led to prominence in the 1970s.

Rose Jr. also played briefly in the majors with the Reds. He has a career .258 average, with 1,089 hits and 580 RBIs in 1,188 minor league games.

Pete Rose Sr. is baseball's career hits leader.

Yes, the Patriots manager, Sparky Lyle had Petey, Jr penciled in to start at first in last nights game,. Petey didn't show and the Patriots learned Jr signed on with a AA affiliate of the Reds, AFTER signing with the Patriots.

Incidentally after falling behing 8-1 the Pats came back in a thrilling 11-10 victory. Great game. That and Clemens pitching (I had the radio glued to my ear) made my day.
